Now that they’ve lost their biggest IP, TMNT, what will they do next? Can Power Rangers and the Monsterverse sustain them on their own, or should they pursue more licenses? I know they picked up Winx, but I’m not sure how well the reboot will perform. Maybe they should license more IPs from Hasbro. I wouldn’t mind seeing G.I. Joe playsets and vehicles. What do you think they should do?

It can tide them over for the next 5 years. A greater emphasis on Hasbro IP could help patch up the loss too. If they treated Godzilla as well as they did Turtles they might find a worthwhile replacement. But they really need a new cash cow to call their own. Obviously those dont fall from trees nowadays.

Care to elaborate? Monsterverse is still going strong, and Godzilla himself is probably the most popular he's ever been. Everything Hasbro could offer them could cover every Christmas season from 2026 to 2031.

The tooling would never be moved from Asia, it would simply transfer hands. Its possible Mattel could just contract the factory it's held in to produce.
Mold ownership transfer between companies has happened, but it's sore of unclear to laymen how it works. Look at Bandai's GoLion Chogokin.
Originally from Popy, then Bandai, licensed to Matchbox in the 80's, then Trenedmasters where it was modified. Was the mold ever moved from it's original factory?

I see them basically being Hasbro's houseboy for the IPs and audiences they don't want to do anymore. If not for Takara existing, I could even see them handling kids Transformers too..then again Playmates and Takara have also had a long history of licensing each other's toys.
You know they even released a Diaclone mold in the 90s?
So expect them doing GI Joe, kid's Marvel/movie lines, kiddie Star Wars stuff. Maybe even resurrecting some IPs
Especially with Hasbro's move downsizing their staff

Considering the failpines, vietnam, thailand, india, and taiwan have all been involved in making toys pre00s..... there's a high chance the mold was moved from its original factory.
Nevermind that factories are shut down all the time even within China.

Once again I point to Funskool's acquiry of the Kenner Batman and Superman molds. It's not common practice but it does happen. Those 2020 Robby the Robot walmart exclusives produced by goldlok toys came from Trendmaster molds found in South Korea. The bulk of toy molds get recycled, but there's nothing saying some dont get saved or set aside for one reason or another.

Moreso than TF I can see Playmates running whole hog with Gi Joe, specifically vintage O-ring offerings. Star Wars and Marvel are just as likely in anycase. I would honestly love to see them mess around with Micronauts or even Inhumanoids but both of those are longshots.

The mini-mutants turtle rover right? Yeah they put out a dozen diaclone molds in that line. Really unexpected even then.

My question is, did the molds actually change factories, though?
I'm trying to see if the stamping on any of them changed to indicate they were made in India- google says Funskool has domestic factories,
What makes Funskool kinda interesting to me is that they're basically locked into being able to use the molds because their Hasbro partnership predates the license ending, so while Hasbro themselves can't use those molds, Funskool never stopped being able to.
The QC is a lot weaker than the classic toys, but it could also be due to age and lower standards, not just the molds being made elsewhere

The story I heard for awhile now was funskool bought the molds off some middleman who was using them as ship anchors. They did have a pre-existing deal with hasbro to release their products as early as 1997/1998. They did the same with a ton of ARAH Gi Joe product too, hence why you can still buy the vintage vamp over there. Ultimately alot of the details are murky and nothing's certain.

The QC alone is enough to confirm these are being produced domestically. I mean even the product photos look rough. Frankly it seems like the molds have held up stunningly well for nearing 30 now,
