Model Railway General

I just ordered a couple of cheap Tomix N gauge starter sets (90096 + 90097). Would have liked to get 90095 too, but it was out of stock.

I saw that Target's closeout vendor on line had Lionel stuff on clearance more than the stores and app does but it's still too expensive to get back into unless I had a bigger place with extra EXTRA rooms.

Speaking of price. What is the cheapest scale to get into? Is it HO? N? What about HOn30? Or Z, T? I don't know.

HO is cheapest, followed by N and, if you live in the states, O. Z is pricier, and T is a ripoff. Narrow gauge is generally niche and the only one where things are relatively cheap for are On30 for Western themed railways.

OP here, I gave in and ordered some more shit, since Amazon has a bunch of this stuff significantly cheaper than everywhere else right now, and all the stuff I ordered also had 11% off when buying 2 or more.

So all up I got
>a Tomix starter set (large radius oval) with 1 loco and 2 freight rolling stock
>a Tomix starter set (straight with points) with 1 loco and 2 freight rolling stock
>a Tomix basic track expansion set (couple of points, curves, straights)
>a Kato D51 locootive
>a Kato set of 4 coaches

All up it cost me AU$380 [about US$265], that's including shipping, taxes, etc.

There's a few more things I'd like to get, but I'll hold off on that for now, since they're not really on sale/discounted like this stuff was, and I feel I've spent enough already.

Still the same for the most part. Why are you importing? Even if your specialty is British or German there is a lot of rolling stock stateside and vice versa.

American Three rail O gauge is a lot of fun if you like running big chonky trains in relatively tight spaces, but if you're a rivet counter, it will drive you mad. Case in point. Both of these engines represent Southern 4501 at different points in its excursion career. Neither is an accurate representative of the prototype.

I think there is interest.
I don't have the space but I have fond memories of my Lionel train set from my teenage years, and even more fond interest of a tin train thing when I was very little. It's one of my earliest memories.
But I don't have the space (or really the income) to devote to it. Which doesn't mean I would be interested in praising people's set up or talking about it on occasion, but I'm not sure 4chan is a the place where this crowd would hang out or has the interest to maintain a regular general.

Ebay is vintage trains and ive checked trains, theres barely anything.

Then it seems that you may be right. Oh well. Seems like we are in the same boat. I personally like streetcars from Austria, Germany and Switzerland and since Halling/Ferro Train do not distribute to the U.S, so I have to import directly from them in Austria, which I am wary of doing after a mixup with an imported shipment from Poland where I was charged for Chinese imported goods.

Hornby seems to list a lot of their TT stuff on Amazon, shipped directly from the UK.
I mean I'm Australian so I know international listings differs by country website, but might be worth having a look? I don't know if the UK has any current (((tariffs))) or whatever or how that works since the sets are made in China anyway, buy shipped from the UK.

Alright OP here, I got my packages and played with my trains, and I gotta say, not super impressed with the Tomix (train set grade) locos and rolling stock.
Now on the other hand the Kato D51 and coaches were just great.
Maybe non-set Tomix stuff would be better, sure, but I mean pretty much all the locos/rolling stock I want are from Kato anyway, so I'm thinking maybe I should sell these sets off, and just go full Kato track/controller, rather than Tomix track/controller with Kato locos/stock. I dunno, I'll compare prices, but I know the cheapest way to get a basic oval/points was with Tomix.
