Overall feel pretty negative. Building went well but i'm having a hard time with lining up the water decals... mixed results. I think I lost patience. Hopefully I recover in painting.

Way to go Dragon. You have a 1/32 Bf-110E so scaling it down to 1/48 shouldn't have been a problem, but your 1/48 Bf-110E-2 kit can't be built as an E-2 because you included the normal short tail (which should have been included in your D kit, D-3 was an odd choice). It can't even be built as an E because it's missing the nose mods along with several other body mods. Looks like I'll have to make resin copies of some of the Eduard E parts.

There are aftermarket decals and dry transfers available. You'll have to search by individual subject. There are also painting masks/templates for the major markings available.

Are you using acrylic? I probably should have mentioned it's for acrylic/water based paints. If you're using oil based, you'll need to use something like mineral spirits. And plenty of ventilation.

I don't know if I'll start on the CyberHobby 1:48 Bf 110D-3 and Bf 110E-2 yet or not as I'll need to purchase parts and make resin copies of parts to build different variants (along with decals, masks, etc.)

My thoughts on the kits:

The CyberHobby 1:48 Bf 110D-3s are great kits and the best 1:48 Bf 110s on the market. However, they can only be built as the odd D-3 variant with the lengthened tail as the normal short tail is not included. CyberHobby put out a 1:48 Bf 110E-2, but it leaves a lot to be desired compared to the D-3s. The E-2 boxing includes the normal short tail, however, the E-2 variant had the same long tail as the D-3 so it cannot be built as an E-2. It also cannot be built as an E-1 out of the box. The nose is missing the air intake introduced on the E series and must be scratch built. The main wheels are incorrect for an E (excluding some early models) and will need to be replaced. The tail wheel included in the E-2 kit is grossly undersized and will have to be replaced. (It is around the correct size in the D-3 kit. Don't know why they didn't just copy it or include both the long and short tail sprues in the kit.) The kit can built out of box as a C or D (ignoring the undersized tail wheel.)

1. The CyberHobby C/D wheels are around the correct size. The Eduard wheels are much too thin.

2. The tail wheel included in the E-2 is undersized. The tail wheel in the Eduard kit is around the correct size as is the tail wheel in the D-3 kit shown on the top right.

3. The CyberHobby nose is missing the air intake found on E models. However, the CyberHobby nose has the correct odd shape for the gun hole second from the left.

4. On top is the lengthened tail (D-3/E-2.) On bottom is the normal short tail included only in the E-2 kit.

I don't dislike it but there's a lot of job to do to make it interesting and not a red brick. Most of the time people cover them in factory annotations and work hard on the base color with oils and enamels to enhance the modulation and break the monotony .
But it's kinda "just what everyone does" and I don't say it's wrong but we could come up with something more interesting perhaps. For example the new trumpeter e-100 TD features a half painted in camo scheme that could be an interesting idea or maybe a winter wash on top of primer gives a nice contrast I imagine. I've been thinking of doing that on my e100 flakturm when I get it, tricolor hull and red primer turret (like a factory test on a frontline hull that just kept going) and then a stripped whitewash, easy and eye candy but more importantly some variety.

The maus was kind of a impulse buy I picked up before takom had announced their maus but long after the old dragon one was OoP.I never had plans beyond building it so it’s been through a dozen different camo schemes I never completely liked. If I do anything with maus it will probably be it in a factory with Russian infantry walking past it with some slogan written on the hull or turret or something.

Do we have any information about factory markings like you suggested? I don’t doubt the germs had a marking system to insure correct construction but I can’t find anything that shows these markings.primarily asking out of curiosity and to make sure I put the right markings on if I do.

Maybe I'm confusing you with other maus build, but there was someone with a v1 maus and the turret version too.
Anyway here pic related, when people say factory markings in this case they refer to literal markings done at the factory during assembly. Made irl with white chalk it seems, you can do them with a sharp white pencil or good small brush control (or decals) and just put them near welds or areas where pieces are attached or holes made, anywhere you feel like and makes some sense really.

