Ok /lg/ I REALLY need your help. I just got an offer to trade my used (but complete) Sandcrawler 75059 for a Silent Mary NEW Sealed 71042. What should I do. I dont like star wars sets any more. And they will probably make another (better) sandcrawler in the future. Please give me your opinion. Is this a good move? I think the silent mary will go up in value right?

Scored the greatest Lego deal I'll probably ever see.

Futuron Monorail with the box but no instructions. Missing like one piece. Bit of discoloration here and there.

I've wanted one of the monorail sets since I was a kid. It's pretty cool to have one after all this time. The way they move is so cool.

But that's not what makes it so great...

It's pretty good, but like on top of one of the cars I've got some yellow pieces here and there. I should probably try to whiten them up a bit sometime.

The tracks have some odd discoloration going on as well. Not like I'm complaining though, for a set from 87 it held up pretty well.

Funny thing is, the only thing on it that doesnt work is the side....thingies. The "legs" on it. They wont go up or down. Thing drives fine, crane goes up and down, cable goes up and down, but the legs dont do shit.

Im actually pretty proud of myself all be told. Alcohol didnt hinder the build much.

Really? only $300? Last I checked they were like $500 all the way to one or two sealed ones for a couple grand (one of them fucking GRADED. I cringe at that, and if I was rich id love nothing more than to buy it and destroy the grading case its in, open the fuck out of it and build it live on twitch, just to make the fuck that got it graded twitch and squirm).

My old collection was something like six or seven of those big ass bins that always go on sale during the holidays in places like walmart, those big 20 gal tupperware deals. OG space, OG town and city, OG pirates and castle, I had it all. Only monorail I DIDNT have was the airport one. Last I remember the shit was stored in our old condo, which suffered a one two punch of first a massive break in where over 20K worth of guitars, musical equipment and finally sports memorabilia and trading cards got stolen by a woman who I had thought was my best friend and the wannabe neo nazi that she got shacked up with, then like two weeks later a pipe burst and we had a massive weekend long flood. During the clean up, a lot of stuff that wasnt even remotely damaged got moved into storage. Cue a couple years later, I get out of my dark age, and decide I want to dig out and catalogue all that treasure. Ask my dad.....

ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, bitch is, he knew and knows what they are worth. He would have had to sign on for them being thrown out. He used to be much smarter about shit like that (thus the massive guitar collection. Good chunk of it was investment grade shit.) but in recent years hes gotten strange. Look at it this way, he went out and bought an AR15 thats all tacticooled out, and he has never fired it once, never even put a round in the magazine. I dont think he would know how to use it if he ever needed to.

Lego has to work with reality so they can't use discontinued colors (one of which got discontinued because of being extremely brittle) and they can't put 1x1 pyramid slopes on technic pins with one stud so the things constantly spin and flop around. honestly, I think we all needed a reboot of the OT in a way, and VII was all that, hopefully VIII and IX divert grandly from the same plot and gives us some new interesting story and narrative

When I rewatched the whole series not too long ago, I discovered to my shock that I enjoyed VII more than the rest of them. The OT in particular aged much worse than I expected. That's just my take, though. They all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Legs look fine. Those are Mixel joints you used, which are one of the best connections you can get at that scale.

Not much potential for inward knee articulation as you have it built, though, and the lack of ankle articulation might be an issue with posing.

That part doesn't have a double-sided counterpart, though it does have a shorter variant.

You can either search for the name of the specific part (plate 1x3/brick 1x4/roof tile 1x2/connector peg/plate 1x2 ball cup, which is the Mixel cup/ etc.) or search by part number. I'd also recommend using LDD Extended. It adds extra pieces and removes some duplicate blocks so there is less clutter. You can change it when you launch the program or by going to view/themes.

I have had little success with part number for some reason. I kind of wish I knew more technical terms for the parts. Not sure what to say about the part numbers. Maybe they differ from LDD to physical but I don't see why that would be the case, that wouldn't make any sense. To be honest, I don't know any of the part names or numbers by heart. I just expand which ever menu I think the piece would be under and sift through until I find what I'm looking for. It may not be efficient but I usually end up seeing a part that gives me an idea of something else to build or add to the MOC.

If I remember correctly, Shoggoths are huge and and formless blobs that are able to "sprout" appendages as needed. A bunch of random bionicle parts together in a ball might do it. ;)

You get the gist, design is universal, each of those can be abstracted to their general that can help dictate a project, regardless of it being interior design, architecture, computer software or making a toy. The latter is one that generally falls under the question one can ask of "What value does this give to the user?". And ya, for toys, you usual start with a key mechanic in mind as the main "gimmick" then build on that mechanic to emphasize it as much as possible.

I believe best answers to design questions are ones that combine the form with function such that a design choice so happens to be the most elegant as well as visually appealing at its most basic.

