When I was a kid, I remember G1 Deluxes (whatever they were called back then) costing around $6. That was a significant amount for my family, considering how much it could buy in (for example) bread, milk, eggs, etc.
Now deluxes are so much more, both in terms of numerical price, but also when you compare it to how much household staples you could buy with the same amount.
That said, $15 doesn't seem as much when you compare it to costs like fuel or cell phone service or the amount one big food shopping trip. Fifteen bucks spent in the toy department may not seem like too much added cost when you throw it on top of the other hundred fifty you're spending in the grocery section of Walmart.
tl;dr Deluxes seem like they cost more when you buy them on their own, but may not seem like as much when you're spending so much more on other stuff.
