Check out aliexpress, look for figures with lots of orders and ratings. If you look at the feedback section you can find in-hand photos of the figures posted by real people.

The paint apps don't usually match up with the promo pics but sometimes you get lucky.

Their not always KO though, a lot of times their factory rejects. The quality plastic will be good, but paint apps will be terrible or you will receive one with mismatched parts. I try to avoid them at all costs after a few bad experiences.

Depends on the company (there's a lot of them). I have a KO Metal Build 00 and the detail is near impeccable, on top of being solid as a rock.

Honestly makes me consider passing on the official release.

If you're after a statue (or treat the figure as a statue), it's usually safe but anything overly articulate with plastic joints is probably going to have problems. But like anything It pays to do some research first.

If this one didnt have the crap feet, it would be amazing.

The articulation could use some fixing up because it slightly impedes itself.

The feet are awful. The tongue swaps to a normal one.

I worry about their safety more than anything, then whether the picture is the actual sample second. It looks like the feedback tends to vary a lot on the latter.

I'd be willing to risk the low prices though if I knew they weren't going to fuck me up. I don't want to handle or breathe in toxic paint or plastic. Every time I ask about that I just get advice like "hurp well don't shove it in ur ass anon" so I've never felt particularly convinced about their actual safety for basic posing and having around.

The whole toxic paints thing came from lead paint being used way back when and Chinese cutting corners, the only danger these pose to people if you actually go out of your way to consume that shit or lick it (kids liked to chew that shit as well.)

So you're safe to buy a bootleg or two actually.

I got a bootlwg atlas as well! Joints feel alright but the chest ammo pouches are loose and the gun holding hand peg hole is way to small to plug onto the wrist.

I got a bootleg Dragon Ball z figuarts Vegito figure that was shaped perfectly like the real ones and came with the right accessories, but fell completely apart when I took it out of the box. After putting it together, it was super wobbly and loose to where no part could stay in any pose at all and it looked like a little kid painted it. Also fell apart again when I laid it down.

Then, I got a fake Revoltech Metal Gear Venom Snake figure that looked spot on, even down to the minor details like logos on his shoulders, but the joints were looser than they should be and his beard was painted on above the spot where it should have been

Just two examples, but basically either they're completely terrible or pretty decent with a minor flaw or two.

Nearly every recent NECA figure has had figures stolen off factory lines, I think it started with their Dante and Bat Gremlin, then nearly every recent figure since has been pilvered and sold on. Currently eyeing the Ash vs The Evil Dead ones.

There are some actual NECA bootlegs though, namely their T2 figures, Shaun of the Dead's Ed has had its mold stolen and was never officially released and some early aliens and predator figures.

My cousin got the huge red queen alien, idk if it's neca or not but the leg fell off as soon as he took it out of the box. He fixed it but the head fell off and landed in the floor breaking the jaw from the rest of the skull. Paid $28 I believe

the 1/6 scale stuff is very hit and miss. unpainted accessories, outfits too big for the doll.....but if you're handy, these are quick fixes.

the 6 inch stuff has fused joints and plastic so flimsy it makes the stuff they make newer marvel legends out of look resilient
