I've realized today that FansToys just doesn't do it for me. I just got in Sovereign, which was like the critic's darling this year, just fell flat to me. Just left with buyer's remorse. Their figures just seem so flat and dull to me, very boring.

Funny enough, one of the things that bugs me about Sovereign is the purple being to overt, where as it had more of a blue tint in the G1 cartoon. I've seen photo manipulations that look a lot better.

That's my main grip with them. I picked up chrome grassor on a whim and think he's fantastic but, I was already two in on FT dinos at the time and just decided to continue with them out of convenience. I think the main problem with GP is they waste time making the repaint of the figure their next priority instead of releasing a new one.

I don't think repaints actually waste much time, contrary to what people think redecos don't eat up some imaginary slots in a company's yearly release schedule. If anything, repaints are a planned effort to recuperate funds Transforming figures are probably some of the hardest figures to recoup budget on because unlike humanoid figures, you can't really repaint the figure over and over again. I don't think Giga is a big company, either.

Well, two things to consider are that the combaticons are coming out piecemeal, and they're dropping close enough to each other that they were probably all done at the same time. The two easy conclusions you can draw from this is that either the set thing didn't work sales wise before, or they thought it'd be too expensive and scare people off.

It's It's probably just as hard for them to judge when there are multiple factors like that. Bruticus is an easier sell than weird altmodes, but maybe they wanted to play it safe. The cynical part of me wants to say it lets them charge slightly more because they get to pack in extra cheap stuff like the arcee repaint to pad out the cost.

Got Utopia this week from Maketoys BF sale. Guy's got a real presence, some real heft to him, he'll definitely display well. Gotta say I'm not impressed with the shitty head sculpt though. Or the sections of the arms and legs that use the same piece as what's on the other side but flipped around so the right side has screw holes on the front and indented detailing but the left has fake screws and protruding detailing, that's some cheap sub-Hasbro at it's worst shit Maketoys, what the damn hell.

Eh, it's not great. On the other hand, IF's faces have always been very stylized, and his is fairly normal, I'm not complaining.

Also, as far as I can tell, all of his gold is actually painted on, which is really nice, but also leads to some tolerance problems with joints. I had to spend a good half hour scraping paint off the inside of the mushroom pegs on the shoulders. I'm assuming that wasn't a thing on the regular version.

I'd like it if companies did something a little bit more fun when it comes to combiners and add alternative members. Bruticus for example, after they complete the team add an alternative Blastoff, a Harrier like CW, use it as a preview for the next combiner Superion...when that one is done, add a helicopter which leads into Defensor and so on. Yes, that would require a universal connector system, but if you where to make combiners then you'd work that out beforehand. The only thing that comes to mind is like what MMC did with Feral Rex

The funny part of this is that I straight up think of the third party made up name for half the stuff I own. I started with beast wars as a kid and couldn't get into g1 after that, so when I look at a lot of stuff on my shelf, I go "oh yeah, that's hexatron, the jeep dude over there is gundog" etc. I own one and a half devastators, and I couldn't tell you the names of the actual constructicons if my life depended it.

The diaclone version? neat. Most people seem to just want the G1 or silver versions.

He's pretty good, just be careful of the chrome when closing his wings. You gotta lift up on them to keep them from rubbing on the chrome too hard, while also holding them steady and straight so they'll close together properly.

People say it's overpriced to get on its own because of the BAF Ghost Starscream torso, but it also comes with a compatible stand, Megatron pistol and coronation gear. If you think that's worth 40$ then go for it.

I have and enjoy Maketoys Visualizers (got from and still on sale here http://maketoys.jp/shop/products/visualizers/ ). Transformation can seem a bit strange in places, but it's just one of those things you get used to as you repeat it. The other big player would be Fans Toys' Spotter, but I don't have any personal experience with it. KFC also has a release, but also has quite a spotty track record on releases so I'm not certain how I would feel recommending someone to look at it.

