Your defense can't be "Well, it's commonly undersood" when all of those people calling you out DIDN'T understand what you meant, because you used the wrong term.
That's the important missing aspect of a colloquialism, is being commonly undersood. We can understand it now only beause you've admited you're intentionally using the wrong term. But if you just say "repaint", most people are going to the simplest, clearest meaning of the term, ie "identical mold with no changes, different colours", rather than a retooled mold.