More in specifics to Lego? I don't feel comfortable trying to formulate a list since I am not experienced enough to convey it with any type of authority. I need more time hands-on to allow the practicalities to emerge from working with it, especially with my dated knowledge.

In talking about this to a fellow I made friends with at a meetup, he recommended this website and guy as good example of elegant design (particularly in TECHNIC?):

On the contrary, I would like to see a Pirate theme with the same kind of focus that Ninjago, Chima and Nexo Knights has/had. By that I mean fantasy-inspired with lots of sea creatures like krakens/serpents as well as maybe undead pirates and the navy. Kinda like POTC but it could be a more fictional/fantasy setting. What you could do is check brickset by year and theme. https://brickset.com/sets/year-2017/theme-City will get you the 2017 City sets, then go backwards by year until you find something that looks good, then see how much it would cost on bricklink or amazon or whatever.

The instruction creator is very precise, i only use it for that, although the last time i touched it was a couple of years ago so i basically forgot how to use it.
If i'm not mistaken it should allow you to import LDD models (or there's a little program for converting the format i think).
It takes a little while to learn but it's good. I think i learned it via youtube tutorials and just playing around with it

also, stud.io came out in the meantime, i haven't really used it so i don't know if it also has an instructions feature

While i also like the practical/efficient and clever design part of building, my work is littered with an psychological, emotional and pretty nonsensical layer. I'd argue that without that I wouldn't even be into Lego or other design oriented practices in the first place. Even the fact that you build one way or another means you impose personal preferences of certain techniques and attributes over others, usually in a sliding scale of factors that can eventually be brought back to personal whims that make little sense to compete over.

It's a toy, it's nostalgic, design a perfect combiner, build a world, build a character AND his waifu, build a feeling, build whatever you like. Recently had a talk with a friend who admitted he grew up in a place where he was always pushed to perform and in competition. He has trouble to just like things, or maybe to allow himself to like things. I spoke (albeit very vaguely) about some things of what i wanted to paint/draw, and eventually had a (drunk) conversation about what elegant meant to us.
He kept insisting that elegance was in some way or form connected to power (in the structural stability and political sense) wich was baffling to me. Not the definition we were incoherently circling around, but the fact that he managed to involve competition, conflict and having to prove yourself in an objective and level playingfield in something that started out as just a conversation about "this is shit that makes me happy or is important to me, wether it's considered retarded by others or not".

Not mathematical, for me anyway either, but I fixate on the narrative elementl; I believe design can all be spun together into one cohesive package, a pointed expression, often enough of ones self. Your paragraphs thereafter seem to understand this sentiment.

Yesyes, especially to the first two. The aforementioned layer is where the creator can distinguish themselves and make it apparent that a given project CERTAINLY came from a given user.

Again mostly agree, with the last part being that i am willing to forgo a preference in order to bring about a practicality that is the baseline for most others that contribute to the medium. Its all about the challenge of expressing yourself within the constraints, either they be self made or mandated.

I play, in its many forms, to create stories. i have been making stories for myself for a long time. A goal that arises from that is to create things (and thus their stories) to engage others. Thus my desire to create with an audience's interests in mind rather than entirely my own.

I can empathize deeply with your friend. I had the great fortune of being able to "break through" to being able to realize my interests for myself, like Lego, among many other things, regardless of the stigma it may hold in a given community. Nevertheless, I know I like it more when I am able to enjoy WITH somebody alongside.

Having been in such the environment as your friend, I know where your friend derived his definition and once again empathize, particularly with establishing "proving your self", while I do not hold the same definition I am similar in being goal oriented, feel pressure towards realizing it in any activity I take part in. it comes from a place where those aspects you obsess over were often enough not granted to you a lot. You make apparent that you understand that we each have our own definition.

To pare it down, your friend say it about power, competition, conflict and having to prove yourself, I find myself trying to making it about acknowledgement, synergy, collaboration or listening. You can likely guess what other general thread I have started to visit frequently on here....

I usually look to see if they have “filler” bricks (usually bricks that are beat up as shit but work fine as unseen supports), I always need more of those.
That or I just look for parts for colors I’m into at the moment, baseplates (also could always use more if they’re a good price), or I go through basic block categories and look at the cheapest first. Mainly I stock up on generic pieces

I do this for most of my small bricklink orders since I feel bad making them do all the work of sending it out for only a couple of bucks.

The little driftcar thing i'm making was making me so mad, i removed the one printed piece that was almost the entire reason to build it and changed it out with whatever. Now i actually kinda like it again!
Still need to bricklink those 2 hella expensive darkbluish gray doors and a smooth 6 x 6 tile. Why do i always do this, fuck.

Probably they will but probably they will look like shit.

