The toys you buy from Japan are usually made for display. They even say the toy isn't for kids on the box. They aren't meant to be played with, at least not in the way kids do.

American (or should I say Chinese) toys are made for children to play with, so they could throw them at a wall and nothing will happen.

Different production processes/end goals, plus Japan don't make as many of the one figure (even NECA numbers) compared to US brands so allows them more time and budget to focus on the details.

But as far as the work itself they're both probably made in the same toxic Chinese factory.

They might not be intended for children but I think legally they need to comply with US safety laws because American parents will sue over anything.

There was some magnetic ball toy, clearly not intended for babies but wasn’t labelled correctly, and some infant ate the balls so the parents sued.

Difference in target markets, difference in attitudes.

Japan has always catered to older teenager and adult collectors since the days of Popynica chogokins. They don't see there being any inherent stigma in collecting toys, they also have a love of beautifully-made things at any cost ingrained on the national psyche. Further, you have separate divisions at larger companies (Tamashii at Bandai, for example) catering to the adult market, and smaller companies aimed at doing so exclusively (Medicos, for example). These then get sold through speciality retailers like high-end camera shops, etc that allow the companies to charge whatever they see fit for their product.

By contrast, toys have always been targeted at children in the US, they have always been regarded as cheap, disposable playthings and there is (and will probably always be) a level of societal stigma for any adult actively engaged in toy collecting. Large companies like Hasbro and Mattel almost seem to treat the collector market as an imposition, catering to it but not in any capacity that would involve them having to release figures that couldn't also be sold as children's toys or having to release them at a price point of higher than $20. Smaller companies like NECA, even though they're targeting an exclusively adult niche market, are still beholden to the $20 price point so that places like TRU and Wal-Mart will actually stock their figures. American big box retail and its general shittiness is another major contributing factor holding the US toy industry back.

There's a handful of American companies that seem to be trying to break out of this bracket and produce something of comparable price and quality to what we see from Japan and Hong Kong (Mezco, for one), but there's no guarantee they'll succeed.

do you have any examples of American companies doing this? i've seen what appears to be nice looking toys from kickstarter campaigns, but that's about all that i am aware of.

The only thing US parents could do is sue places like Gamestop and Bluefin, who overcharge anyways.

So no, anon, Japan is safe from overly litigious Americans, at least for now. Hell, things are starting to loosen up again now that we're culturally forgetting Mattel's royal fuckups involving lead. I'm seeing more model kit imports/rebrandings, which is a good sign.

Mezco's One:12 Collective, NECA's 'ultimate' figures (the ones in window boxes with enhanced articulation and tons of accessories), etc.

It's slow and limited but some of these companies seem to finally be kicking against the desires of big box tyranny.

This is not a universally true statement.

Transformers, for example, Tomy might slap on more paint apps and strive more for "show accuracy" but the plastic quality, level of paint chipping in the package, stress marks and all that are about the same as Hasbro versions. Maybe moreso because all that extra paint means more to scratch up when a factory worker is shoving the thing into the packaging.

Nope. Do your research.

Look at any of the old vintage Popy commercials on Youtube, or Popy catalog/ print advertisements, and you'll see kids (6-10 year olds and thereabouts). Their first foray into toy making was a collection of henshin belts and plastic add-ons for tricycles so kids could play Kamen Rider.
Their first line were Mazinger z, The Robocon toys, Doreamon, and Norakuro. All geared towards kids.
Hell, the Jumbo Machinder Spacer was a ride on toy for kids.

The adult collector wasn't targeted until the creation of the "Soul of Chogokin" line which started 10 years after Popy had stopped producing, and that was aimed at the kids who were now grownups.

Toy lines geared towards kids dwarfs the amount of stuff geared toward the older/adult collector.
We just don't see a lot of it at places like HLJ, Amiami, and the usual lot because that's not their focus audience.

Pretty much.

Since /toy/ only buys Japanese collector toys, what they get are only higher quality figures. For the US, the high quality collector toys are DCD, Mezco, 3a, etc.
The fact that /toy/ talks about American children's toy so much is because their sculpts are of very high quality you rarely get from Japanese makers even with collector toys. And the fact that they're generally well articulated. Just watch out for QC for paint.

This is the typical kids crap you see from Japanese toy makers. Much worse than you'll see from even Jazwares.

There's a few examples before that(like SiC), but nowhere near the extent of what there is now. before that, the US already had a pretty huge market of toys for adult collectors since the 90's. Now whether you think those figures are any good is another story, but there was definitely an older audience in mind, and comparative to other figures at the time they were aiming for a more quality presentation. That said, if you look at something like McFarlane Samurai Spawn and SiC Hakaider, there isn't a massive difference in terms of quality. same with early Revoltechs and the better Marvel Legends and LoTR stuff from Toy Biz.

Where the gap really begins is around 2006 or 07. A couple factors really killed the leaps the US industry was making. The recession killed a lot of companies and retailers; and a lot of smaller companies like Palisades went belly up. The places these collectors toys were sold, like Suncoast, Sam Goody, KB Toys, and more went out of business, and WalMart wasn't touching these toys. Comic Shops and a select TRUs became the only hope for this market. Toy Biz losing the Marvel license and eventually dissolving was a huge killing blow, because they constantly pushed the envelope with their budget.

That said, I think things have come around massively in the last few years. DCC is a major player now. Neca has made massive leaps in the last few years. Even hasbro, maligned as they are, definitely tries to integrate alternate head and hands on a couple toys in every ML wave.

DCD sells collector toys.
NECA sells collector toys.
McFarlane sells... mass market toys, which is basically collector toys at a children's toys budget. So they're an intermediate brand.
