Why is every mech in modern media still humanoid? I know historically it's because it was just men in suits, but humanoid mechs are so impractical.

If they're able to balance well, move fast, i don't see how it's impractical. They have agility due to the nature of their form, they have hands to do things some tools can't. They also have a form that's capable of strong movements in the arms or legs. Can carry a wide variety of weapons and switch between them like a human could. Outside of pure speed (assuming land speed, and not some absurd jetpack the humanoid mech might have), what couldn't it do that any single non humanoid mech can? I assume no transforming robots also otherwise the humanoid could just as easily turn into whatever.

Are you assuming mecha with better designs than humanoid? Or are you just talking generally, because I won't dispute that. But if we use your last phrase of "God's Perfect Design", wouldn't the perfect mecha be that in the form of man?

Also, I would like to add to anon's argument that we've been developing mechanical prosthetic limbs that one can control as they would their natural limbs. As that technology becomes more refined, we could theoretically build such equipment in larger scale. So now, imagine something similar to japanese anime, where a pilot literally can use his mind's neural impulses to control a giant humanoid battle mech. Sure you could make non-humanoid drones, but with a humanoid mech, one could literally use their natural instincts for control.

By your logic armor will never be practical for anything after the invention of guns. Remember when full plate armor became completely fucking worthless after the age of guns started? Oh look, as technology improved body armor became useful again!

As technology improves there are plenty of applications for giant robots, exoskeleton suits, etc. We just haven't reached that point yet. Just like we don't have flying cars and all other manner of future tech. You don't know what the hell will happen. You can only speak about current day military standards.

Not OP, but my concern with such systems was demonstrated in the MST3K movie when Mike was using the motion-control gloves to get the Hubble off the satellite. Pic related happened when he unconsciously wiped sweat off his forehead.

I always reasoned that a human based frame allows for a better application of tools and weapons. Melee weapons being a key factor if projectile weapons are ineffective.

That being said, there is a sad lack of non-humaniod mechs that exist alongside humanoid mechs. Where are the robo attack dogs and drone swarms?
