How would you create a food-based toy that's innovative and marketable, but wouldn't become completely useless the minute it falls out of style and the refills get discontinued?

I've never seen that in stores. But it does use apples which are easy to find. I suppose one reason the Easy-Bake has survived for so long is its recipes are just scaled-down cake mix.

Instead of selling refills, bundle the kit with a small recipe booklet for making more stuff. "DLC" could come in the form of extra mini-cookbooks to make even more stuff with your food playset. Keeps the toy theoretically useable forever (barring breakage) and introduces very basic cooking concepts to kids.
