Bump limit on the previous thread reached and nearly archived.

I like the head of the Saurornitholestes, but I don't enjoy the paint.

I'll probably go for the Velociraptor and Balaur. Those seem like the two best looking to me.

I'm super happy the Kickstarter is pressing towards success regardless of this, but the line should've considered a gimmick option as one of the KS exclusives like 4H do, or the ninja KS sorta did. If there really was something offbeat like a flamingo raptor or something similarly crazy (that didn't require new tooling), it could do wonders to boost numbers, in much the same way Minotaur the Duck or MURRICA bird did, or the old 4H exclusives of lines past like the cow or pink elephant did. Of course, maybe one of the unrevealed designs is already along these lines.

Still undecided on which raptor I want to get to add-on Saurornitholestes later, only ruled out Tsaagan as an option so far.

We might very well see a fun gimmicky one. They're announcing a kickstarter exclusive next week. An exclusive is a perfect figure to have fun with.

I would absolutely buy at least Jurassic park inspired raptors I'd that's what the exclusive was (although I don't think that would happen), but I'm just glad feathered dinos are getting represented as toys. I'm going to tell myself that the fact that the guy actually works in the business means that companies might notice, but I'm not optimistic.

A scaled JP raptor would be an utterly new sculpt, not to mention liable for lawsuit if he scoots too close to JP design. It'll balloon the manufacturing price even more. So far, each raptors only getting one or two brand new body parts, and everything else is a reuse. I highly doubt there will be a scaled raptor. Down the line maybe if David convinces NECA that collector grade dino toys do sell.

Not really, I'm fine either way, just that with scalies at least you have the kenner raptors to go back to for 1/12th scale, but not feathered raptor so it's a good welcome.

However, there wouldn't be that many variant of scaled raptors and you wouldn't get as much excuse as using real bird color palette or having raptor with double sickle claws. I'm gonna pose the feathered raptor probably next to bunch of ninjas, aliens, MGS figures, anime girls and spiderman anyway so there goes "scientific accuracy"

Dino toys are relatively cheap, and unless you go after the JP license, there's no extra fees. And companies saying that Dino toys don't sell is about as rediculous as saying girls don't buy dolls.

At this point, fuck the real companies. The people who are making what we've been asking for, like this KS, deserve the money and success.

You could get away with the raptors, but remember dinosaurs are really big. I don't particularly care about 1/40th dinosaur figures, I want big T-rex or T-rex equivalent that can swallow and crush other humanoid toys. Same deal with Triceratops or Ankylosaurus or whatever.

These guys would be akin to NECA's Deluxe figure line and it's kind of hard to Kickstart due to necessity of different sculpts for each dinos. So you do really need big company backing

Different anon, but to make just a 1/12 Allosaurus at the mean size (~28ft long) you'd basically be making another JP Bull T-Rex in terms of overall dimensions. And at the scale of Marvel Legends it'd be around 32" long (which coincidentally is also 1/12 the length of the largest confirmed Allosaurus assuming Epanterias isn't just a really large Allosaurus).

I'd seriously be happy with a 1/12 allosaurus with Kenner raptor-level of articulation.

Yeah actually I don't even think you need to go nuts with the "celebrity" dinosaurs like Allosaurus, T.rex or the big long neck.

There are a lot of Ceratopsians and Ankylosaurs that are reasonable in sizes. In fact most of them are very reasonable in size and most of the medium size dinosaurs are more interesting in features compared to the big celebrity ones.

For example, Amargasaurus with the sail neck is way cooler than your standard long neck and only the size of an elephant IRL. Same deal with Carnotaurus, Diabloceratops, etc. These mid tier dinosaurs all have unique features with lot's of educational values not found in their bigger counterpart and it'll be great to have a somewhat high quality articulated version of them. I don't even mind a hollow plastic figure as long as the sculpt and articulation are there

Joking aside though, I always wonder how easy it is to reuse mold but alter the scale. The upcoming ceratopsian line assuming this raptor line is a success might need to have various different scales, but all the ceratopsians technically have reusable body-parts. You just need to sculpt new head and readjust the scale of the body

If the raptors are a success, and the ceratopsians also become a success, the logical step would be to build up re-issues and repainted/minor modified figures' profits to secure the resources to make something big and unique like a larger Dino.

They're your best bet for detailed scales and JP replica for sure, but the lack of articulation kind of kills it for many anons here. Also we need a truly big dinosaurs, and Papo's stuff are not really too scale. Finally, they only do popular dinosaurs, most of them being theropods and only basic sauropods/ceratopsians. I'd be nice if some of the more obscure dinos get recognition and figure too

Doubtful. I don't think anybody has any sort of copyright on the JP style raptor because it's too broad of a concept to enforce. That, or the copyright holders just don't care. Plenty of other properties have used the basic design and nothing happened to them.