PE guys are tiny, not MP-size. One thing I like about Visualizers is that MP-36 can hold the tiny Reflector they come packed with; which of course is just lucky coincidence and nothing that could have been planned.

Shoulders are fucked pretty much exactly how you'd expect, but they have great articulation otherwise. Sideswipe's shoulders are much worse, but I actually prefer him because of the fake ab-crunch. The altmodes also seem to be really gappy no matter what you do, though I guess I'd take that over something seamless that you have to nearly break to transform like brawl and swindle.

Also, sideswipe's transformation is smooth sailing, but sunstreaker's uses the classic Iron Factory Finger Killing Collapsing Leg Method, and and they're some of the tightest joints I've seen on one. They both roll alright, and I really do appreciate that they got different transformations.

Overall, I'd say they're great at the ~$50 I got them for. The $65 the usual suspects are charging might be pushing it a little much.

Something seems just a slight worrisome since this set was initially promoted as their "2.0" so I was hoping they'd avoid the leg collapsing issues. It depends on what you're looking for. If the rest of the combaticons are like the first two, mine are going to be combined 90% of the time. They're not bad, but definitely way more finicky that I'm usually cool with. I have't messed with them for long, but the lambos seem like they're the better standalone product, which honestly is about what you'd expect.

Originally they were just some dudes who did the whole thing as a hobby instead of a serious job. They just happened to blaze the trail that china picked up on. By the time they were deep in the thick of it, a bunch of other people were catching up and outpacing them. Add on kits were on the way out. By the time they got half way through their headmasters, Hasbro announced TR.

In general they've been kind of a mess since they started the dinobot/Dinoking track. The dinobots were stylized but subpar. The release schedule for Dinoking and the shell shitshow didn't help. M3 was cool but all over the place and unfun. There was no follow up with Smart Robin for the headmasters while Browning was 2 steps forward and 3 steps back. Maketoys sort of took over their style with Cross Dimensions amping it up a few notches. Trianix alpha had to compete with the actual diaclone reboot which came out of nowhere too. By this point everyone moved onto MP style figures. Their Fansprojectcore website never even got off the ground which was Ages 3 and up completely botching it.

They should have just stuck with the donutsteels and the improving the soleron gimmick with different types of little guys. Pharaoh Megatron that turns into a 4 legged sphinx with a month cannon and his sandspeeder waifu never ever.

I forgot to mention that I do have the full Combaticon set preordered with GCI (compared to buying them all separate it was a better deal), so it's just a matter of waiting on the arms and everything will ship out. Watching peaugh's review for Cannon Chariot had me glad to know that he's pretty smooth between his modes, compared to Brawl.

Steelcore is definitely a product of his time, but he's aged really well and is still one of my top 5 3P toys, probably top 5 toys in general. I'd love to have seen more like him, especially with more modern articulation.

See, I don't actually get you there, bridge watcher is probably the best example of that method actually working. There's definitely an order you have to do things in, but all the joints involved are buttery smooth, and you don't have to apply excessive force at any point. Stuff like brawl and the seekers honestly scare me a little every time I collapse/unfold them, particularly how you have to put a lot of perpendicular force onto the hip balljoint.

to add onto that, they did so while still having their own ideas that they wanted to run with no matter how long shit takes; like those derpy reshell things for classics op/magnus, which probably would have been seen in a much better light if they'd been released years ago, dumb though they are. instead they're making those things what, almost a decade late, and the "rockstar"-like status that might have helped back when there was basically nobody else 3p making stuff is long gone. it makes them look rather strange to do that stuff nowadays.

(semi-tangentially, those reshell things pile more weight onto the doorkibble bits on the arms, but don't add something for the panels to catch on to keep them in the right position. o-ver-sight.)

You shouldn't need much force on them honestly. Try working them out bit by bit instead. I had more problems with Shockwave's thigh swivels being a bit rough at first due to the paint.

