I mean, do you really have to ask OP? There were action figures made, but nothing like today's figuarts and figmas. Why haven't modern companies picked up the license? Well, there is nothing new in the pipeline to promote, so any marketing would be based off nostalgia alone.
It will never happen.

The Matrix will probably be remade or get a prequel/sequel in like 10-15 years, so you'll get figures then. You can always count on Hollywood to resurrect anything that made a dollar. But until then it's a pretty dead property. At best you'd get a staction company interested in picking up relatively cheap well known licenses, like the guys that are doing those limited articulation The Thing figures.

Seriously? Man, tough times for Hollywood if that one seems like a good idea to them. They'll probably make it so that everyone trapped within the Matrix is straight, and when you "wake up" into the real world you're a biracial pansexual trans otherkin or some shit.

The Matrix is already in the nostalgia market range, it is a 90s movie after all. So it wouldn't surprise me to see figures off the first movie in the next few years.

How much of a ripoff was it? WB bullied the producers claiming "durr your movie's title is too close to our box office flop Mad City, give us access to sets and costumes or we'll sue". There are scenes in Matrix where they not only used the same sets, but copied camera angles and shots.

...you don't remember Mad City at all, do you? No one does, not even the 2 a-list actors who were in it. Just more corporate Hollywood bullshit to bully the little guy.

I always thought Matrix, in terms of concept, visual, and action, was just a live action Ghost in The Shell without having to buy the license. Plus all those 80's 90's anime westerners loves. When people had their minds blown away at the time, I just thought hey this is anime in live action form. It escalated to DBZ level towards the end too.

Anyways, who wants action figures of bunch of dudes and one or two ladies all in black simple clothing and sunglasses?

Todd McFarland got his sticky fingers on the rights and it was just at the beginning of his "people don't want articulation, people want plastic statues" phase.

There where some good toys of the Sentinel by Hot Toys.

I collected all the McFarlane Matrix figures. The 2 Twins from Reloaded were short packed and hard to find. They were going for silly prices on eBay at the time, so I just held off. I eventually got lucky and found them in a CHIPS store (a now out of business vidya shop in the UK), they cost me £17 each, which was kinda pricey, but the need to finish off the series was strong.

Not exactly figures, but Kotobukiya sold a Matrix line, which I also bought. Their sculpts are pretty solid imo, Morpheus, Smith and Trinity been the best of the bunch. But the 2 Neos are nice aswel.
