Lots of speculation right now, but supposedly the license already has a new home. We just won't know with who, publicly, for a bit yet.

That's still a wild thing to do though. They'd be making much money money collecting royalties from a TON of companies, rather than one or two for a tighter master license. TMNT isn't the level of Marvel, DC, or Star Wars in its hey day. Could they be that foolish?

If the licensing cost is what did this, that pretty much guarantees only Hasbro or Mattel could afford it. Spinmaster, Jazwares and Jakks are about the same level as Playmates I think. McFarlane, Jada and Neca are too small and don't have the capability to produce all the volume of kid product that's needed.

I really wouldn't put it past them. There are a lot of tmnt toys available right now and despite how many choices there are most of them are selling really well; they probably decided the license is worth much more than what they were charging. At least neca has more or less finished the cartoon line, S7 pretty much hung their hat up, and joytoy sped through the important characters and is about to get a van out. If it all gets reduced to hasbro or mattel being the only ones making them I'm just done buying, I'm happy enough with what I have to not buy their shitty toys.

DC was supposedly too expensive for small companies like McFarlane to get the license, yet they managed to get the license anyway.

McFarlane Toys was able to afford the DC license thanks to the massive success of their Five Nights at Freddys legos and the DC line was an even bigger seller than FNaF for McFarlane. So it's possible McFarlane can get TMNT now, because they made a shit ton of money from DC and now they're left without anything after Mattel managed to get the license back.
McFarlane Toys right now has the money to buy any license it wants because they have a ton of money that's burning up in their wallet that needs to get spent.

... but is the TMNT children's toys/mass market license worth it right now? McFarlane got the comic license and they're now able to make TMNT figures. No one talks about any of the cartoons. The last movie bombed. .. the previous movie before that bombed. the next movie is a fuckup that got canceled without getting released and will now be something else. So for the next 3-4 years, TMNT's future is pretty shit and that's how long a license generally lasts. It might be better to wait it out and let some other company put up with the shit sandwich.

This may be why Playmates didn't renew its license, especially with Paramount increasing the cost. Their current stuff sold like shit because the current TMNT is shit, so they're better off without the TMNT license. Maybe they hope that the next company who licenses it will find out it's a costly shit sandwich and ditch it... hopefully once the economy starts to recover and Paramount finaly decides to make something good.

This isn't about immediate money. It's more likely that Ellison has shares in the companies that he would prefer to handle the license, or has friends that do. Like how Cheney and Rumsfeld profited from the invasion of Iraq because of their ties to Halliburton.

How does the latter suck?
At the very least we get a non-shitty TMNT version of MOTU Origins (Possibly with SS and ED guest stars a la Sun-Man in Origins and the Usagi appearances) and a "Turtleverse" line IE fully-articulated 7 inch figures with new designs but pieces to make "default" versions of the characters a la New Eternia.
Maybe even new micro playsets as well given the JW ones.

McFarlane could only afford the DC license because it was split with kids stuff to Spinmaster and collector stuff to McFarlane.

Also you are making a big assumption that DC made a huge amount of money for McFarlane despite all that issues they had like having to overpay for shipping containers in 2020-2021 and their frequent new, highly specific mold philosophy at the start of the line which didn't leave them with a lot of reusable molds. You're also assuming what they did earn has not already been spent getting the licenses like Avatar, Marvel statues, Fallout, sports statues again, etc.

Since their books aren't public, none of us know what kind of shape they are in but given they had to raise prices on DCMV multiple times and have gone to 35 bucks for CEs and created 60 dollar elite editions to exploit their customer base to the fullest, I am not so sure they are doing well.

The amount of toys sold in the cildren's toy aisle is many times more than collector shit.
They made a shit load of money no matter how you look at it.

And yeah, they had their FNAF line in the children's toy aisle before, but do you even remember it there? It had like 3 spaces given to it max.
Whereas the DC line had twice that space in pegs AND shelf space for the larger figures and vehicles. So that's at least 3x the sales from FNAF... nevermind action figures are higher priced than those FNAF sets

And the collector license is seperate from the children's toy license. McFarlane acquired DC Direct so that they could make collector toys. So McFarlane made both childrens and collector lines.
This is why they're currently lawyering up about the Mattel/DC deal, because they want to at least keep on making collector figures through DC Direct, because Mattel took the childrens toy license away from them.

