Lots of toy companies, Hasbro already confirmed presence like every year. Mattel is rumoured to showcase their upcoming MotU movie toy line.

Hasbro is also rumoured to reveal their Tron toy line there.

Ay any rate, clear-plastic-good. That's how I like Tron figures. Fuck being realistic because they're toys, and toys need a charm and charisma to sell them. Overall aesthetics matter, especially in the modern toy market with high prices. I wouldn't mind clear black plastic with bright flourescent paint.

That's important in this economy when some of us have to plan our buys ahead when considering the prices.

So this "what we got coming within the next couple of months" shit doesn't work with me, especially since most of it is already-known stuff they already revealed/hinted at during various live streams.

They would even show gray super-sculpey/plasticine prototypes, and I remember some would even show cardboard cutouts of figures planned for the next year just so customers could know what to expect, when to expect it, and plan their finances around it. With toy prices rising every single year for 5 years now, they really really need to put their long-term stuff out there even if just pictures and sculpey mock-ups.

This is where companies like Reaction+ piss me off when it comes to GI Joe. You get no knowledge of anything except for what's due in stores with the next wave due in a month or so.

I am also a comic fan and enough of a fan fan of popular culture that if it was the right comic book artist (and hasn't been in the ten years I've lived in LA), I would have no problem paying to check it out.

But I have no interest in anime actors, cartoon voice actors and D-List celebs. And I appreciate that there are fans of the some of the comic book writers and artists showing up, so far it's not been someone where it would be worth it to me to shell out the admission fee. I can wait for them to come to an LCS instead.

Aesthetics of a toy matter as much as or sometimes more than realism. It needs to have "eyeball appeal" to attract the attention of everyone from kids to adults when in an assortment of lines in a toy aisle. That eyeball appeal is especially important because of modern toy prices.

Toy-makers used to understand that. Now they don't for the most part. There are exceptions, like how this bitch helped the Rattler go well above the funding requirement numbers while three ugly aliens made it hard to get the LAATi funded.

The vintage TRON figures keep going up in value, and even the NECA reissues now sell for stupid-money for reissues. Meanwhile the other stuff really isn't worth a shit. I know Hasbro is gonna fuck up the Tron figures by making them 6" that focuses on being "screen-accurate" which in turn will make them ugly as toys. But I have a "fool's hope" that a miracle will happen, and we'll get something that's actually cool.

I went to SDCC back in 2019 for three days and barely had time to do everything I wanted. Though I also didn't realize all the cool food places were outside and across the street, only thing they had in the show floor back then were hot dogs and peanuts. NYCC has a way better selection of food stands in the show floor, and the Javit's Center at least has a decent food court on the bottom floor.

Overall that whole trip, not including the tickets to the con itself, cost me like $1600 bucks. $600 was the flight to and from alone, $300 was travel/lodging (went with family so saved lots there) and the rest was spent at the con itself. I actually set aside a grand in cash just to spend it on that weekend, and ended up spending my last $20 at the airport on lunch waiting for my flight. I could've easily gotten away with spending less, but I figured that'd be a once in a lifetime trip for me so I went a bit wild.

But yea, the $60-80 a pop for the tickets wasn't even a factor. Not just because they were one of the cheapest parts of the trip, but also because I bought they so far removed from the con itself they never even mattered to the overall budget.

I feel the same way about NYCC and other big cons around me. The ticket itself isn't a long term factor, I bought them six months ago. But the travel, food and actually buying merch at the event are what I budget my money for. SDCC was fun and all, but it's not something I feel I need to ever do again. I'm happy doing NYCC and other local events where I can spend more money on the event itself and only pay the $50ish a day for train tickets to get there and back.

While Mattel themselves may not reveal new figures (surprised they're not going honestly) DC could still reveal toys made by Mattel at their booths. Though they usually indicate when stuff like that is getting revealed so I wouldn't really expect too much.

