I think that what we're seeing here with people's negative reactions might be that they aren't used to imagining Bill strictly as the young man he was in the show and are creating a hybridized version of him in their minds combining his more elderly features. After all, to most people it was Shatner in the movies that cemented his cultural status, so that set of aged facial features are going to be what are considered his "defaults." God knows he didn't exactly age gracefully between the show and the first movie...
Possibly another problem is a fuck up on Mezco's part: they didn't nail his trademark smirk. His eyes get smaller and his eyebrows kind of invert upwards at the tip, and he has a really tightly pulled back smirk across his mouth. It's a more playful kind of thing, whereas the smirk they gave him is almost cocky or seductive.
