I mean, I'm glad to see Bumper in there given the weirdness behind his only other official toy, so he and Horribul are probably the only ones worth grabbing here. I never watched Animated and always thought the designs were utter dogshit, so I have no reason to want Nemesis; I also never saw a point in wanting a white Ultra Magnus, since we never saw the 'inner robot' in the movie or cartoon even though it was a thing with his OG toy.
Still, 2/4 isn't too bad, I guess.

Some stories of Ultra Magnus tend to have him originally be a white Optimus recolor. Of course, it's because his old toy was a Diaclone CAR Robot Powered Convoy, which is a Battle Convoy with a trailer that turns into exclusive power armor. Not all the time Ultra Magnus had a name change when he started as a white Optimus after all.

Also, has anyone got their Base of the Primes yet (and I mean Star Convoy)? Some few people already have him and love him for being extremely solid, and the only issue is the hollow legs, which is ultimately a non-issue.

For the same reason some characters that ever appeared in the show get new toys, because they were a thing in the G1 toyline. They're part of the history of the franchise too. As someone who has owned a G1 Magnus reissue for 20 years I get the appeal of the white Optimus in the same way I appreciate Magnus toys that don't need the inner robot to transform. Variety is good and if you're not interested you can just pass and don't buy it, I don't see the problem.

I think I'd be fine with the frames if it were for how they do the legs on them. Shoving the figures on the backside just makes them feel so unnecessary. FansProject's ancient Menasor basically did the same thing, but put the cars in the front, and I wish that's how these frames worked.

Same- the white Optimus and armor up concept is so cool to me, I get not needing it, but I will never get people who feel like it NEEDS to be erased to be accurate. It's not like the fake parts common in animation accuracy figures are accurate.
The Magnus design is even meant to echo Optimus', since it's just a lot of the same features but grander.

Okay so I really shouldn't be saying this because the design department is pretty closely knit nowadays but I've been working on the periphery of their team in a supporting role for the last 3 years or so and did packaging for some other C level IP in the years prior. I transferred over once there was a vacancy in branding experts (typeface, store displays, retailer brochures) But the old guy has come back and they've worked pretty hard to get me to leave now that I'm redundant. Essentially for the year my work on the transformers brand has primarily been based on " maintaining synergy" so making different lines look like they're all belong together instead of separates series. This will be important as Hasbro expects competing robot lines from publishers like Agabyss and Bandai to be prevalent in 2026, so showing that Transformers are "authentic" will be their strategy going forward. Fortunately within this time period i got to see a lot of early mockups and design concepts put into place so that we could make our designs to fit thematically (See; Kingdom box design based on the war painting with the alligator). Its very rare that I get to see CADs as production and retailer soliciting is already underway by that point. For Wreckgar, he is placed as a level 3C character due to his association with the first Transformers movie and late G1. Higher levels are granted to more important or culturally relevant characters, Bumblebee will always be 1A. As for the 2D rough draft that I was able to see it was just the animated Voyager downscaled to deluxe but hollow and shit hope this helps ;]

I never said it needed to be erased - but without the armor that was basically the face of the character for decades, he's not really worth going out of the way to buy on his own. I own Siege Ultra Magnus (Spoiler Pack version), and I love him - but since I always have him in either vehicle or armored-up mode, his inner bit is never seen. I've never felt the urge to strip him of all of his cool accessories and armor just for the sake of posing him as "Naked Magnus", and I certainly don't see the point in going out of my way to buy a stripped-down version of him that doesn't include any of the fun things that are probably his most defining features.
That's not saying I'm not getting that pack - I want Horribul and Bumper - but I can't wrap my head around people who want the pack just for the Magnus with intentionally missing accessories.

AFAIK importing/reissuing completed toys is far cheaper than designing and manufacturing then In-house. Even if Cardbot ended tomorrow they'll have at least 3 years worth of toys they could work off of then hop onto Miniforce or similar. Pretty sure Sentai was doing pretty well with this strategy before they got Bandai US involved.

A bunch of autistic nerds paying hundreds of dollars for toys is hardly a good metric to judge a toy's quality. If the company is spending money to get their product out then that's good, however just because they spent a couple millions doesn't mean they have guaranteed success. It wouldn't be the first time an imported IP flops in the west. We will have to wait and see how this develops.

I always assumed that was the original plan - Optimus and Megatron kill each other, then come back in powered-up forms as Ultra Magnus and Galvatron respectively, with the movie only half-committing by making Megs and Galvy exactly that but having UM be a totally separate guy that comes out of nowhere.

The only reason Prime died was because the makers of G.I. Joe the Movie were planning to kill Duke, and Hasbro got jazzed by the idea.
Then G.I. Joe the Movie fell behind schedule and was released later instead of first. The backlash to Prime dying caused Hasbro to change their minds and so Duke only went into a coma.

I started with Beast Wars and only saw G1/The Movie years after the fact; I have no idea what order things were released in or what else was going on at the time. All I know is that the Ultra Magnus toy was originally a Diaclone robot that was intended to be an upgraded version of the original Convoy toy, that Prime and Megatron both died in the movie with Megatron reviving into an upgraded form, and that Ultra Magnus as a character didn't exist until the movie first introduced him. Without any context concerning the GI Joe movie (that I never watched) and literally not existing at the time the movie came out, the notion of UM being originally pitched as an upgraded Optimus as an answer to Galvatron only for the movie to change things made sense to me.

