How do you people feel when you put so much time and effort into making a custom figure of a character only for them to eventually release an official verison?

It kinda sucks but at the same time, I take on the lessons I've learned and carry that knowledge over for future customs. Admittedly, this is why I've stopped making customs for the sake of filling in gaps for a collection especially with big lines like Marvel Legends with a lot of coverage in characters. So I only tend to make a custom either for personal fun/experimentation or when it's guaranteed they'll never make a figure with the exact parts and specifications I want for it.

This is why I don't. If we never get official anyway, it's no loss nor gain to me. I live to consoom, and ill wait before I die. I will say that the most ive done was give the old Jazwares Sonic toys balljoint ankles. I discovered that long before Jakks did, and im proud of myself. That thing was donated long ago though

since there's no customs thread up right now.. does anyone know what to do when a ball joint just refuses to stay in the socket? pops right back out. I've had this happen before, though never this badly with such hard, tight plastic, and I ended up messing up at least one attempt at making the socket larger or filing down the ball

also so far my plans to add custom figures to a given line are ones I'm pretty sure they'll never do.

You can use soft plastic putty/glue and apply it inside the socket. Similarly, you can fill in the socket with hot glue and let the ball joint rest inside. Helps to grease the ball joint with petroleum jelly like Vaseline so it doesn't get stuck when you're letting it cure.

Do you mean it fits well but still manages to pop out? Depending on the joint, the tolerances aren't giving enough way with each other. You already mentioned to ways of fixing that: either you drill further into the socket to give the joint better clearances or file down the actual balljoint.

it's hard to get it in, but if I force it in, it spits it back out if I touch it even slightly. works better at an angle.
I think the plastic is just too hard, too tight..
so are there TECHNIQUES to either of these or is it just 'try to keep it spherical, fucknuts'
because I don't recall if my dremel has some kind of .. ball.. grinder..

I guess the closest "technique" I can advise is dremeling the socket to allow enough clearance for the ball to move freely while keeping the outer rim of the socket untouched so it can still lock the ball joint in place. Sometimes I also tend to dremel deeper (not wider) into the socket, to give the joint enough distance to get lodged into the hole. For me, that's a little easier than sanding down the balljoint's surface in a consistent way without fucking up its shapeunless you have the skill for it. If

Yep. I had a similar issue with my Mezco Hellboy Sammael's hip joint. One of the swivel hips wouldn't stay on properly even if it was the "right" shape within the socket, but after drilling deeper into the cavity, it gave it enough clearance to get wedged in there and actually stay in place.