Those are the markings I was talking about. I’ve never seen them on later war tanks aside from jagdtigers which have very few markings on them.i don’t know if latter on in the war the markings got simpler or if it depends from factory to factory. I’m guessing larger numbers (36 and 663)are to number the chassis and the smaller ones can be more randomized. If I’m wrong about what the numbers represent please correct me.

I created the nose air intake using sheet brass. I'll clean up the nose when the CA dries. I also have the tail and tail wheel cleaned up and ready to be cast in resin.

They were somewhat rare as the tanks shouldn't leave the factory in such a sorry rushed state. I guess most markings got washed out or where erased while moving on the assembly line.
I assume too that the big ones are either the ref of the metal slabs from where the armor was cut off (the 36 on the side looks like it has been sprayed with a stencyl so it looks like its a fixed reference of something) while the big one in front is a hull ref in the factory done by hand like the smaller ones are just regular workshop/non-automated factory like ones. Like when modifications in tooling have to be made and they get scribbles and ref points everywhere those are just for working on but don't refer to the serial of the tooling itself so anything you can think of that would help "while building it irl" would work (from number of pieces installed/left to tightening torque for some bolts, just follow your aesthetic and common sense here).
Also if you're not reproducing a photography 1:1 (as close as humanly possible) of some vehicle, as long as you don't do something retarded, you can relax and just do what you feel it looks right. And you can always ask while working and take into consideration (or not) what people say, in the end you're building this for your personal enjoyment.
(I thought I had the whole step by step but only can find the last image but yout get the idea on how to blend and weather them)

I’m kind of thinking of a maus just about to get it’s base coat then the factory was evacuated. I read some factories washed off the markings before applying paint, but the time frame between washing markings to paintsing would be done is anyone’s guess. As far as painting something this massive i see one main solution and that is to just drive it to the painting area and possibly bringing the turret in separately. If the germs are in a hurry they may have simply drove the entire vehicle into the paint area markings and all. Now comes the problem of figureing what the painting area even looks like in one of these factories of a decided area even exist. I imagine a “maus factory “ would be very limited in space given the massive size of the vehicles. Sorry to drag you into this dumb little impulse build but if you know anything about how the base coat painting was handled in the factories (which probably vary from company to company factory to factory and probably vehicle type to vehicle type) it would be much appreciated. But I don’t expect you to do the research for me you’ve already done more then enough

Now it's too late here but tomorrow or past tomorrow I'll see what I have about German factories and if I have useful pics.
I can say now that subassemblies and other small components where supposed to arrive to the main assembly factory already primed in red oxide and late in the war in olivgrun but if that was really done due the circumstances is another story.
Something that big was probably painted just before leaving the line in some kind of spray room without much fancy stuff except the pipping, ventilation and spray equipment (it's a WWII late war tank not a maserati so no need for a fancy setup).

Looks great paint wise, but the black-red-gold flag in combination with the Balkenkreuz makes no sense. The post-45 Bundeswehr uses different crosses and the pre-45 german forces had the black-white-red flag.

Hey, newfag here. I put together this Aoshima Initial D AE86 a few days ago. Problem is, the black parts smudged black shit like a motherfucker on the white parts, and I also managed to get some glue on the surface of the car, mainly near the hood and the lights. I used Revell Contact glue (Contacta Professional is on the label). Any idea how I get these glue smudges off? I wanna try some nail polish remover, I figure acetone could do the trick, but I'm afraid it might damage the plastic itself.
Pls no bully, this is my first modell, and I had a lot of fun, I would like to avoid mistakes like this in the next build.

