It was done in such a hamfisted way that was totally insensitive of the right people have to choose and explore their own sexual identity. She basically forced him to be gay as a proxy for Bendis who wanted him to be gay. It erased all his history with women over 30+ years. It was also done in such a way that it can't be retconned without a writer being called some homophobe.
This is why I quit reading Marvel.
