Same with Cordon and Sunstreaker - the plate is attached to the back of the head like on the original toy, but the head itself uses a ball joint now instead of a simple hinge, so the head (with plate attached) can now turn and even look up and down a bit.

At least when like, when they did high-end high-detail posable kits of old zoids, they still kinda did some upgrading, so it wasn't just the same old spindly weird robot parts but now with joints.

Well, the whole point of Missing Link is "What if the original 80's toys had modern articulation?". It wasn't about making the old toys look better - we have modern figures for that - it was about keeping the looks of the original toys while making them into less of a brick. This is ultimately a nostalgia line - the head plates, spindly limbs, and overall janky proportions are there because that's what the now-40-year-old toys looked like when they first hit toy shelves way back when. All that's been changed is that they now have modern articulation.

My #1 transforming robot this year wasn’t a Transformer *cough*Metal Cardbot*cough* but the best Transformer I bought was definitely Haslab Deathsaurus. In fact he's the best Transformer I've bought in years, probably since MP Inferno.

it'd be nice if inferno had wrist swivels (or even better, ball joints) and wasn't always 'cmawwwwn ova heah' with his hands. and also could aim the ant head gun properly
Bonecrusher and Jetstorm would be a lot cooler if you could more manually position their kibble, instead of being stuck in one awkward orientation.
Spittor would be improved by being able to actually position his frog legs as convincing arms, etc.

I really hope Hasbro starts switching to more MTOs in the future instead of Haslabs. It makes it easier to reissue, doesn’t have to build up support, and doesn’t require Hasbro to add a bunch of random exclusive tiers

yeah, given how unappealing I found most retail TFs to be this year, picrel probably would have been my favorite, but he got delayed 'til February. I was going to say Missing Link Prime, but I forgot he was already well over a year ago, christ.

Speaking of Brave, I've now opened Toyrise Exkaiser.
He's a pretty solid deluxe, if on the smaller end. As the comparison with AotP deluxes should show

The listing itself says "Action Gokin". I don't have much experience, but I've only heard good stuff about "Gokin" adjacent toys. The main complaints seem to be that they're expensive as shit, but most collectors seem to think they're worth it. With mainline TF prices on the rise, and them getting cheeky and charging $40+ for any heap of yellowing plastic they feel like calling a "voyager", suddenly paying $100-200 for a gokin or a missing link starts to seem less ridiuclous.

Anyway, I hope Delta Magnus is good. He's the only official TF purchase I'm planning on over the next year. I'd love to get a nice smattering of carbots to load his trailer up with. I wonder how deep they're planning to go with Missing Link.

Same, but that's mostly because this is my favorite robot design ever. As far as fun to handle toys go, S86 Devastator or SS86 Megatron are better.

It's the Japanese term for diecast toys, multiple companies use it for their branding. Doesn't really mean anything.

Action Toys, though is an ex-3P TF company (Fansproject/Maketoys) so they tend to be veer closer to TF design-sense, like making fully transforming toys instead of relying on substitute parts for fixing the proportions.

That's a respectable take. I never really owned a lot of G1 so this is a good opportunity for me. All I have so far is Prime himself, but goddamn his overall quality is just fantastic, and he's a good toy to play with because the original G1 was a good toy to play with. If they can maintain QC at this standard, I'll happily buy more in the future.

Yeah, that was what attracted me to J Decker. It seems to include optional parts for a cleaner, more model-like appearance, but everything can transform and combine without them, too. They've already got a Duke Fire in the works for the inevitable Fire J-Decker combo.

idk, my big buy this year was Star Convoy but I found the cross-play with Micromasters lacking and still annoyed by them upscaling Hotrod. I had more fun with the G1 Black Zarak KO.

I honestly don’t mind Hot Rod being a bit upscaled because his last Core was a bit disappointing and I like to headcanon him as the leader of the Micromasters, so he’s bigger than the rest of them. Also, that picture is more proof to me that HasTak really should have made Core class retro Minibots

Is 86 blaster known for having weak back screws or joining? Just got mine and om transforming back to bot mode he threw a shoulder blade screw out, and there's zero grip on trying to screw it back in. Also seems the shoulder rotating and head/neck panel flipping back forces the back and body apart on the right top side

I don't know how to explain this and I'm probably going to sound crazy but

I think transformers has a cassette problem. There's only two deployers, blaster and soundwave. There's a lot of cassettes but they need to be pack-ins or exclusives because they can't be sold normally in the toyline because they can only be used in two figures.

I think this series needs more characters capable of storing cassettes. ER Doubledealer could.

And Soundblaster exists as a clone and not a rebuilt Soundwave in some continuities. You don't even have to say he's a clone, he can just be another bot in the same body style no different from the seekers, datsuns, lambos etc. The same could presumably go for Twincast as well.
But even if no fiction exists to support it, there's absolutely nothing stopping anyone from just headcanoning these guys as separate people on their own. I'm always kind of appalled by the lack of imagination a lot of TF fans seem to have.

I literally just did a review on my ML Arcees yesterday, but Airachnid showed up unexpectedly today - she was supposed to arrive with my Quickstrike and Quintus last week, but was split from their order for some reason. Whatever the case, spider-girl is here. I never saw TFOne, so I'm not familiar with how she's portrayed in the movie, but her toy is actually quite fun. First of all, she uses balljoints for most of her limbs (including the bases of her "spider legs", so she's very flexible and easy to pose. It's pretty easy to swing her extra limbs around and make her do her signature "spider walk", and her lower spider legs can be used to help prop her up when putting her in various poses. Sadly, she has no hip rotation, wrist rotation, or ankle tilts, but she doesn't really need them regardless. She comes with two blasters that are compatible with blast effects, and can either be held in her hands or mounted to the backs of her arms.

Her transformation is a bit more complex than I was expecting, which I actually enjoyed, though the little hook that connects to the back of her head in alt mode concerns me a bit, since it latches into place and has to be carefully angled down again when turning her back. Rather than becoming a helicopter, this time she turns into some kind of Cybertronian hover drone thing that vaguely reminds me of a Hunter-Killer from the first Terminator movie with the rear turbine of a Half-Life 2 Combine Gunship slapped on; it's pretty neat, and all six of her cannons can fit blast effects. Sadly, she has no peg holes to stick a pose stand into (fortunately, I have plenty with grabber attachments that can hold her).

Overall, she's a solid purchase. I hadn't bought any other characters from One, so I went in not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, they're not that pretty to look at (especially the big front ones), but at least they're long enough and flexible enough to allow her to actually swing them forward so she can walk on them, plus they're strong enough to support her body so she can lift her back legs off the ground; you can even fold her robot legs up into their vehicle mode configuration to somewhat mimic her 'spider abdomen' from Prime. All of her previous toys, where her legs were her helicopter propellers, were too stumpy and limited in how they could be positioned due to them being fixed to the rotor in the center of her back, so the best you could do was have her lie completely flat on her face and kinda-sorta have the tips of the props touch the ground (unless you owned two versions of her original Deluxe toy and cheated by attaching the rotors from both figures to the holes on her sides instead, like pic related).

Kinda seems worthless when the 2 were created to be upgraded forms, they got the same functions all around as their previous selves (tho Twincast acted as a spy on occasions in The Headmasters)

Siege & Cyberverse Soundblasters while being their own individuals from Soundwave, they are still Soundwave2

It isn't the case with the Datsuns, Lamborghinis or most of the Seekers, since these characters were always distincts from each others personality wise

It's closer to using the Super 3 car robot brothers (Speedbreaker, Wildride, Mach Alert) or those Powerlinx/Super Mode recolors as separate ppl, but it's dumb

Hasbro did that for Armada Thundercracker & most Energon recolors, it was retarded af

Insectoids were cool, but Lego UFO was the cooler use of green plastic. He does have that vibe though, I kept thinking about how much he looks like a Bionicle while I was unboxing him. I think Armada and RiD were some of the only other major times and usually whenever Tarantulas gets in a new thing for some reason. And my stupid ass missed out on those Armada toys and the TakoTank. The reason it took years is because the Earthrise Laserbeak was gangmolded with Ravage and the entire mold (along with Soundwave) was Walmart exclusive for several years. We got Wingthing from Ratbat almost immediately. Not sure why we never got Enemy though, maybe the death of Core class and Gen Selects focusing on bigger ticket items.