And just to state the obvious: the collector license is obvoiusly way cheap. They're not spendinga lot of money to acquire the license to make statueshit or even collector figures. This is why you hear literal-who companies with no money making DC and Marvel figures, which constantly make appearances in the DC and Marvel General.

I can tell you are mistaken by this. Mattel's press release makes it clear they got the master license, not just the kids license.

Mattel had the master license for DC toys in the 2000s and 2010s, yet Funko, Mezco and DC Direct were making DC collector figures back then too.

And? They also sold Halo and Persia of Persia toys in the chidlren's toy aisle too. But in the 10s, they lost their market and became niche. Walking Dead, Destiny, Call of Duty, etc, they were all niche collector lnies.

Also, FNAF was the biggest seller ever up until that point. They made more money from FNAF than any other toyline up to that point. Halo, Spawn, Minions, Raving Rabids, etc were nothing compared to FNAF.
DC has since taken over as their biggest money maker and they're going to use that money to buy another big license, just like they did with their FNAF money.

It's depressing, because TMNT is in one of its lows and the license holder is asking for even more money from its licensees.

Paramount is basically acting like TMNT's current media isn't shit, and won't continue being shit for the foreseeable future, and it's worth even more money than at one of their greatest all time highs from like a decade ago.

Also, it kinda strips away any potential Playmates has, because they are capable of producing some good shit, but it's hard for them to do that if the current media is shit and they can't give their toys the budgets they deserve. Improvements couldn't be made, but this is just speculation and hopefullness.
And now hope is gone, which is also depressing.

Because it was 1990, which absorbs embarrassing 1980s designs like some sort of overflow tank. Like MC Hammer. Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em was released in 1990, but it was recorded in 1989. The 80s might have been finished, but the 80s style cringe kept going well into the next decade. ALF anf Full House are examples of 80s cringe that spilled over into the next decade.

To be more exact; the 1980s lasted until late 1991/early 1992. It took the one-two punch of Nirvana's Nevermind and Beverly Hills 90210, for the 80s to become uncool as the former launched Grunge and it's fashion while 90210 brought back a more classic/timeless look to teen fashion that was akin to preppy/James Dean esque clothing for teens being cool as a foil for the grunge fashion look.

Not really how that works no, Hasbro is not under any obligation to not do contract work with multiple rival companies. Since that is pretty much what they always have done.

The bigger issue is that Hasbro would just sit on the license and not make anything after having too much to produce in a year and spreading themselves too thin.

The current era of media stagnation and flashback/nostalgia has a lot of people today not really understanding how things worked back then.

Yes but Nickelodeon has been very prudish with most collab, everything anon mentioned was shared in the past. The short of it is these IP holders get uppity of their characters not being instantly recognizable so it can lead to some of the most banal crossover offerings.

Hasbro is also very restrictive with sharing IPs, Brian Flynn said he was in talks with Hasbro for nine years before they gave him the OK to do GIJoe figures of any kind. Flame Toys took over five years for the right to make the Model kits. Mattel was in the works to do a Transforming Hot Wheels figure since 2018. If what we are seeing is "real" it has to be a pitch to try and convince Hasbro to allow the usage. Except neither version of Mikey had completely removable armor, so that claim is a load of bullshit. The first Mikey had the battle armor with the H as his torso, and the second one had a metallic breastplate for the torso. It was one of my only complaints about the line apart from some of the exclusives being a bitch to get.

McFarlane bought the license that Loyal Subjects was using, so the amount of licenses out there are pretty limited.
Mattel owns MoTU, so that license that Mattel was using was specifically jsut for a cross over.
Playmates doesn't really own any IPs that are worth crossing over for. They have a bunch of baby shit and that's it. So they'd have to ask permission to make a cross over on behalf of the IP owner and that's unlikely.