I did the whole Autograph thing once at my first NYCC, met Bruce Campbell and a few old school wrestlers, had them sign stuff, took a few pics, it was kinda fun.

Not worth the money.

Panels, events and show floor are all I care about now, seeing celebrities is cool and all but overall I've never been big on em and I don't really care about being one of millions of random faces they have to pretend to like for 30 seconds of their lives.

....though I did also meet Amanda Conner and she was super nice, and I didn't pay for her autograph, so that was actually really fun.

SDCC has a policy where the celebrities/artists/etc are supposed to give a single free autograph, so unlike 99% of other conventions, there's no area where people line up just to sell autographs.
I think the only place where a celebrity can sell their autograph without giving it away for free is on the show room floor, but since the show room floor is nothing but vendors and company booths, there's no booth that exclusively deals with it.
I know at other conventions that when they started giving those autograph companies their own area, that sales for vendors/artists plummeted. So i think this is why SDCC doesn't allow them, especially since space is already so limited. Other conventions have space to spare, especially since the last two years have been down in sales.

I remember a year when one of those autograph companies showed up off site near SDCC, but i don't think they showed up again, likely because it wasn't profitable. There used to be quite a few offsite mini-conventions too, but none have reappeared since COVID.

SDCC is one of those few conventions where i've seen offsite shit like that happen at the same time. I've seen offsite concerts, parties, tournaments, etc, but not miniconventions like at SDCC. I've seen twin conventions, but they're super small and basically there to support each other (anime + toy convention across from each other, where entrance fee is basically half price).

Those autograph companies usually don't allow you to even get into the autograph area unless you bought one of their packages, so you can't even get a glimpse of the celebrity.

Whereas at SDCC, the autograph area is right at the entrance where everyone gets their guide books (formerly passes) and bags. And since you can get a free autograph, you can chat up the celebrities without paying a penny, ruining a big selling point for selling autographs.
Hence the autograph area being nearly completely void of the celebrities that you only see at the autograph company sections at other conventions.

So if you want to see big celebrities or even b-listers from STar Trek at SDCC, they're at the company booths (free) or at certain booths (paid) on the show floor, where they clog multiple aisles for an hour. None of these booths exclusively existing just to sell autographs, and these celeb appearances are mostly there so that the booth can attract attention to sell you other shit.

I wish more conventions took up SDCC's policies, because it also keeps fucking karens away. ... which reminds me that i haven't taken photos of my SDCC loot this year. So many booths this years were jsut selling labubus and labubu wannabe shit that i had trouble finding any toys to buy. It's fucking worse than when hipstershit vijnyl toys were popular.

Even larger ones like LACC (and its previous incarnations) is almost not worth it to go, due to the fact that they also have few worthwhile panels and guests. I think they rely too much on celebrities showing up.

I've never been to NYCC, but it sounds pretty close to what SDCC is. A lot of industry and media panels, that makes it worthwhile to go every single day. And since these are bigger conventions, it can take 6 hours to walk the entire showroom floor.... if you don't talk to anyone or actually attempt to buy anything (lines, man!). So combined with going to panels, chatting creators/fans up, and just browsing through shit, it takes multiple days just to see everything on the showroom.
Nevermind there's different events going on in the showroom, so there's always something different going on.

All conventions are just glorified flea markets, so i don't actually like going to conventinos just to buy shit. You can buy shit anywhere, without even paying an entrance fee.
With large conventions, buying shit just happens to be a matter of convenience and happenstance. I might find some great deals or something i never knew existed, but I'm not there to buy merch... except from creators.
And there's tons of creators to meet at every convention. Small ones rarely have creators that you won't find at a large one. There might be a diamond once in a while at a small one, but large ones have diamonds everywhere. .. hence me still going to LACC.

Getting one free signature from a celebrity actually sounds like a great idea from a fan's perspective, it would actually make meeting these people almost worth while. I would love to see that happen at NYCC but I know it never will, even taking photos with celebrities costs absurd amounts of money with the most obscene lines. Waiting 40-60 minutes for a 90 minute panel is one thing, waiting that long for a 30 second photo op...that I'm also paying for...is not worth it.

There used to be a small college centered con by me that was always fun to hit up, but it stopped running around 2012-13. I actually volunteered to work it one year and it was honestly the most fun I ever had at a con. I've been doing nothing but larger cons ever since, NYCC and ANYC mainly, but I do miss that right-down-the-road relaxed feel of a more local event. Even if the panels kinda suck and the show room has nothing good and most of the special guests are wasted (Thomas Jane looked blitzed out his mind that year), the cheap tickets and smaller crowd make it an actually an enjoyable experience.

I went to my local library's first ever "Comic Con" last sunday. It was the dorkiest thing ever and I loved every second of it. Five or six local artist tables, a stamp hunt, a caricaturist, some nerd trivia and "Light Saber Training" panels and all of it was completely free. Spent maybe an hour or two there, brought my 3 y/o in her halloween costume, bought some cheap-o knick knacks from some vendors and learned my Library has both video games AND comic books you can check out. I even saw some cute girls in cosplay, for the full con effect. I'm honestly excited to go again next year, with the kid being a bit older she'll probably enjoy it more as well.

This is my look for this year at SDCC. Almost an equal amount of sketch books and comic books/trades, plus more toys than i bought last year (yeah, barely anything).

That Stargate i bought is for my 1:18 toylines. IT's a big box, but it's a BIT small. Three figures can fit side by side, whereas the real thing 4 people can fit through it side by side. So it's 1:22 or 1:21 scale.
Now i need a ramp.

Also pictured are some animation sheets used to do make the cels. Patlabor and Spriggan. Been growing my collection on these for the past few years.

It's been two months since SDCC, but i think that's it.

I didn't post any of the cheaper freebies and commissioned art

I didn't post my loot right after SDCC, because i actually got the Genuine Chinese Virus 2019. Not surprising, because there were a ton of chinese people at SDCC this year. Never saw so many Chinese tourists at SDCC before.
I was sick for about a month, so i spent most of August in my house coughing and being weak. I had COVID before waaay back in the early days, but that was nothing and it only lasted 3 or 4 days.

That's a Kim Jung-Gi's 2013 sketch book.
I have a couple of his newer ones and some other stuff from him signed.
Pretty sad he's now dead. He used to do collaborative art with Katsuya Terada, who signed the card in this image and also three of the books in that post (THIS THAT, the red book above it, and the mini sketch book between the Cyberpunk and Space Bastards books).
Also, the smaller book (fucking thick) that's next to Kim's book is another sketchbook from his studio. One of his partners signed it for me and did a really nice sketch inside it.

Always love visiting their booths, even buying the same thing year after year, just to get a couple of sketches by them. I'd ask for commissions but, they'er already selling sketch books and sometimes include a sketch for free anyway.

Volunteering was fun and I recommend anyone who has it as an option to do once if they have the time - it's also a good way to get in for free, if that's an issue for people - and in those days, it was for me. Now, I can easily drop the money for a weekend pass and I don't even want to go most of the time and feel too old to stand around all day and answer stupid questions.

My brother does volunteer at SDCC, because he's always worried about being able to get in, due to the fact that SDCC started to sell out because people panicked after one of their preregistration fuck ups. Before that, people could still buy a badge at the convention.
He absolutely hates it, even though he usually volunteers the day before or on preview night. Standing around holding up a sign for hours and answering questions in the hot summer sun sucks, but it ensures he always able to go.

This is despite me hooking him up a free pass for about a decade... BUT even i still buy my pass, because things constantly change at SDCC. I've managed to get a booth before at SDCC and have done panels, but it always depends from year to year.

It's nerd mecca, but it's a fucking lotto, because people are randomly selected in being able to buy a pass no matter who you are and it sells out almost a year ahead.

