As for twice or thrice as much, for me that would be hyperbolic. Most of my purchases are weebshit, but the yen/euro exchange is quite favourable. I've won more than I've lost when it comes to the customs man, but it's all swings and roundabouts.
For Germans and suchlike though, customs really is a shit sandwich, though I still don't think it's to the degree that it's x2 or x3 what it's "meant" to cost. For my krautfreund, for example, it's the hassle of their customs moreso than the cost that bothers him with imports.
On the other hand, plenty of toys and things are just plain expensive, you're right, my wallet has palpitations whenever I see the cost of some of the marvel action figures, I'd swear they have doubled in price since I was a dumbshit kid and look worse, but maybe that's my inner grump talking.