I'd be okay feelin like "alright, I just have to buy less stuff, only get the best, they're worth the price" but they aren't at all.
Like imagine if prices were rising because, across the board, they decided to load everything with a million extra joints and panels and supremely detailed paint apps. It'd be a WEIRD choice, but it wouldn't feel like this feels. It's funny how many people have been complaining about how "janky" and "garbage" the ML figures look. Like, they can't wrap their heads around the fact that these aren't supposed to look like the comics or cartoons - they're based on either the original toys but with added joints, or concept art of unproduced toys and accessories that never saw the light of day. They look the way they do because they're all 40+ year old designs and ideas; that's literally the whole point, and you're supposed to go into the line knowing that in advance, so...why are people complaining? It's not like the mainline toys have been discontinued or replaced - there's always a shiny new Optimus, Megatron, or Bee of some sort every few years - so why don't they just stick to those instead of bitching about the way these things look if it's not to their tastes and they clearly weren't planning on buying them to begin with?

While I'd probably be considered a tooner by most here because I just want stuff that looks like the G1 and Beast Wars cartoons, I don't see anything wrong with the Missing Link figures. I've been reading scans of the Marvel UK comics over the last year that have all the old toy ads and they've really made me appreciate the G1 toy aesthetic. While a lot of them barely resemble the characters they're meant to represent, those designs do have their unique appeal. I've been thinking of picking up ML Optimus in toy colors (since I've already got SS86 for G1 cartoon accuracy), but it's hard to justify spending 120 bucks on a nostalgia toy I have no real nostalgia for.

I have a lot of love for 1990s CGI shows like ReBoot, Beast Wars, and Shadow Raiders but I would prefer the toy designs. There was just a lot of cool details that were changed and the designs didn't age well as something like Reboot. Fur detail becomes textures and shit like that too. No mutant masks.

I'd even go a step further and say I want toys based off of the box art with insane amount of detail like something out of Guyver and animal parts that look like a high end model kit or something.

I don't know if its just Japanese headcanon or some deep lore but I love shit like this. Probably because I grew up with weird name reuses in Beast Wars. Man, I hate when stuff like that happens because it just makes things more confusing. I think Hasbro is way too obsessed with name consistency even when it’s not correct. Stepper is one example but one that I’ve talked about before is the renaming of Lio Convoy to Leo Prime, which has caused a ton of confusion over the Beast Era naming conventions. Lio, Big, and Fire are not Primes, if anything they are Primals, just like Optimus Primal. They are not the leaders of the Maximals and while they are the Supreme Commanders, that title does not make someone a Prime, as shown with Fortress, Ginrai, Star Saber, and Diatlas, all of whom aren’t Primes or Convoys.

My take on the names is, keep the names the same if they're shortened versions of the western name, but change then if their Japanese counterparts are very different characters and or have different paint jobs. Example:

-Most Headmasters characters should keep their western names, the only major exception is Megazarak, because he later becomes Black Zarak. Meanwhile, everyone in Masterforce should keep their Japanese names, with the season names being interchangeable depending on the owners preference since the way they work is completely different to their western versions.

-Car Robots should also be the Japanese names because most of the unique names come from here.

The shockwave is what they call legend scale which is close to core class, but he does look pretty great

we're basically stuck with Leo Prime cause that is how the western retail market were introduced to the character back in 2007 at a time when heavy localization and trademarking made more sense. Since Big Convoy has never had another original toy or homage until now, he has always been called Big Convoy since his debut in 1999 worldwide. i'm really grateful because Big Prime would sound retarded.

I think one reason we don't see the localization anymore is cause the Japanese names are actually easier to trademark now, who the fuck else in the US toy industry is gonna use a name like Goryu or Black Roritichi? the only reason Hellbat got renamed for the HasLab is cause DC has their own Hellbat character now.

That looks like stressed plastic after they inserted the pin. It's more visible on clear plastic.

Got my hands on the Hearts Of Steel Optimus and Starscream pack. Really really cool, and looks fantastic. But Optimus feels cheap for some reason. In fact his plastic feels like Studio Series TF:O Optimus did, and if I recall it was on his kegs too. I wonder if thats just how the Blue plastic turns out sometimes when thin? Almost concerned we'll see a newly coined BPS in the future. I've had many Generations figures since I've started collecting and only a couple of them have had this cheap feeling. Otherwise though hes cool as hell.

Just tilt the black connector piece on the shoulder a little so the yellow catch on Silverbolt's feet has space to slide under it. It's extremely easy to remove compared to Menasor's, pretty sure most people don't even click those in place because they didn't even notice they go further down.

I own the original and the fins have never fallen off, and you can prop him up by positioning the fins diagonally (I mean diagonally when looking from the sides, they obviously have to be in a diagonal from the front).