Plastic cement like Contacta Pro consists of a solvent that can dissolve the plastic you're gluing (polystyrene for injection moulded kits), and some dissolved plastic (more polystyrene). So unfortunately those smudges you see is a combination of the base plastic itself having gotten deformed and some extra plastic being chemically welded onto it. Any solvent that could dissolve the smudge will dissolve the plastic too (acetone will do this) since they're the same material, and you cna't pry it off either since it's all welded into a single piece. You'll have to sand it off, and possibly add some filler as well depending on how deep the damage is. On the plus side I guess you'll be able to sand off the black smudges as well while you're at it.

Painting over it will only work for extremely superficial damage, since otherwise the smudge will be thick enough to be clearly visible through a reasonably thin paint layer.

All types of plastic cement work on the chemical welding principle, with more or less dissolved plastic thrown in. So you have to be careful with all of them, they can all cause this kind of damage. The solvent will also happily devour most types paint, so be careful about that as well. That said, they're usually the best thing around when it comes to gluing plastic to plastic, which is why people use them anyway. Glue fingerprints etched into the surface of a kit is a staple of beginner work. (As a tangent, I'd recommend you to get some Tamiya Extra Thin or equivalent, a plastic cement that's basically just the solvent on its own. I keep some Contacta Pro around for when that'll work better, but Extra Thin is what I use the most.)

You could also use cyanoacrylate glue, aka superglue, and for anything but polystyrene (metal, resin, other odd plastics) you usually have to. Generally not as nice to work with though, and while you can sometimes simply pry loose glue that ended up where it shouldn't be you'll find yourself forced to sand off that as well form time to time if you get it where it shouldn't be.

I want to start building airplane kits and i need your advise for scale. I realize that there is 72, 48 and 32 as the most prominent scales, but i don't have the space for those since even 72 jets can be quite big.

So what would be my best option here? I've seen some 1:144 planes as well as 1:100. What would be a better choice in terms of kit variety as well as variety of companies doing these?

Just bought a mr hobby aqueous flat black and why the hell is it being washed out of the bottle?

Ah forgive me I meant it's like paint wash out of the bottle... it keeps on clumping to the edges of the plastic surface. It almost got the consistency of tamiya's panel line accent even though it's already mixed.

Since you've tried stirring it, could there be something about the surface you're painting, some mould release or other grease there maybe? Though otherwise it does rather sound like it has separated apart and you have mostly pigment-depleted thinner on the brush, that's largely what a wash (like the panel liner) is after all.

Progress is pretty slow on the Bf-108. Italeri acrylic paint is pretty fragile. Especially thinned with Tamiya lacquer thinner. But the finish is pretty smooth at least. Waiting a day before masking ant painting a new color. Hope I don't fuck it up

Italeri paints are not meant to be thinned with lacquer thinner. Bloody hell. Just use lacquer paints. Tamiya and Gunze can be thinned eith ladquer thinner, but the resulting finish is the same as if they are thinned with alcohol. Better to use actual lacquer paints.

If its plastic glue, you can't remove it. It literally welds the plastic together by slightly melting it.
If its super glue, you can deep freeze the model and the glue should become brittle and you should be able to break the parts apart and with a bit of luck nothing gets damaged.

What scale is that Tiger? An 1:72 revell kit is like 12 EUR, your best option is probably just to buy a new one and keep the old one to try new techniques or other things or maybe use some of its parts for conversions or use it as a whole thing for a diorama.

I didn't have anything about the maus assembly but searched a bit and found interesting pics and one build (wilder again I think) that takes one of the unfinished hulls and made it into a serviceable tank.
There's a lot of books about only the Maus it seems that cover the whole project with detail but you gotta pay and unless you care a lot about the Maus they have limited use. So, from wikipedia and what google books allowed me to read it seems that the Maus components were made by krupp (Essen) and assembled by them or Alkett, the main tests of the V1 and V2 where done at Böblingen so I assume they were painted there in camouflage, but they should have arrived in dunkelgelb from the factory. Sadly didn't find anywhere pics of the painting process but that makes me think that it was really an unremarkable process.
Interesting to see that a lot of hulls of the cancelled project ended in Meppen it seems (north of Essen and really close to Holland) while the two operative prototypes were ordered to defend the kummersdorf proving ground facilities.
As you can see there's several key areas where you can put your project even if it's not one of the V1 or V2 prototypes and go your way, you have the option of putting olivgrün parts too if you want along only red primer ones even if it didn't leave the factory to get more color options.

