Kinda a shame, Chicagofag here. I've been there a few times and its a kinda cool shop even if not my thing. I've spent maybe like $20-30 there at most since as you said, it mostly is "artsy" vinyl toys. They always have a art gallery, I remember being there in October one year and they had some cool Halloween illustration.

I used to live near this shop. Its in an area with outrageous rent and everything in it is 3A and overpriced hipster vinyl stuff. And plush rabbits with mustaches.

It as a nice artsy shop but I was always amazed it managed to stay in business- obviously it wasn't.

it baffles me how these stores even stay open. toys are generally for children, but these arent as artsy as garden decor, floor rugs or some guy's modern art piece. also funkoshit is readily available in places like Gamestop, Target and Hot topic at sale price

i think this store would have some staying power if it was mainly a comic book, vinyl record or retro video game store, and they sold this stuff on the side like how Staples have candy and groceries

I really like Kid Robot's Mega Man shit but I'm not rich or lucky enough to collect everything. And that's not even really artsy shit.

What makes the vinyl toy worth so much? Looking at it, it's a toy built to be produced effectively. You got a body with mostly zero articulation that can be pumped out quickly, paint is sprayed on or print screened and you can use 1 body with a different paint job to make 100s of variations

1. Things that are 'art' are usually overpriced for what they are, the more famous the artist, the more they charge.
2. Exclusivity. Limited edition, one a few hundred? Only 10? Well that means you can charge more $$$$$
3. This is just speculation but I doubt it is that cheap to make these small batches of toys, and I hear molds are hella expensive.

Resin is about $60 a gallon. A very small amount of Silicone costs about $25. Not including clay, coloring, and your mold box you're looking at almost $100 from the start in your production materials.

Then add to that the fact that you have to cast each one by hand, which includes measuring materials and vacuum pressurizing the mold, then waiting up to 24 hours per cast for curing depending on your resin. Anything handmade is always more expensive since you're paying for labor as well as the product.
