Cars come in the usual single sizes and commemorative packaging (Nismo or classic TV shows), but I stick to the single size and keep them in the Auto World 6-car acrylic cases (perfect fit). They are true to scale too, so larger vehicles and buses should compliment nicely.
You're right on the rubber tires, and while the bases are plastic, I feel it doesn't detract from the cars at all. I'd post pictures, but I'm at work so have this video:
