Collecting modern TF is just re-buying the same dozen characters all over again once every year or two, you buy an Optimus Prime and a Megatron and in a couple of years Hasbro is just going to release another, better one, forcing you to buy them again. And again. And again. Even if you don't, you'll still find yourself buying characters that never get any toys otherwise that suddenly make your old Optimus look crap because of a whole decade of engineering improvements, you have to re-buy Optimus again. And don't tell me you're not that autistic, you collect Transformers, you're 100% that autistic.
Meanwhile there is only one G1. Vintage G1 is definitive; everything else is derivative.
For Beast Wars it's a different story, but that's also because they mostly fall into the "once in a lifetime" category of getting like one modern figure ever, so if you're into Beastformers, avoiding the hellish cycle of re-buying is pretty easy.
...which is also probably why nearly all the modern TFs I buy anymore are beastformers, and I don't even care about Beast Wars. Go figure.