No, that's not true. Microraptor (tiny raptor with wings on its feet) has been confirmed to be raven black. Anchiornis the first dinosaur feather color to be studied was found to be black and white with red crest. Archaeopteryx the classic bird-reptile missing link also had dark coloration

I will never forget that series, never. Had fun as a young Hork seer in a shockingly well made forum rp back in college. Was good stuff, a shame her attempt to reboot the series for the current generation really didn't turn into a decent success. But then again that's not what we fans who grew up with it wanted. IDK, I'm not really buying it, the coloration change from blue head to grey splotch neck to quick blue to another grey back doesn't translates well to the action figure, it looks like a lazy hasbro job of forgetting to paint certain detail and cannot be bothered with it. This is the first raptor in which I am meh. Gonna get one because it is a KS exclusive, but depending on how it looks in hand probably just gonna scalp it in the aftermarket

I'm not sure how much of a full reboot it was, more like a rewrite of the first few books to better click with the current generation of that age group. Basically replacing a lot of the pop culture references, that sort of thing iirc.

I'm already in for one Atrociraptor, but that blue KS exclusive just looks so striking it's hard to pass up. If it weren't for the Mythic Legion release I'd have no issues getting at least three of these guys, but I spent way too much on them so I'll just be staying with my one lone Raptor.

As stretch goals are hit, the amount of money gonna exponentially increase. This is the nature of toy based KS like the Mythic Legions and Ninja KS. It's not that they're attracting new backers, as the amount of backer rarely increases, it's just manchildren backer doubling down and tripling down to get the stretch goal. Now that double clawed raptor is unlocked, we might catch up to 155k and unlock Adasaurus too

That is exactly what it was. Pretty much a 'modern' rewrite replacing all the pop culture. The covers had a 'holographic' transformation image instead of the series of morphs like the old ones. Only eight were released due to the poor sales.

She really ought to have done something aimed at the original audience of animorphs and not attempt to appeal to the same age group in this day and age. I don't want to pull the usual 'kids this days don't do books' card, I just think the kinds of book series animorphs are don't appeal to the kids of today. But now that this was a wash I doubt she would be able to do a series aimed at us again even if she really wanted to, a real shame.

That's the risk of Kickstarter I guess. You're going blind trusting someone based on their "pitch." But then again, you know the kind of articulation and sculpt quality these figures gonna have. The big black box is whether David could find a decent enough factory for the paintjob (his was impeccable, but as we know rarely mass produced toy paintjob matches the promotional prototype) and the build quality of the figure (some NECA aliens had QC issues, mostly due to the joint manufacturing)

I'm kind of bummed about how dismissive David Silva is about making big deluxe dinosaur toy. Yeah I agree 1/6th scale might be too much (6ft articulated Rex lol) but 1/12th or 1/18th scale should be doable. I don't want anything that's 1/40th scale like other dino statues on the market. Dino figures are meant to be big and could swallow/step on other action figures. NECA had great success with Queen Alien and their 1/4 scale figures, why can't big - 1.5-2ft long Rex/Sauropod, combined with 12-16" long ceratopsian and ankylosaurus line work?

It's just too big. He's right to think it wouldn't work. At least for now. Making a niche market even more niche by increasing the costs by a lot. People might be willing to pay, the question is that the number probably won't be enough to make a worthwhile production run for him. I'd say the 1/6th scale raptors were forgivable. Let's be honest here, who would display the 1/6th raptor next to 1/6th Hot Toys figure? Noone. People would post pictures of Mythic Legions knights fighting the raptors, or figma waifus riding them. This is because Utahraptor/Dakotaraptor sized JP inspired Dromaesaurid is so ingrained in pop culture - so for all intent and purposes these raptors are acceptable 1/12th "big" raptors. 1/12th Triceratops line or Ankylosaurus line shouldn't be that big, they should be about the size of NECA Alien Queen, Power Loader or Predator bike. 1/12th T-rex and Sauropods though is a different story. Maybe David would need backing from NECA and release super special figure to do so. But then again, NECA will release a life size facehugger, and they keep releasing 1/4th scale toys which puzzles me who the fuck buy 1/4th scale toys. NECA certainly had something right

Not sure about sauropods, but I think a 1/12 T-Rex is definitely viable. With enough funds and/or backers you could even keep the cost down to under a couple hundred dollars. There're a lot of variables though, so who knows. But people plonk down hundreds of dollars for Hot Toys vehicles, so a couple hundred for a dino isn't out of the question.