I can only speak about SDCC: you work a 3 hour shift and you get a normal pass for the day you worked.
Since volunteering is also in demand for SDCC, you MIGHT not be able to just join in. Past volunteers get priority. This also means that you basically need to be open to volunteer everyday, at any hour.
You get to choose, btw, like any job. Say the days you're open and what block of hours you're want to work.

And you can actually move up to important positions if you volunteer long enough. So you can become in charge of a room where they do the panels for 6 hours a day, all without being paid.

I assume NYCC is the same, but i've heard that there's also paid volunteers.

Oh damn, didn't know he died. Saw him do a live drawing (pic related) and Q&A when I hit up SDCC that one year. He and his wife (iirc) translator were pretty funny, I remember him making a point where he was drawing a motorcycle and he explained he had no idea how it worked or what the parts did, but he had a rough idea of what they looked like and if it looks like it could work that's good enough! Probably one of the best moments from that Con for me so kinda sad to hear he passed.

Can't say I know how SDCC or NYCC work, but the one I went to you work a set amount of hours and get access for the whole weekend. It could be during set up before, break down after or during the actual event for certain hours. I managed to get on the Set Up crew so I was there the day and the morning before so I was free for the rest of the weekend to actually attend the con. Certainly a good way to get in for free, and if you work with a good crew it can actually be just as, if not more fun.

I'm too old to do that kind of stuff now, but back when I was young and single, totally worth it.

And that would actually be a pretty big balcony considering that's about 5 feet of space that my loot is laying on, PLUS I'm standing about away foot to take the picture.
My own balcony (not made of concrete) is like 8 feet wide, but maybe 4 feet deep and there's no step. You just step up into the house.

Also, just the paved part of my backyard is bigger than what your house sits on. Maybe twice that if you're a third worlder in an actual city. Note how there's just blackness in the background. Behind me is 2/3rd of the rest of my backyard and over to my left is even more backyard, part of which isn't paved over with concrete because im on a hill.

Always enjoy seeing those 1:18 set ups, would love to get my hands on that big russian truck one day but any chance of that happening is very far away. Still have tons of Acid Rain, Joy Toy and even that Hiya APC tucked away in storage waiting to get opened because right now I don't really have the room for any of it.

Since i like to post about what i get every year at SDCC and always take a picture outside because the lighting is always great in my backyard, my photos tend to be easily recognizable.

This makes me misty eyed. I really wish i had gone to see more of his panels, which is why i started going to see Katsuya Terada's panels, who was friends with Kim. Guy's done a lot of work from movies to anime, and even the first Zeldas and Virtua Fighter.
I'd have gone before, but their panels always filled up. So i take the effort to show up an hour before now.

I didn't know that there were teen girls here. Smaller cons have panels too, and said cons are more down-to-earth. They have no official support from big companies like Hasbro, which is a shame because in Japan toy and model makers do give support to smaller conventions.

If you hate large crowds and long lines, that's fine, but large conventions have everything a small convention has. Whereas small conventions don't have everything a large convention does. There's tons and tons of indie and fanartists at large conventions, especially ones like SDCC who make an effort to stay true to their roots.

You'll find different creators and vendors, but that's just because space is limited and small conventions have different creators/vendors too.

Yeah, large conventions have more commercial shit and fewer people will notice the smaller people, but these creators are usually getting more attention and making more money than they would at smaller conventions. If you look at my loot pictures, most of it is from fan artists and indie creators.

And no, there's no teengirls here. Just jealous manchildren who need to cope.

And that's one thing I noticed different between NYCC and SDCC. NYCC doesn't really have "Draw Panels" all that much, or at least none I know of. The one year I went to SDCC, it was like every half decent popular artist had their own drawing panel, and they're lots of fun. SDCC definitely plays up more of the "Comic" aspects while NYCC seems to be far more generic pop culture. I won't say one is better then the other, but it certainly had a different feel.

