Say I wanted to make a music video with toys, what kind of leI gal rights would I have to be concerned with?
I'm talking Pose Skeleton and mythic legions, generic looking toys etc.

Parodies usually involve getting the IP owner's' permission and telling them how much you plan to use their IP in your movie/show/etc. From there it can vary in royalties and such with conditions.

For example, Mel Brooks was able to get George Lucas's permission to parody Star Wars mostly in concepts with few actual names used, but only under the condition that Brooks made NO toys of the characters because Lucas feared they'd resemble the Star Wars action figures too much and would take away from sales (or something to that degree). That's why to this day there has still been no Spaceballs action figures save customs and of course the actual statues/dolls Dark Helmet plays with in the movie. Not a typical case, but an example of terms that can be set forth by the IP owners to allow a parody.

Also the only company I know of that's dick enough to care is Disney.

They once went after a daycare that painted Mickey and shit on the wall.

But they backed off after a lot of backlash

Because lawyers are pretty useless. They give you a roundabout answer and can't put you in touch with IP owners. Difference between asking a lawyer and asking a message board is basically nothing but a few hundred dollars.

OP it doesn't matter how generic you think it looks. As long as someone manufactured it as an original design they own the copyright. (Not counting some old shit that has since become public domain)

If you're doing it as a free project, you'll likely fly under the radar, but if you use the video to make money or promote something that makes you money, you're opening yourself up to legal claims.

The big question is if they are willing to spend money to drag you to court. Dealing with legal bs will drain your wallet even if you might have a case.

Best and safest is to do some custom shit to a base figure. eg, Spending some cash on getting a new sculpted / 3D head printed will save you thousands in possible legal fees later.

Toy Fair had a running comic strip with posed action figures. I doubt the paid licensing fees, but their relationship with the toy companies was unique.