Thanks man. I don’t think I have any particular plan aside from maus in a factory but have plenty of usage for the info and the links.
may do some modifications to make it into a “production model” maus to give a little interest to it . Maybe just small modifications like a ladder on the side of the hull and turret for easyier acess by the crew (like a kv-2 turret) or a AA mount for the commander like on a tiger or panther something maus would be in desperate need of if it went into production. Anothet modification and something that stuck out to me is the lack of a MG port (some debate over if the holes in the turret sides where to mark where an MG would go) I doubt the germs would want to lose such a difficult to produce and expensive tank just from a infantry man rushing it with a molotov like with the ferdinands.maus seems to have a position for a co driver but what he would be doing without a dedicated periscope is beyond me perhaps a mg port was meant to be installed. This is assuming I even do any of this like I said before maus was an impulse buy without any real plan on what to do with it, but this is actually turning into something I’m really liking

Anyway the kit looks pretty intense. Definitely the most complex i have in my backlog right now. Never built an AFV before either. Though I really like the tank itself and am excited to build it

TOS-1 never built on T-90 chassis

Most TOS-1 or TOS-1A system use early style T-72 chassis, but modelcollect front glacis for early T-72 is hideous, so unless you want to fix alot that dont get T-72

Only azerbaijan/iraq uses TOS-1A on "T-90" (actually just T-72 with some T-90 features), Kontakt-5 hides most of the modelcollect front glacis fuckery but you still need to remove the antiradiation cladding and fill some gaps. Also Kontakt-5, lower glacis of TOS, some other features is different from normal T-72 so you need to scratchbuild those too.

modelcollect T-72/90 has too small roadwheels and wheel spacing is slightly too compressed

They're vinyl tracks and they have "sprue" attachment point on BOTH SIDES. How could they fuck it up so badly? When I built the Emhar Mk.IV the tracks were alright and only hat attachment points on one side.

Before college let out one of my professors bought me a table top game called TANKS may not ever actually play it but th models are nice. My family does what’s known as a Chinese Christmas where everyone buys one gift and then draws a number to see what gift they get. When it was my turn I had drawn a craftsmen tool box and about every other man in the room wanted to kill me. Gonna use the tool box to hold paints and other bits.Finally I have known a girl sense senior year of high school and with us both being social out cast we got along pretty well. She had been bugging me to buy her farming simulator for two damn years and thanks to the steam sell I bought FS 2017 for 19 burger bucks or something while she pays 60 some dollars for pic related.

That was a rather convoluted post and story. If your family all agreed to the exchange/game how can they really blame you tho. Also you two should be fucking or doing something else rather than giving each other some fucking farming simulator and scale models but that's out of the scope of this thread and board.
As for the model you either go the path of practice or man up and lose fear of messing the kit or pussy out and leave it in the stash forever.
As long as you're willing to learn you can ask before doing and if you mess up is not the end of the world, there are a lot of steps by steps using google. Better have fun and end with a meh build than leave it in a box forever imo.

I'm pulling these numbers out of my ass, but i assume that over way over 50% of the people who buy and build models don't use an airbrush, most of them don't look at youtube guides, forums/facebook groups or anywhere for advise and also most of them probably keep using enamel paint like they did 30 years ago.
In short, they build in a way they always did and like they did when they were a child.

A channel with such "mediocre" builds is popular because those people won't get intimidated by advanced tools, techniques and awesome results.

