You said Star Wars wouldn't be in the "public consciousness" if merch wasn't being constantly released and that it would kill interest in it, but that is not true at all.
There were always fans for SW and creators would still geek out and excite random people just from appearances like with this simpsons episode.
The collector scene back then was probabl as big then as it is now, except people were overpaying a ton of money for loose SW figures because there was no ebay. Star Wars figures were seen as "rare" because of that and among my peers, i was able to trade my older brother's SW figures for a couple of GI Joes EACH.
THESE are fans, people who ENJOY the property for what it is, despite not getting anything new for almost a decade. Just like other fans on this board who collect dead/slow lines. Just like myself and others in this thread who actually love playing with our Acid Rain figures
That guy who wants to sell his collection because there's nothing new coming out? He's just a flavor of the month bandwagoneer. It's sad consumerism of just buying just to have something new.