The trailer doesn't need to be a fully articulated robot by itself. Parts count and complexity would be way higher. Not only that, but have you seen how big leaders are nowadays? I was curious so I weighed Megatronus (a pretty big chonker) and he's 300 grams. The Armada trailer by itself is 440. No way in hell a leader toy is going to be able to make a triplechanging robot shuttle that also works as articulated huge pants.

I know you don't want to pay commander prices, I don't want it either, but in this day and age it's obvious Armada Jetfire needs to be one.

Legacy Armada Prime's trailer turns into legs plus the combiner's entire back. Armada Jetfire has to be a functional, articulated robot, a space shuttle, and both the legs and back of the combiner. Yeah, it'll take magical commander-level engineering to make that work, and I bet the space shuttle mode will still suffer for it.

My theory is that Hasbro are going to retcon Nexus t o be an Armorizer instead of a combiner, and you spilt him apart to power up the other Primes. It's the only thing that makes any sense to me because, as you said, a 5-piece combiner can't possibly work as a Voyager. Not in any satisfying way at least.

To be fair, the original's legs did swivel outward and even had an ankle tilt. People mistransform him by leaving the jet shell/door thing connected making him into more of a brick than he needs to be.
The new one will still need to be a huge step up in engineering though, I agree there.

I honestly think Energon/Superlink has more of a chance in Studio Series rather than Generations only because the designer Evan Brooks leans more on the Japanese side of Transformer plus the anime was animated by Studio A-Cat and contains the word 'Studio' so by technicality it can be justifiably be in Studio Series. But even then its poor reputation as a result of word by mouth and by idiots like the staff behind TFWiki makes it very unlikely we'll see it in the next 5 or even 10 years.

I somehow never remembered that Jetfire also came with a shield that doubled as his read landing wheels and becomes the chest armor for Optimus. There's no doubt that Jetfire has to be a Commander Class, compare it to what you get in a modern Leader Class toy these days and its a fool's errand to try and make Jetfire be able to combine and be poseable at the same time with Leader budget.

Man I doubt it'll happen since they never think about it but I hope the Minicon peg on Jetfire that Comettor connects to in vehicle mode is still there for a theoretical Commander Class Armada Jetfire. It made for a really convenient mounting point for Minicons and when I still had Optimus and Jetfire back then I would always either mount the Star Saber on that Minicon peg and it would look like Jet Optimus has a sword holstered on his hip, albeit on the right side rather than the typical left side.

I don't think Jetfire is going to make much of the back, same as the original toy. It will have the bare minimum at the waist so Optimus is firmly secured and the rest will be covered by a future Overload.
Just by complexity and size Jetfire will need to be a commander nonetheless, even without forming a huge backpack.

You're missing something important here, the new one isn't going to be just like the original, it's going to need actual joints in legs mode, some of them that the old toy never had: hips, knees and a waist. And this is were things get complicated.
I own the old one, and for it to be updated into pants that aren't a solid brick some good engineering is required. The hips are the main problem here due to how Jetfire's arms turn into the upper legs. It's not as easy as you're thinking, and it's going to require some complexity to keep a good balance between the different modes.

Reminder that two deluxe-sized toys with some added complexity and a trailer of combiner parts is being sold as a Commander. It's absolutely impossible they're going to sell two triplechangers as big as leaders as at that price point. It just makes no sense whatsoever.

If anything what they can do is have Jetfire incluse his own minicon and the three that form the Requiem Blaster, plus a ton of blast effects to pad the thing.

He's a Titan/Headmaster. His head is the only bit that partsforms, and he can pilot his body.
Personally, I'm a fan of the Japanese take on Headmasters, so as far as I'm concerned his head bot is the real Triggerhappy and the body is a Transtector he pilots; I bought him the Blowpipe Battlemaster from Siege, so even though his head is now Triggerhappy, he still has a Blowpipe partner.

It took over 5 years to do that and they were a good 8 years past when TR happen. To make matters worse all three were poorly phoned in with their designs based on heavy retools of said 8 year old molds. Submarauder could at best match Skullgrins mold with a retooled fish head and it would look god awful. The odds they do a new mold out of a dead size scale is very fucking low.

I remember being so sure that when we got some listings leaked a few years back that it was a G1 Metroplex, I was (and still am) shocked when we found out it was the Cybertron version. I would really like a G1 Metroplex though, the engineering on the titans has come such a long way from that first one. I'm sure it'll happen sooner or later.

the backpack issue only exists because they're trying to design to specific vehicles.

g1 Arcee will always have *some* form of backpack because the animation team just straight up deleted the rest of her designs car kibble when they "streamlined" the model.

They can come a lot closer, but not at a deluxe size and price point. ss86 style hotrod level engineering could do it though.

Other backpacks, time and time again, are because the car modes need to be a specific thing. Elita-1s canon alt mode requires little to no backpack. But we've only gotten her as a retool or prettool of existing figures.

Solus Prime has a nearly non-existant backpack. How did they do it? by designing her robot mode first and her alt mode second.

Most of the modern original females that aren't body-reuses fall into that category. Airachnid, Strongarm, Windblade, even cyberverse shadowstriker had some potential, she just never got a proper warrior or deluxe class toy

Then the Takara redos kinda made some of that work pointless, but even with those, you still get things like Tigatron's green parts not being metallic or not the right kind of metallic, or BA really needing to be a little less yellow and more orange in some parts..
also those are some interesting paint jobs for sure. they look as if the photo has itself been edited.

Maybe, but I still would have picked the Fusion Cannon she's supposed to have over the flail. The cannon was kind of a big deal for the Beast Wars finale, and since the Titan's alt mode is very clearly intended to be the G1 incarnation of the Nemesis, it's something that really should be there.