Ocean decals look really nice. They look close to actual tampographs when you apply them correctly. I've actually got a few waterslides on my MP Wheeljack (left over from a lancia model kit I had), and they only look marginally nicer. Plus you really need to topcoat them, especially on bare plastic.

The thing about 3rd party is that they are small companies making super small batches of ip dodging figures. They have to make their money back somehow to justify using factories and laborers, and the factories expect a decent profit. They need to make what sells, and it's led to this situation where almost every release is an MP alike of a G1 character that's accurate to one specific screenshot of the cartoon. Hasbro has no excuse besides corporate greed despite also owning the Star Wars and Marvel Brands while being aware hat collectors are a growing portion of the market.

Perfect effect though is always overpriced. No way those Combiner limbs are $35+ burgers

The new addition for me there is Wrestle, so each bot is a different company and mold -- helps me in thinking that I'm not REALLY double-dipping by having all three. I did think briefly about FT's Lupus which TFS was offering during BF for $100 (gotta try to have some sort of opposition to Cupola and Iron Will), but the big issues of the cockpit locking issues and no ankle tilt were enough to make me hesitate there. Really slow going today. Sideswipe seems pretty good so far. I like that they included two shoulder missile...Gun...Things. Whatever. With him. So you can put them on either or both sides of his shoulders. Joints are fine so far, haven't transformed any of the figures yet.

Simple enough transformation, did it without looking at the instructions. Fits together nicely! Looks good. Plenty of room on the hood to put a nice, big Autobot symbol too, which is nice. Some of the IF figures give you spots for where the emblems usually go on characters, but usually the reprolabels and shit are a tad too big or too small to fit. This time that is not an issue, which is good for me.

I never actually realized the pegs on the other seekers' guns are too short to be held until now.

They're mainly there because the "intended" transformation is to partsform the guns off the arms and onto the wings, but really it doesn't matter and you can just leave them on the arms and it looks the same.

I remember years ago when we were thrilled enough just to get a certain character made into a figure, now people are so fucking picky that they demand a figure be 100% accurate to one specific depiction, even though we already have many extremely nice versions of said character that are at least 80% similar.

Not really. I'd dig out my books and check, but I'm pretty sure they said Sideswipe's spark was failing because it took a direct hit, or suffered a power surge from the explosion. You can mutilate almost all of a Transformer, but fuck with the spark and they go down.

Review of Planet X Jupiter. The colors are a fucking disaster. Who thought it would be a good idea to go with neon green highlights? Or blue clear pieces for the wheels? Or white legs, which completely fucks up any cohesion in an already messy alt mode?

I'm reminded again why I hate the comics for having pushed up the idea of magnus as a bot in a suit. it makes faggots think it's fine to do this shit. I suspect if a 3p group did animated magnus for some reason they'd still try to make him a white optimus in a suit.

I am well aware of the G1 toy being such, faggot. the shows generally have not done that. WfC/FoC did not do that. if you're not making a toy that's supposed to be representing the geewun toy or comics, don't fucking do it, because what you're aping most likely does not. and shit; the masterpiece fig doesn't even do that.

fuck, even the comics don't do "white prime in armor" anymore, they got some other midget and made the entire 'proper' body of UM into armor for him because IDW wrote up UM, like that, being important enough for there to be good coming from having someone pretending to be him like that.

Pretty sure that's an homage to Minimus Ambus. No idea why because he's not part of the WfC/FoC games but that was most likely the logic there.

Was that ever actually confirmed by the devs? Because those transformations in game cheat pretty fucking hard so it seems entirely possible that they just skipped that step entirely in animation like the G1 cartoon did but it could have secretly still been there, especially when the in-game alt mode has a nearly identical cab to Prime. Not to mention, the bot mode is pretty damn close to the in-game model. The alt mode is noticeably different but largely just the back half. The front half is still pretty similar.

If I recall correctly, that was actually in the original design for MP Ultra Magnus until the figure switched designers and the new one decided "fuck it I hate fun"
