So, what do you think about this set, /toy/? Is it any good? The builds are interesting and the minifigs appear to be on point.

The only things I've heard about it are that the candidate selection was a little suspect but I suppose it's a bit subjective how large a contribution one actually has versus another. I think someone suggested that they include one of the astronauts on the Discovery mission but I'm not sure that including someone to honor their death is acceptable instead of including someone to honor their work.

Why does this need to be a thing? Has Lego made sets about NASA that (only) included men? Far as I know they've always been models of space ships or moon buggies and stuff like that. Why do women suddenly need recognition with their own set? Seems kinda weird to me.

Otherwise the set is just boring to me. It'd be boring with male scientists too. I'm sure they all did great stuff but it doesn't exactly make for an exciting set.

I honestly think that it is one of the better sets out of the review session it was part of. Pic related.

Lego wasn't really in the mood to do buildings for Ideas sets yet, I think. And licensing always comes with added costs (but NASA doesn't charge LEGO for putting their logo on the box)

There also comes a lot of factors like time to get 10k supporters, variety of demographics, etc. I'm sure this got posted on tech/science/nerd blogs and thousands of tumblrinas supported it just to put it on their desk at work.

Nahh, it's ass. There's way better sets in that line-up. I understand Lego thinking some are too big, too risky, or too much hassle in terms of licensing, but at that point just be straight with us and turn them all down.

A few things really. For one, NASA is free licensing for Lego. Two, it's part of a growing campaign to honor women's accomplishments in STEM throughout history because many of them had the credit stolen or accomplishments overshadowed by their male colleagues. Three, there's another campaign to get more girls interested in STEM, which are predominantly male fields. Point three is also part of a larger campaign of eliminating the gendering of children's toys.

Seconding that, actually. The only two mildly interesting things in there, besides the Voltron that was also approved, would be Eagle 5 and the Hadron collider and I can see the practical difficulty into making sets of both, one being a film with mildly adult humor that satirized one of their main brands and the other just being a fuckhuge thing that would probably work better as a sole set of the Compact Muon Solenoid rather than a disproportionate midi-scale replica. Many of those other sets are also incredibly generic things that will probably end up with non-Ideas equivalents regardless, I very much doubt we'll never get a UCS Landspeeder or another Lamborghini or yet another Lego City modular construction set in the near future.

The previous NASA sets didn't even have any "gendering" in them. They were just models of space stuff. If you're interested in space stuff you buy the thing. Done.

This "campaign" actually does the opposite. Apparently women and girls need to be told all the time that they can do a thing, and that other women and girls are already doing said thing, because otherwise they won't attempt it.

I think women are totally capable of doing stuff at NASA and they don't need Lego sets to tell them they can do it. This only adds to the idea that women are incapable of having real dreams and aspirations.

Speaking as someone who's also in a mildly STEM field (graduating for analytic phil, will probably master in neuroscience), I can unfortunately corroborate this. My guess is that most people in this thread are not necessarily being arrogant by intention, they just don't have too much direct personal contact with women trying to make a living in academia to actually see how much of a fucked up judgmental disadvantage they're given by some professors. It really made me sick when a good friend of mine produced an absolutely fantastic essay but still ended up a few values below mine after having refused creepy advances from the lecturer.

He actually did get a disciplinary procedure against him and was discretely put out of lecturing, but it was only by the virtue of having other female students who also had their testimonies with similar cases. Though, assume this was instead an isolated example where my friend either only had her own testimonial or, even worse and unfortunately not unseen in masters and doctorates, that there were more people who could corroborate her case but refused to provide a statement since their jobs were entirely dependent from said professor and knew speaking out against him would basically be academic suicide - e.g., essentially what happened with John Searle from UCLA earlier this year. How likely do you think it would have been for my friend to get her justice if that was the case? Do you really think the university would believe the sole testimony of a lone student against a prestiged professor? How can you expect the system to punish this sort of behavior when victims are put in positions where they can't speak out in the first place?

The women of NASA set shouldn't have been picked though, it's pretty clear based on that pic that the creator didn't put any effort into it. It's just a lazy obvious attempt at rallying the progressive crowd to win and build-wise it's by far the shittiest entry out of that round. They shouldn't have been rewarded by Lego.

As somebody else in the thread said, just because they picked this one, doesn't mean they would have picked something else if they didn't pick this. If you look at the other entries, they're one of three things:
a) an impossible license, or one that lego already drowns in
b) not well known enough as a license to sell well
c) impossibly large, detailed, expensive builds, or just not a great concept for a set in the first place.

They key word here is "interested". Interest is largely affected by cultural expectations and exposure, not by anything inherent to the person. That's what makes it STEM different from phisical labor jobs which will naturally benefit more from male labor because of simple phisical strenght.

I'm not saying they should have. It was a shit round anyway, they shouldn't have picked anything. Maybe just say they were still considering one or two projects then drop them at the next round like they have in the past.
I get why they picked this though, it gives them brownie points but imo it sends a bad message to the ppl on their site who actually put some time and effort into their projects. It just gives the impression that anybody with a half-assed concept will get through as long as they have a progressive theme.

They've had plenty of opportunities, and have yet to select something that would directly qualify as one of their Creative Export Modular buildings. It would also probably qualify as a City Construction set. They don't want projects that overlap their own themes.
This also came before they knew how well Ideas building sets would sell. I feel like lego has a lot of internal policies that relate specifically to Ideas, and need a lot of extra corporate approval based on the fact that it's fan-made set concepts.
