Yeah, he's a really retro character so it's kind of hard to bring him back 50 years later, but I remember watching the 2003 anime reboot on TV as a kid, so Astro Boy is just pure nostalgia for me (and for many Japanese grown-ups too).
Will definitely pre-order the figure.

Gotta love the shiny finish too, looks like die-cast metal. I've heard that Mafex figures can be pretty shoddy in the QC department but the details on the figure are somewhat simple so I doubt they'd fudge up.

I wish I had something unique to say, but I don't. This looks like a great (as well as overdue) figure, but I'd much prefer it to be in scale with my other imports.

I'll most likely get it either way, but as a scale autist I can't help but be a bit disappointed.

I do agree with everyone saying that it would've been better if he was smaller to fit with other ~1:12 scale figures, actually a good comparison is the Future Boy Conan figma (pic related).
However, he'd be literally so small (just barely over 4 inches tall). I'd prefer having a bigger one to become more of a display centerpiece.

Never watched any of it (Other than the US movie which doesn't count) until Atom the Begining this year, which does a great job of touching on issues of AI (Favourite part is where one robot that's been gaining sentience goes to take out the trash and sees an older body of his just thrown there)

Ended up watching the 2003 series because of it and it's so amazingly directed

Try the manga PLUTO too. You wouldn't know it with some foreknowledge or research but it is an Astro Boy manga, focusing on a specific episode and another character from the series. But it deals with the social issues of that universe pretty well.

It's definitely not an Astro Boy manga. It's based on an Astro Boy arc but it completely rewrites it with Astro being a very secondary character.

Well yeah, I mean it's the "same universe" just as Atom the Beginning and Young Black Jack are to Atom and BJ, I guess it's different in the sense that it's rehashing the same story in a different way with a different main character. I don't know what the correct term for it would be. With no involvement of the actual author and all.

That's my main beef about Mafex...they have amazing and accurate sculpts (their AoU Iron Man is pretty much like a mini Hot Toys in terms of sculpt), but they're made really bigger than most 6" figures. Kind of regretting buying Mafex Homecoming Spidey because of this, since I forgot that he will tower over my MLs at this point.

I don't mind it too much but with marvel characters people like posing them with other characters so that's more understandable.

For me this figure is a dream come true, seeing a astro boy figure that has so much actual love and care put into it has been something I wanted for years. Before your best options were either the hot toys one which is stupid expensive and based on the shitty American cgi movie or the medicom ones which, while not absolutely terrible, show their age. Though the medicom varient ones are still cool though, the 60's anime varient is pretty damn cool in its own right.
