>>11654275I don't think you should avoid ikea/walmart furniture if you're just using them to hold toys. Yeah, it's cheapshit, but it won't exactly break. You can modify it to make it more stable. Just add brackets or braces. Use glues. Add staples. Very simple add ons that will cost $10-20.
And the alternative is expensive hardwood furniture. There's nothing you can build yourself that really compares to something you need a truck or have delivered to you.
So if you can't afford good furniture, then just use ikea shit (which is little better than walmart).
They sell "higher end" furniture, btw. They just use less cardboard-like backings and more metal. Thicker materials. Hard boards. Metal frames. All this shit is more durable than say a Billy, but it's bulkier and usually less customizable. Plus, mroe expensive.
BTW, I have a Billy and it's lasted me for 2 decades. I added cross bracing on the back, because i didn't like that my books made the cardboard backing bulge out if i slide them back. So metal supports made the billy more rigid and survive a move + multiple room changes.