Again, as cited up above, the source is Msmithtmnt on Instagram, a person who regularly has confirmed leaks that Pixel Dan has used as a source before. It's extremely unlikely to be false. The images even show parts reuse from those new remastered figures. The Cobra Commander Shredder has the same shitty hands that don't really hold his weapons. There's no reason to disbelieve the leak. They even have the same Asian writing on the pics that the remastered turtles leaks have.

Bit of an aside here but I suspect playmates' plan post-turtles is going to rely heavily on GvK and Hasbro. You're going to see their turtles team get tasked with Godzilla merchandise, and aside from just importing bandai vinyls, you can expect to see playmates try and get a godzilla collector line going too. I wouldnt put it past them to localize that ongoing godzilla line everyone's raving about now. As for hasbro, I wouldnt be surprised to see playmates cover o-ring gi joes. They'ed be half the price of super7's releases with more accessories. Joefags would lose their minds.

I'm pretty sure they'd go the Origins route and start with vintage Playmates-inspired before doing shows.
Though one issue is that as opposed to Origins where most of the vintage figures had the same proportions, there are a shitload of TMNT characters that need distinctive body scuplts.

I think they've done a decent job with Monsterverse aswell, but if the time to up their game is now. There's a half hearted quality to their monsterverse releases upto this point. Not to say the figures are bad, but they're certainly underpainted. At this point they really should aim to compete against Mattel's JP/JW offerings. If they want to retain the hold on the market they had with turtles, that'd be a good place to start with.

Gi Joe could be another tentpole win for them too if they fixate on satisfying collector demand for o-ring stuff. Nobody would turn down a <10$ vintage styled Gi Joe in this economy.

They are doing 200x at the moment, and most of the figures rarely share parts. Even ones like MAA who we thought would be mostly reuse has new parts that most of us fully expected to be plucked from He-man.

Hopefully they sub-license TMNT to Playmates to continue reissuing vintage figures and vehicles to be more cost effective. Then just focus on new stuff or takeover the classic remasters and turn it into TMNT Origins instead of what playmates was attempting.

I'd think this could turn into a potential McFarlane situation, where even when it was stated he was losing the DC license he managed to delay things and try everything he could to keep part of it. Mattel didn't have any figures ready yet, and since McFarlane already had a line in production, he got to negotiate an extra year for a transition to Mattel. And we've yet to see who has the TMNT license or their figures, so there could be wiggle room for Playmates to delay.

Playmates owns the molds. So that’s the end of the vintage releases unless they sell them to another company. Which is possible but the reality is they probably don’t even know where most of those molds are in the warehouse and were slowly finding them over the last couple years so whatever hasn’t been released is just gonna rot in storage forever now.

He does says that "nothing's ever cancelled" and "hopefully at some point we will get them out" and "maybe in a year or two" but that's what an indefinite hiatus is. And then he ends that part of the interview with "that's where we're at with these."
No more for now. Which is why they aren't on the 12 days checklist but giant Krang is, because while talking about the toon line he said they still plan to release giant Krang if they can do it for a reasonable price, which was obvious code for "if the tariff situation improves."
There is nothing remotely hinted at about tariffs or "figuring out the pricing" during the TMNT Universal Monsters part of the discussion.

Anybody doing adult collector lines, could be screwed if Hasbro wants to do a TMNT Black Series, or Mattel wants to do TMNT Masterverse. Or even in the off chance that McFarlane has the license. With DC, McFarlane tried to expand into the kids market, even though he didn't have DC for the kids license, by doing Super Powers. McFarlane would probably do both kids and collector figures. Any other Turtle lines at retail could end.

Leonardo lost a hand and used a claw, Donatello became a cyborg, Raphael wore a metal mask over facial damage, Michelangelo got all edgy, Splinter was killed. They made it very clear how much they resented people complaining about the rolling price increases and not being able to justify charging people extra for the larger figures. Maybe whoever ends up with the license will be able to get the 4H team working on the same concept, or even a continuation of the old style with new designs.
