You can get a decent starter camera for not that much. You don't need a $2000 camera to take pictures of toys.

Check out second hand cameras. You should be able to find an older DSLR for well under a hundred. It won't be fantastic but once you know what you're doing it will be more than good enough for your needs.

This is a pretty nice photo but you really need to think about warmer lighting, especially for that kind of scene. Grab some cheap golden coloured Christmas lights and place them above it, it'll make it seem much cozier and more suited to the holiday.

Some of us still are. I'm still trying to work out which level of white balance to use when working with my lightbox. Pretty much every picture I took just now came out with horribly washed out colors.

That's fixable in post though, and pretty close to being perfect. Deffusing a little would get rid of the harsh light on the face and you'd be good to go.

Well hot damn. I'd tried to make the colors pop a little more in post but it just came out as an ugly, dark mess so I threw it out. What exactly did you to do to it there?

Also I was using the thin white vinyl sides of my lightbox to diffuse the light. I think next time I might try using something a little thicker, or a different angle for the light at least.

I use gimp and mess around with the white balance. There's an option under levels where you can pick a point as reference for white balance, it's super easy and takes like 30 seconds to play with until you get something good.

People have improved a lot over time though, I dare say my images got worse when I transitioned to an Iphone out of convenience.

what lens did you use for this shot? Nice tight focus on the front end of the car and fades to a pleasing bokeh. I need to pick up something other than my 50mm lens. It's not that great for toy photos.

also got the dragon born. fiancee got the lone wanderer and man does the lone wanderer suck. dragon born is alright though. the toys could benefit greatly from a thigh swivel and double jointed elbows.

his feet are very limited. any stance other than this one is useless. this is the only way he stands. the ankle tilts are very awkward too they are at a wonky angle which makes them useless.

and the thing i hate most about the toy. you would figure that thigh swivels would be common place for 6 inch toys. but nope. i could forgive them if the hip joints were not at a fucking Y shape. also i gave up with the very small and bent gun he came with because it would not go in his hand.

Like I realize they were going for wasteland weathering on the suit but it just looks like a toy that's been sitting in some grandma's attic for twenty years gathering dust for so long it's fused to the thing in clumps that won't come off.

Trans-neon green, trans-neon orange, and trans-medium blue pieces all glow under blacklights. I just turn on a blacklight, set my camera's automatic lighting to Spot, and aim it at the glowing part. That makes the glowing part the average brightness, which means the rest of the setting looks dark by comparison.

I have a light box, but rarely use it. Sort of a pain to set up and put away each time I want to take pics.

Last week I got a black curtain my work was going to toss (the last few photos I posted on here utilizing it). Even more of a pain to set up, but allows for more room.

Normally I just use my natural room or outdoor settings. I do need a new light setup though.

I want a background of some sort, even if it isn't a lightbox because my room is small so there's crap everywhere and it makes pics look messy. I have gotten some good outdoor pictures this year but it's too wet and windy where I am to do much of that this time of year.

Well, I had to look it up because I'd never bought one before. Apparently keshi stuff started out as just little japanese eraser toys, but has turned into like it's own thing. I bought this from an artist on Instagram. He's also solid rubber, I was expecting it to be hollow like vinyl.

Noise comes from high ISO. Ideally you want your ISO as low as it can go (100 for most cameras), but in order to get it that low you either need a ton of light in your scene (like daylight), or you need to balance it out with shutter speed and aperture. Read up a little on these terms, it'll teach you more about photography.

Higher ISOs make for more noise, because it's allowing for more light to hit the sensor. Has something to do with red being a predominant color so that's what pics up the most.

Play around with the aperture settings and/or get better lighting. I like to use a muted flash or a desk lamp (if there isn't enough natural light). The pop up flash will cause some harsh contrasts.

Nice Christmas photo though. Can't wait for the Christmas photo thread.
