They had to release a second version that had samples for the new figures and it would have just kept going like that because fuck you, you're a kid and you don't get to demand futreproofability, now buy the slop.
Somehow Hasbro managed to do this same basic concept 20 years earlier and did it much better with the Commtech chips that came with Episode I figures. Yes the chips were not in the figures themselves but the functionality was much better and you only needed the one scanner and you were set. You could even save up to four onto the scanner's memory, and it had some fun Star Wars sounds like lasers, lightsabers and explosions built in.
