The Plarail line still exists if importing is an option for you. I only have a few engines + 2nd hand track from FaceBook Marketplace. The new playsets are genuinely awful as the engines quite literally aren't designed to run on them properly, lots of derailments since their fronts aren't weighted.

Damn, no more plarail in the states? Maybe when this tarriff shit calms down I can invest in it. I had those as a kid and they were awesome. The mattel line doesn't look bad at least.

What bugs me about modern Thomas toy lines is that there's never any expansion packs that are JUST rolling stock. They're just making you buy multiple engines to have a train that's longer that 2 cars. It's frustrating

That was one thing I loved about the early Trackmaster sets. I sometimes regret not getting pic related because it has the only legit narrow-gauge coach of both it and Plarail.
