That armor has no relevance or importance whatsoever after the first arc, it's a design that the author made before he even thought about how the other eleven matching gold cloths should look, and he just decided to change it and give a rushed excuse to explain why it looked totally different at first. In the anime was even worse, the thing just changed it's design from one episode to the next without any explanation.
For a Saint Seiya collector, that thing is one of those you buy for shits and giggles. Not because of his importance in a show you like, but because it's a weird thing with a somewhat unusual backstory.
