The year is 2009. You've just gotten your RotF Leader Optimus and have decided that it's basically the best thing ever and the peak of toy engineering. You check TFW and see a couple of figures from these new "Global Alliance" and "Hunt for the Decepticons" subseries have been announced and whoa, who could have guessed, they look even more impressive than the mainline stuff for RotF! You think of the bright future in store for Transformers, and wonder how all the advances in designs and materials could even possibly hope to surpass figures like this.

Suddenly a time traveler appears before you, and shows you his Optimus Prime from the far off future of 2017. You look at it in confusion, assuming it's either some fast transformation figure for kids or an upscaled knockoff or something, until he tells you this is what Leader Class toys are like in his time. He also claims it's more expensive than your RotF Optimus.

Eh, the land vehicle is pretty much just the flight mode with the arms stretched in, so my guess is that it might be doable even if just as a fan-mode if Hasbro decides to omit it. Good to know we're not getting an entirely half-assed figure either way.

The ground mde doesn't get enough love, its actually a really cool, tightly put together little vehicle if you do it right. Always loved how the fists would come together and the overall angled profile. The 3P version fucked it up by having the wheels come between the fists instead.

God, I do want to believe there really is a cycle and that we just so happen to be going through a bit of a temporary downgrade, but the switch from RiD to Armada was mostly provoked by a change of aesthetic rather than actual engineering or budget constrains. Mind you, I'd also take Fire Convoy or the average Car Robot over the vast majority of Armada bricks any day, but the robot designs changed radically and the toys inevitably had to slowly adapt throughout the Unicron trilogy until they were the best we had ever seen with Cybertron. In comparison, TFs have been on a downwards spiral of mediocrity since 2014, one which is actually provoked by budgetary constraints and doesn't appear to be evolving in any direction or presenting itself with any any clear end in sight. It's just getting worse and worse for higher and higher prices.

Mp inferno mold is fine and so are the datsons and lambo's, its only mp megatron because tolerances and engineering wankfest that would have benefited from being straight plastic.

Even then not EVERYTHING needs to be painted on bakacade, just the main car shell, and the correct paint apps of course, as long as areas on the car don't mish match like on say TLK drift I'd be fine with that

Speaking as a fellow RiD apologist who's been looking for a Rail Racer for a while, I'll unfortunately have to agree with that other anon, those robots look like absolute dogshit. Mind you, the trains themselves are great (muh Shinkansen hard-on) and the combined robot does look incredibly dope, but it's really hard to deny that the individual team members are the weakest part of the set. I guess it's just not easy to make train transformers without them looking like hilariously thin stick figures?

The downward spiral really began in 2011 with DOTM and especially the main Primeline and FoC generations. they weren't bad toys, all things considered, but the budget cuts affected the size and paint compared to ROTF/ early generations/PRime FE. That said, those 2011 lines did have some improvements and quality even if they were smaller or had less parts. DOTM Bumblebee is a good example, not an impressive figure on the surface, but it streamlined and improved a lot of the engineering in the past 4years of bees up til then, even if it wasn't the most movie accurate.

Really its all lateral. I do think engineering and design has improved even if the budget constraints on the mainline don't really let them show it off. The real benefits or reaped by the MP line and 3P.There's a lot I see since CW that could've been improved with a higher budget, but are overall probably better designs than ever before, which is a shame. I feel like even in the "golden age" of 2009-2011, there was a lot of overthinking and overengineering that made figures feel like a bit of a mess.

Takara really does do a great job with the legs, the way they taper out. I just hate the squished looking torso.

I could go on newer leader class figures and even many mp's should take a note out of ROTF prime's design book (transformation, asthetics, features, and priced well) but that would be fucking pointless because BAY IS EVIL.

Fuck the movies, everyone has different taste, personally I liked only the first movie and the ROTF prime was basically my movie prime because I liked movie prime's initial design, his competition today consist of jetfire retools that don't do justice to their g1 origins nor their idw representations, a megatron that would be mistaken for a god damn legends class from its simplicity, skyshadow who's a parts former for NO GOD DAMN REASON other than a excuse to retool into his intended character (who himself is a hollow simplified update to the original) and POTP isn't doing leaders much favors either.

I agree, ROTF Demolishor was so awful it remains one of the worst TF designs ever made to me. seeing it for the first time practically offended me. Its such a heinous affront to aesthetics. I don't even mind the actual movie design that much, but the figure looks like an oversized minicon. The awful arms with the bigger part of the claw facing inward, the massive gaps in the top and bottom with the read dangling in between the wheels. Its jut an uncool, ugly design.

Ehhh, that's disagreeable, Blazemaster still has some charm and all versions of the twins were solid molds in their own right.

So, sure, there were some stinkers, but they were the result of experimenting with different designs and engineering ideas, which is acceptable by itself when countered by some of the most glorious movie toys we've ever had until today. Leader Prime, Voyager Megs, The Fallen, Sideswipe, Sideways, Longhaul, Mixmaster, almost every single Scout, almost every single Human Alliance, I mean, jesus christ, even fucking Wheelie had a great toy. And that's not even considering all the glorious stuff that came later with Global Alliance and Hunt for the Decepticons. I'm fine with a stinker every now and then if most of it is as glorious as RotF was.

The LT MPM bumblebee has more paint and better tolerances that both the hasbro and Takara versions and it's 50 bucks.

I really like the knight designs but 1) he didn't have a big part and no memorable lines and 2) none of his toys are that great, either in color or design. Whereas most of barricade's toys are pretty good and he has fun moments in the movies. And I think the idea of a bad cop bot is intrinsically appealing.

Look at those well defined iconic features.
Why is there no classics/g1 aesthetic Barricade yet? Hood chest, wheels at shoulders and wrists, door wings, he's got practically all the classic character design they need.

Almost all of the KO's so faor for MPM's are the 1:1 improved kind that fix hastak's fuck ups.

Wei Jang is doing a 1:1 super extra painted prime with reportedly fixed tabbing issues. Has Tak needs to quit cheaping out and driving the demand for KO's up.

I don't like the Headmasters the Takara version uses, or the fact that the chest thing got gutted. I'd grab it if they made Giga and Mega into POTP type Titanmasters, and added a third one that works as the head only.

This. I don't care at all about Overlord's old appearances, I like him in IDW and I think the Takara facesculpts are pretty much rubbish. Hasbros chest looks loads better and I can just add blue to his face if I want but the black really doesn't bother me.

The face sculpt itself is pretty much identical, it's just painted white instead of silver. Hasbro has an equally non-IDW face since it's not 90% lip like the actual IDW version.

This is not the same head. And the sculpted in chest things are lame. The other face looks better, but still not the same and still not as good. I recognize that hasbro's isn't exactly IDW, in fact I like it better than his comic fave.

The more annoying part is:

-Takara could have used the Hasbro faces
-Keep the chest gimmick, throw in 3 Headmasters, the extra one being a mini Overlord with a face, while the other 2 would have emblems
-Replace the gun with a more accurate one
-Replace the front of the chest (not the Windows) just to add the abdomen gun
-The new helmets good, keep that
