Back then pencils were supposed to be your starter medium, you learned the basics and then moved on to acrylics.
Then Andreja came along and BAM all of a sudden you have a dozen Andreja clones and more and more people who never stop using them.
They see Andreja still makes money with it and if they just stick to her style nothing can go wrong.
The old artists that have learnt acrylics tend to be less and less nowadays (no surprise, after X years you get tired of painting dolls or offering commissions) and it gets harder to commission people who still can work with them.
You might like the look, a lot of people don't.
Especially on pictures it can look unpleasant and I don't get why people always go on "but I like the doll look".
Acrylics can do the same, guess how people achieved a doll like look before?
The pencils don't make them less realistic, it's some of the stylized parts they use on the face-ups like the huge eyeliner, the super visible eyelid line with the white above, eyebrows without details.
You can achieve that with acrylic too, just that it doesn't look like a piece of coal rubbed on top of coarse sandpaper.
The reason Andreja was well liked is not because of the pencils, most just lived with it because they like the overall look of her dolls, her pictures, her videos.
Just like with SDink, you just see the fawning people on Flickr and co. but only a few of them ever see their work in real-life, yet alone own them.
How many of your fans do you think ever hold a piece of her work in their hands?
It's the same with Culur in this case, people think her stuff looks decent and then you see a non-edited close-up.
