Most are just typical looking animu broads with random boat parts thrown onto them, except characters like Shimakaze(?) whose design is just popular fetishes thrown in for maximum otaku pandering. Can't expect otakus to care about well-designed characters when they're controlled by their dicks, after all.

The abyss or whatever chicks, assuming they're from the same series, are really the only decent designs.

Terrible mecha musume. All organic bodies with no mechanical limbs is the easiest and worst way of designing them.
The ship backpacks make some too top heavy to stand without support, and the ones that can don't even look like anthropomorphic boats.

I was turned off from it when i tried getting into the game, and learned that the story and setting is incredibly shallow. At first it lures you in with the allusions to real world history and sense of mystery. But then you realize they have no real intent of making sense out of the enemy fleet, progressing in any way with the 'story', or expanding on what little we do know about the existing characters/ships. It's status quo incarnate. I was hoping they would be forced to create some sort of real narrative with the anime, but it's even more mindless than the game.

I guess this is what fans want though. Immortal, static characters they can worship through fanart and doujinshi. Not the creators actually tacking advantage of the potential the series has.

Boatgirls are hard to get into because of how the licensing has worked out. Nendoroid seems to have the greatest variety of characters, but its a style that doesn't appeal to most people. Next is statueshit which is another subset that's more expensive to get into. Finally is posable figures, where figma seems to be focusing on pedoshit, and Bandai/AGP is doing the larger more intricate characters at a lower quality than figma.

In general its a hard series to collect.

No, I don't think there will ever be crossover between figma and AGP figures. The only new kancolle figma announced at Wonfest was Kashima, plus we saw color protos finally for Prinz Eugene and Super jailbait.

The ones I like the look of (Yuugumos) look cute but they are literally little girls using model kits as nerf guns, which is the case for most of the characters in the series.
Most of the designs make shit toys and they are not even good enough characters to forgive that. Once Kancolle stops being popular, a lot of people will be getting rid of their boatgirls because of that.

Side note: The Mutsu figures on eBay are extremely cheap, were they mass produced or just Chinese knockoffs? I'm gonna try to get my five main girls starting with her, followed by Yukikaze figma. Not sure how I'm gonna find the money for AGP Takao and Haruna, but they will be worth it. I don't have a main sixth girl so I'm not sure who'd I'd get between Nagato, Kaga, or Musashi.

I like most the girls, abyss and otherwise, except for the ones done by what I perceived to be the lead artists initially. Whoever does Fubuki and all the girls in generic school girl uniforms and archery club get-ups. Not only are their main illustrations remarkably dull (most of those girls look like they are falling asleep), their choice in outfits hardly have any creativity put into them. I don't care if the girls have cute outfits, but at least some up with something imaginative.

Considering the type of game kancolle is, it is kinda obvious being 'generic' is an intentional design choice. You have such a massive catalog of different ships that have to be turned into girls who really won't have much character development outside of a few quotes here and there like some rts unit. You want to design the character to fit a broad general anime girl archetype so it can be communicated in that one drawing what to expect is the most likely personality and type of girl the character is.

Trying to argue anything about them is super unique and special and not at all generic outside of a select few characters is just blind fanboyism to me. But on the other side I do not see the genericness as a downside in this sort of case, quite the opposite it is almost necessary means of character description without words. And one can see it as a sort of representation of boats in real life, they tend to all look very much a like with few differences within their classes, so generic animu fits in that respect as well.

I have the Kai version. The paint all around was pretty sloppy, the flowers on her hair in my opinion looks like a glop of pink plastic with poorly applied paint, her detachable bangs kept falling off and I just don't like how they made the translated her 'hole in the skirt' design. Instead of being a real hole which revealed her thighs, it was just painted over the skirt to LOOK like an opening. It's like how transformer fans hate fake kibble in Transformers. Sure it was an improvement to the original one, but for $100 retail it was still pretty bad.
