Adults collecting figures is a very small niche market, now imagine if you reduce this small group of people even more by making a product only appeal a even smaller group... the problem here is, you will have ennough people buying this product to buy the cost of the production? (like the industrial molds) unfortunately the answer is maybe not or not enough to make a decent profit
I only can see mostergirls figures being enough successful since they can appeal to larger number of people
3D printing is the future for the toy/figure niche, no need to spend money on expensive molds and the industrial work to do the figures, just the time of one lonely guy modelling in 3d, this will means we will see a huuuuuuge variety of products, some of them good, some of them crazy as fuck, dont be surprised if in the future someone will sell a collection of futa furries with cocks so big you will need to buy them separately from the main figure... and just cross your fingers to not see people doing extreme fetishes 3d models ready to be printed...
In 5 years I think we will have a huge quality finish machines with a decent prices or external companies printing wherever you bring to them with a reasonable price
Another good thing is the custom aspect, im sure since there is no need to make industrial molds and storage problems you will be able to "custom" your figure, choosing some different body forms, items and variations, remember the game Spore? at some point people will do the same stuff and later print it, the limits of what you will print will be in human imagination, be exited, be scared...
