Never gave a shit what others thought, was a spoilt brat who got what I wanted as a kid, grew up, got a NEAR fulltime job in the most basic of retail jobs, enough to get by, I get what I want, I have little in terms of bills.

Mother thinks what I have is cool despite my room being a hoarders mess and lack of a gf (went on a date once and while the girl had no issues with what I collect I wasn't into her) while the old man bitches about growing up.

Really I think he's just pissed he can't bring any foreign girls over to the house now he split from my mother because I'm living here because of the agreement with my mother, the bitching if anything just prevents me from blowing my whole paycheck some weeks (not that I can't buy a house of my own with my savings right now).

Those who insulted me were either smokers or alcoholics and have no money themselves, everyone else is just impressed by what I collect, the size, or the fact I have more money than them despite working in the bottom of retail

That's what I most often hear from people who criticize collectors, and god if it doesn't piss me off as much as it creeps me out.

First of all, I've always fucking hated that use of the word, "useful". Like humans are only supposed to live in a way that *contributes something to the world*, and anything else is worthy of ostracism.

Second of all, the people who say things like that make it sound as if they have this Spartan lifestyle, but they're house has shit like pictures on walls and flowers and rugs and furniture with aesthetics they specifically chose, and, sure, you could argue that it serves the purpose of, "making the house look nicer", but who does that serve? Themselves? Because being in a house that looks the way they like makes them happy?
Well, look at that; that's not very ""practical"" is it?

...That got long as shit. Point being, you're not really, truly all that different from everybody else, folks. You just do what they do in a different way, and because others couldn't imagine themselves doing it, they make a beeline into thinking there must be something wrong with you.

Your mom is prob only saying this because she's worried that you don't have your life together and these toys aren't something she's use to and unaware of what type of things it could lead to. She aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol but not of the possible embarrassment of being a Chinese cartoon toy collector. She just wants you to be normal and successful, to fit into the mold of someone she can be proud of. It's her problem she not yours.

Also last night my mom asked "are you playing with lego?"
I said "no I'm organizing it."
She said "ah hijo, okay don't go to sleep too late"
Felt a little embarrassed because it was 1030 and I had lego all over my bed and my room was a mess.

This holy shit, people get so preoccupied with what they think you should be doing with your money but a lot of people don't even understand the real costs of their own hobbies (if they even have any). To play fucking golf you need to spend hundreds of dollars on a set of clubs and then pay $40-60 every time you want to go out and play the course. Shit adds up.

Tangentially related but I used to play Warmachine with some co-workers of mine and we would talk about it pretty regularly at work. One of our co-workers one day asked us during a conversation if we were talking about "that lego game" and now Warmachine and other tabletop miniatures games are referred to as "legos" by our group

This. If you have stoner/smoker friends, a figure every month pales in comparison to the amount people blow on weed. Mine even think most of the stuff I get is cool, but they say they couldn't afford a $60 figure. But they'll smoke a pack a day and not even think about it.

Fuckin this. My brother probably buys a 50 bag every week or two, plus tobacco. Whenever I feel guilty splashing out on a new figma once in a while, I remind myself of that. And hey, at least I can resell the figma and it's not turning my insides to shit.

My mom likes my wasteful hobby. I have a lot of figmas and she has even taken her time to look into what I like, of course I do the same for her. I'm really lucky she has always had an open mind to everything. The only insulting thing I've dealt with was an ex who nearly lost and wrecked my figures on multiple occasions.