Since this KS has gone over so successfully, I've been researching the production process for a 1/12 Rex. It's definitely something I'd like to happen

Pic related is the size a 1/12 Rex would have to be in relation to a six inch figure. (Sorry for the messy surroundings)

What's the "professional" thing to do then? There are a lot of backers screaming for accessory pack and having their favorite bird color pallette as raptors. The kickstarter was a success beyond the initial prediction. In other kickstarters, stretch goals listed at day 1 are usually fulfilled by the end of the 30 day period. Here the campaign blew all the stretch goals in 15 days. Of course the addition of these items are less professional than the other raptor strech goals, they're not planned at all

But that said the recent sudden slapping on of more and more goals is irritating to me and worries me. Even more so people on the comments, and him more or less encouraging the practice, stating that one shouldn't worry about the seemingly too high goal for whatever reward they want, they should just put down the money and if it doesn't unlock on the final day just reduce the pledge amount before the thing ends. While I can see the merit in that, with all these sudden new high goals slapped on with a few days left, I worry we may get a downward spiral of people pulling money when goals didn't unlock, causing the funding to go below other unlocked goals and those people pulling money too.

Of course I might just be too paranoid, but this project would still instill more confidence in me if he just left it at the original planned goals he had laid out for himself.

What's wrong with giving out more rewards? If your wallet is running dry you can choose not to get the extra rewards. All the pre-planned stretch goals have already been unlocked anyway, it's not that he jettison something planned for an unplanned last minute craziness. There's LITERALLY NOTHING wrong with it.

What sucks is I think he got greedy with the raptor variants and had the accessory packs as later stretch goals after the repaints. There were ~50 ish people who voted for the losing raptor repaints that were turned into stretch goals later on, it is supposed to be one off fun thing rather than a full on line expansion. What's also bullshit is that there's no reward from 205k to 245k. We should've been 4 extra stretch goals deep rather than one and there's no justification for that.

The figures are getting made for sure, and until the last minute stretch goals announcement it was handled incredibly professionally for just a one guy kickstarter. Literally nothing wrong with extending the stretch goals

He has professional experiance in this field, his kickstarter page has a ton of information and pictures, he's posted regular updates and WIP on the figures, he's very clearly been reading the comments and listening to what people want, and he's just been all around transparent about everything.

It's not like he had a page with just a few raptor doodles and totally promised he was up for this. The new stretch goals were only added based on feedback and people asking for more. I'm honestly baffled why people here have been so negative about it.

I think I'm in the middle here, the doom and gloom guy is obviously an autist. The guy is a proven industry professional and I love his works at NECA. However the way he announced the extra stretch goals left something to be desired, so when talking about it in the comments section I was under the impression that the accessory packs were under "free add ons, we have so much money we don't know what to do with it" kind of thing. I'm kinda salty that it was added for a stretch goals on top of the already accumulated pile of money. We didn't get anything unlocked from 205k to 245k. The next 20k are repaints to cater for ~50 backers out of near 2000 backers who lost on a community vote and it's not until 265k that the accessory packs are unlocked.

It does seem he got overexcited with the interest he saw, but he's not really promising the moon here. Its just additional repaints that backers expressed demand for, and a substantial cost for tooling diorama bases. Yes, there should have been stretch goals that we already hit between 205 and 245, but the point in expanding stretch goals is to continue bringing in funding from people already supporting the project. When his express purpose with this kickstarter is showing companies that substantial demand exists for articulated dinosaurs or animals, I don't mind too much that the higher stretch goals are a little haphazard.

My biggest complaint with the whole thing was that he didn't even have concept art for all of the original stretch goals ready to go on day one. Whether that fact shows a lack of preparation, faith, or patience that will carry on isn't entirely clear, but his stated goal of having all the prototypes out before he closes the backerkit paints him in a better light. Especially when the additional prototypes and art thus far have come out at the times he announces. Whether or not he'll have factory problems that delay things or fuck the project over is another question, and one that other toy kickstarters have dealt with successfully, occasionally with way less industry experience.

I highly doubt that these guys gonna get scalped hard, you can still get the Red JP Rex - a 25 years a a literal 2ft long old toy out of production for $25. I doubt there will be a crazy scramble like the 4H stuff, the raptors are kind of interchangeable and there's not that many dino toy fans for it to get scalped. Also you have the benefit of potentially skipping it if for some reason there's a crazy QC issue

It's probably based on commission. He's unveiling the art as the KS goes so he doesn't overpay the artist for stretch goals that will never get unlocked.

Also I'll eat my word. It seems like we're close to getting the environment packs and once one is unlocked a lot of the backers would pour more money into another - unlike the variant raptors. He also might've some trick up his sleeve, like I remember the ninja KS was failing until they revealed the *not Snake Eyes modern ninja, then everyone was scrambling left and right to grab the stretch goals that were unlocked by the minute