That's why I designed my own though I have to check if the stability holds up with 2x2 slopes swapped for 1x2 slopes with cutouts. And it articulates enough to look like it can walk but there isn't much give.
Trade Federation variant is even worse because the color looks like every earth-tone except Legos standard brown or dark tan.

If you want an easier way, I find the 2007 Vulture Droid with Naboo Starfighter is the best official one.

I have tried picking up pieces I wanted on Bricklink but the fucking sellers always have minimum purchase limits and just don't seem to have much more of what I'm after. They should add an option, something like "Shopping List." Let you create a viewable list of parts you are after, colors they should be, and amounts you want. Sellers could come to you if they have everything on your list. Just a rough idea I have but it has to be better then how things are now.

Will TLG ever do new Prequel sets? Right now they do more OT and ST sets with some PT/Clone Wars.

Anyway,here are Jurassic World descriptions:
Earlier today, LEGO fansite Bouw Steentjes shared the first details and descriptions of some of the upcoming Fallen Kingdom sets. They based their descriptions off of alleged images, but did not post the pictures themselves – as such, an appropriate level of skepticism should be applied, but it does align with what we’re hearing.

We previously reported there would be at least 10 sets, and now have descriptions for four of them from the main line – as of now no additional information is available about the DUPLO or Junior sets. As the original post was in Dutch, Twitter user Arjan Bos was nice enough to provide a translation:

LEGO Set # 75926:

A set containing a blue-grey 4×4 vehicle with a Pteranodon. There is one minifig in the set.
Priced 24.99 EUR
LEGO Set # 75927:

Looks like the Jurassic World Raptor escape. The difference is that the set looks more like a residence instead of a cage. The walls are high and there’s some kind of stage on which a minifig can stand. Looks like it only contains one raptor and two minifigs in the set.
Priced 39.99 EUR
LEGO Set # 75928:

A set with a helicopter, which, from what we can take from the picture, can capture a dinosaur from the air. The dino most likely being a raptor. Also a small vehice is included, probably a quad. Number of minifigs unknown.
Priced 59.99 EUR
LEGO Set # 75929:

This is a more expensive set, containing a big transport truck, like seen in 75917 Raptor Rampage, a gyrosphere, a tower with grapple hook and a T-Rex. The number of minifigs is uncertain, but it looks to be 4.
Priced 79.99 EUR

Bought it for GR, too. I think the size of the bike was mostly parts padding. I'd also be interested in smaller bike builds. when I had him on a bike I just used the a black crotch rocket with as many flame pieces as I could get on it.

Do you have a specific reference you’re working off of?
Look up medieval carriages and such to get a better idea of their shaping, good reference is key to good design.
Right now it’s a bit too top heavy and square. The floor should also be thicker since it needs to hold the whole thing together structurally and visually. Also it’s a kind of unseen detail, but the axels between the wheels should be (or at least look like) one solid piece.
It’s a bit cheesy to say, but you really need to understand how something is made before you can replicate it, even in something as simple as Lego

Besides what the other anons said, you might look into adding a bit of greebling to the sides (either the 1x2 bricks with grooves on both sides or a SNOT brick of some kind). I would also replace the brown wheels with the gunmetal gray ones like these.

I agree that the walls do look out of place, mainly due to how smooth they are. I'll mess around with the 1x2 bricks with grooves on, and see how it turns out.

I made my own Mysterio with a Scorpion torso and Sandy helmet.

It is fucked up how there's only one set where you can get an updated version of episode 3 anakin (3 if you include pilot anakin and full evil anakin).
I like how the one with a normal face also has a reversible sith face, in fact, I have that one and it's very nice, but I want one that's the same exact design but with a normal face and a angry, non-sith face. Would be cool to get again.

Thanks! It's actually lavender and a scooter, not a trike. The sides are connected to the center with a mirrored pair of Mixel joints, and the center is connected by a 1x2 plate with bar that connects to the clip on the underside of the scooter that's used as a kickstand. The front engine is connected with a bar plate and a 1x1 clip stuck on the headlight of the scooter. Thrusters are on their own Mixel joints connected to the side pieces.

Bars and hooks are basically all you need to get started making fun spacebikes. This blue angelfish is basically just a big engine with a trike clipped to the edge.

They're things aimed at the majority (which by no means they're innovative or relevant in any way), which causes them to spread fucking everywhere, and after you've seen the same shit in so many places it becomes fucking cancer. You're right, but there are video games that by copying previous games, successful in their niche market, they manage to be good in this day and age, mostly because they serve as successors, but also because of their own merit (for example, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. The gameplay is a direct copy from Commandos, but it's enhanced by merely modernising the UI and graphics, besides providing a much more enthralling plot). Other than that and 4x, I haven't played many video games since the early 00s.
