Big Boss was the one who went into a coma, not medic. The tapes from post-truth mission reveal that they had artificially induced Venom into a coma and through hypnotherapy, turned him into Big Boss. Big Boss himself woke up before Venom, but as to when he did is still a mystery.
And I know this is a paper-thin explanation, since the first thing BB tells Venom is that "he was looking after him for the last 9 years" in the beginning. That comment could also be regarded as a feint to make sure Venom doesn't realize who he really is.