Granted I don't know how the tolerances are on the reissue.

I finished up building Flame Toys Megs today! All I have left now is to put on the stickers. I really like what they did with his tail-arm. It's a nice change and it makes for a very cool weapon. His head is a little small, but I suppose it fits the aesthetic.

i wish I was more excited about a potential tm2 cybershark repaint, but that snot-green and silver with electric-salmon-orange-pink detailing is NOT my favorite flavor of colors. . CW figures have weird proportions simply due to the limitations of making deluxes quadruple changers and having to fit four ports onto a Voyager figure. The combined mode then suffers from the awkward voyager port placement.

I think that a modern combiner wars franchise would work best as deluxe+ figures (30$ in exchange for extra budget) and then a leader.

Or, y'know, you could just look at wild king.

That's Transformers Cloud Hellwarp. It's a reference to Hellscream but they're different characters. They even are shown together in the pack in comic. And the colourscheme is obviously from Skywarp.

I think the jank and kitsch factors are a bonus, but what I find most appealing about Missing Link is that we're getting figures with the alt mode prioritized over the bot mode again. The whole thing with Diaclone (and thus, Transformers) was realistic toy vehicles that turned into robots in the most effective way possible, and, to me, that's a far more enjoyable toy concept than whatever the fuck we've been getting in mainline or MP for the past several years.

Deluxes and Voyagers ($20-40 range) is typically what I recommend people start with. They’re what I’d consider the closest to the “generic action figure size” of Transformers, with Deluxes being around 5-6 inches tall and Voyagers being around 6-7 inches tall. TFWiki typically has pages covering every toyline and what sizes certain characters are

I also meant to mention that Deluxe and Voyager tend to cover a pretty wide margin of characters. The only characters you’d miss out on are intentionally bigger characters like Ultra Magnus who wouldn’t really work at those sizes

It will always be the case. Hasbro scrapped Core class because the tooling costs were negligibly different to Deluxe. It made no business sense spend the same on manufacturing as a Deluxe but sell it at half the price, and it never will.

That’s just what happens when you put the mad mind of Hirofumi Ichikawa on bio duties (complementary). Dillo's original bio talked about how he was trained by an ancient Autobot to use a chained mace, which was a deep callback to one of the ancient Autobots shown in flashbacks who had the same weapon. This Autobot was shown to be the Prime before Optimus so, of course, he was retconned by Ask Vector Prime into being the G1 cartoon version of Sentinel. Ichikawa-san then took these disparate details and combined them when tasked with giving Sentinel his own Roller for Missing Link's figure. Funnily enough, Dillo isn’t even the only Deployer with connections like this, Rav is implied to have worked with Beta of all characters.

I can’t see how it could.
The shoulders being wider means the arms will sit higher on the back in beast mode, so they won’t be able to peg into the back. The wider shoulder pads will mean the head halves can’t peg together. The platform shoes absolutely will need to be removed as they’re a single piece that blocks the transformation joints in the foot and could never fit inside the leg.

Marv Wolfman who was one of the G1 story editors and cartoon writers also was the guy that came up with the original pitch for Beast Machines, its probably why there's a lot more callbacks to G1 than you would think in BM. Bob Skir and Marty Isenberg loved the BM treatment Marv wrote that they decided to work on the show instead of the Avengers cartoon they were trying to get off the ground (that show became United They Stand). Skir decided to hire Wolfman as one of the writers cause he kind of felt bad for taking over his concept and wanted to at least repay him back.

now i don't know if Wolfman worked on the toy bios but its still interesting how G1 snuck itself back in to Beast Machines.

I'm pretty sure that's what was intended, yes. We're told early on that Vector Sigma/The Oracle had decided that going Technorganic (NOT fully organic, like Primal had initially believed) was the only way for their species to advance. Having organic bits meant Cybertronians could now accept a far greater range of fuel sources other than bring reliant on solely Energeon, injuries could regenerate on their own instead of needing to be patched or replaced with spare parts, and reproduction no longer required searching for a Spark from a hotspot or needing a factory and raw materials to build a body to house it (or whatever the canon was at the time BM was made). The mechanical components would make them more durable, while the organic ones would give them more flexibility, this making it the logical next step in their evolution, and it's reasonable to believe Vector Sigma would have reformatted every lifeform on the planet to "upgrade" them rather than just stopping at the planet itself.
