It's not hard, but there's a lot of things you learn through trial and error. Most guides are incomplete or teach totally awful techniques, so even if you're well informed you can be led down a retarded path without knowing it.
Best guides usually come from /tg/-type mini modelers, since they know you need to thin your paints and how to spray your models, and proper thinning and spray techniques accounts for 50% of making your figure look great.
Larger scale modelers can be lax on that, which can fuck up little details even on larger scale figures.
