If you're used to modern Japanese figures like Figma or anime based figuarts, the style is pretty different, as McFarlane chose to go a somewhat "realistic" route in rendering; i.e. colors are more desaturated and less bright, and textures are far more detailed than animation.
The weird thing is that you may even argue that they aren't based on the movie; but the manga. Akira himself comes with his throne from the manga. So I guess you might say they aren't based on the animation, but the more detailed Otomo art from the manga.