NYCC is actually making a point to centralize all it's "Comic Book" stuff in the vendor room this year, so I'm curious if it'll change that feeling.

I do love me some indy stuff, but I tend to buy the mass market crap myself. I'm mostly a toy buyer and there aren't that many "indy" toy makers at these events...yet. The Plunderlings dude shows up at NYCC, and I've gotten something from him every time I seen him, and Nacelle is usually there, but they don't actually have many figures (still waiting for them to do Enemy:The Dictator in Roboforce). Also books are heavier then toys and I got a bad back, so I try to avoid them. Learned that the hard way a few years back when I bought a large book early in the day and by the end of it my legs decide to lose all feeling for a few moments in the middle of artist alley.

It's fun getting old!

I think a lot of other conventions don't do that because they're not actually comic conventinos, they're "pop" conventions, hence using hollywood celebrities to bring in the crowds. Since a lot of the big ones are relatively new (maybe started a decade ago), after comics started dropping off in sales, they don't have much connection to comic books. Even older ones like NYCC (started in the 00s), they got bought out by a corporation that doesn't care about comics, so they're not even run by fans. They chase after what brings in crowds.

SDCC does a thing where they sandwich comic book panels inbetween media/hollywood shit. So if people want to see Paris HIlton or Brad Pit, they need to stick around to see Grant Morrison or an Emily the Strange panel. Of course, since some comics/creators are small and don't get big rooms, they're still going to be some media sandwiching. Animated shows like Avatar: The Last Airbender was first shown off in one of the smaller rooms. The "workshop" room doesn't do this though.

Also, aside from the concrete area, my backyard has a "wooded" area that is basically a large hill. So i used to take outdoor photos back in the day, but that was like 10 years ago. I don't do that anymore because it got overgrown. Raccoons took that area over and they leave shit everywhere, so i haven't returned. I have a smaller side yard, but i'd need to tear shit out to recreate the afghanistan-like villages and ambush roads i used to create.

.. while trying to see if i still had any photos from back then, i managed to find oldass SDCC pics i thought i had lost. Unbought loot i took photos of to get later, but forgot to.

It's almost all hipstershit stuff and customs. It's cool for what it is, but they're not really stuff you would want to play with. It's basically what you also see at other conventions, which you've undoubtedly seen.
I don't think there's really any convention that has the indy toylines you actualy want to buy. They're all spread out and SDCC has most of them, but i think other conventions have more vendors with more variety of toys. Big conventions tend to focus on the hyped shit, hence this year being crowded with Labubu shit and its wannabes. I've gotten rarer finds at medium sized conventions than SDCC and others.

Old loot pic from 2015 that i thought i lost. That bag is full of mini Starblazers/Battleship Yamato 2199 models. If you look at my loot pictures over the years, you can see how since 2022 (when convention season again started again after COVID), that toys aren't as important to conventions anymore. At least, ones aimed at stuff /toy/ would like. So the last time my loot pictures were full of toys was 2019.

Also also also, I'm probably older than you and have no problem lugging around a backpack and bags full of heavyass trades and artbooks. It's only this year at the end of the convention when i actually felt bad walking to my car with my last minute buys. I was huffing and puffing, and thought it was just because the day was hot and was in a rush. Turns out, i had COVID.

... just spent an hour looking through my old con videos and it makes me feel old and ugly. I used to meet so many people before, even just hitting it off with random people in lines or watching something. The COVID lockdowns ruined everything

Depends on how many they need, it's a very variable set up. But there's usually two big main stages and probably a half dozen or more medium rooms and a ton of even smaller rooms. Overall, not counting autograph and photo rooms, there's like 20+ actual panel rooms and stages.

There don't tend to be special features on these kind of things anymore, and I know someone who has a printing company that I could have print out a high quality cover for me to use on the packaging, if I were to go that route. I'd honestly much prefer to just download it to my NAS and stream it to any of my devices. Physical media is nice, but if I can get it for free from the internet and just store it locally, I'd rather do that.
