Most kids today still know GI Joe, at least in my area, and i've handled kids at school day in and day out up until a year ago.
Despite what most people think, the GI Joe movies were still popular.
Lanard's crap is seen as budget crap, even by little kids. The Bravo Team and Peacekeeper lines are a step up from that, but even if kids don't buy GI Joe anymore, they've no brand recognition like GI Joe does, inspite of no shelf presense but at TRU.
The only way i don't see kids not knowing what GI Joe is if they weren't old enough to remember the Retaliation line on the shelves, which leaves out the majority of kids that aren't toddlers.
You have to remember that the majority of toys are bought by little kids and they're the ones making the decision on what they want, especially in lines starring favorite actors.