In a way, something like this is important for the hobby, because the bad modelers are the vast majority.

Well, desu the 1/72 Revell Eurofighter is a very shitty kit. Tried building it myself 2 times and both times I gave up. Although that was way back when I started to build models. Tried building my first in 2011 and second in 2012. I should probably try building one next year. You know what they say. Third time's the charm :v)

Plastic is too thin on that part to really do anything with. This was molded in the 80s and is almost see through it’s so thin. I fear sanding that would just lead to bigger problems. However, I did sand some off of the front fenders. I don’t even think I could sand and putty the one you circled. It would just be a massive hole and hard to fill right.

Wrong. The Henry J from the same era is just as thin. All model kits from Revell/AMT from the 80s are terribly thin. I encourage you to pick one up someday. The earlier issue of this 56 Ford is made out of a higher grade plastic IMO and is more forgiving for body work.

All these above are for commission and are for customers.

For my personal builds I have a 1/35 dragon Panther F, Tauro A7V.

For 1/6 I not building anything atm as I need the time to focus on customer tanks, but my next 1/6 tank for myself will be a M4A3E2 Jumbo w/ full engine interior.

The RC starter kits are about 5K, as for me to build them... I don't post prices but it's more then the price of the kit.

As for the scratch builds I don't sell those as the time required is too much.

Static exterior builds are about 4K

yeah my house is a literal tank factory. 1/6 is more popular then you think but it's a different animal compared to 1/35.

vehicle wise there are about 4 companies who make kits. There are about 2 US based companies that are mostly, both are really small scale outfits. The rest are mostly in the UK,

Dragon did have the balls a few years ago to release a few 1/6 kits most notably were the PZII and the M4A3 sherman. They were going to make a firefly composite hull but it never came out. 21st century also had the M5A1 Stuart which is in just about everyone's collection.

Other than that 1/6 is a scratch build hobby. And as much as people buy tanks from me the majority of my sales are for resin detail upgrades for both the kits and the scratch builds.

As for other meetups I'm the wrong person to ask as there are no clubs or meet ups near me so I never go. I've been invited to a few but they were always way too out of my way to be viable so I never went

In theory I guess some thinners could dissolve the chipping fluid, but I have no idea which particular thinners may make a mess of what chipping fluid. Safest bet is probably to test on something.

Italeri kits are not as bad as everyone gives them shit for,

They are older tooling compared to newer kits, and at times do need some more hand fitting but they are far from useless shit

Depends, Not everything can be molded / casted. Like I mentioned before with the 222 flak gun one of the challenging factors was scratch building the masters but also doing it in a manner that can be molded. You will also need some equipment like a pressure chamber / compressor.

A lot of people see the starter kits in craft stores and want to get into it, but without a pressure chamber your castings / molds will be plagued with pin / air holes. This is what separates production quality resin castings with novice casters, as it's more difficult then led on to believe.

When I started with resin It took about 3 years and a fuck ton of failures to finally get all the issues sorted out to produce the type of castings I do now.

With the internet and youtube it does help, but if never done before there will still be a learning curve to break through

The Swedish air force around WW2 doesn't appear to have seen any point in using nay paints beyond the basic camo ones, so not much detail painting to be done here once the panel highlights have been airbrushed on.

Decals were thick, sturdy, and almost impervious to MicroSol. Add in the very narrow, shallow, and somewhat soft panel lines of the kit itself and panel lining across them will probably be more hand painting than capillary action. On the plus side this means that if you, as a purely hypothetical example, manage to put the division insignias (a bomb-carrying mosquito with a machine gun nose http://home.swipnet.se/peters_flygsidor/images/David_Gul1.jpg ) on the wrong side it isn't too hard to switch them around.

And with one destroyer showing up missing a part and the shipping for the other probably playing bumper cars with the USN at the moment I decided to go for something that should go together with a bit less effort than another Marivox kit for the next build. Might get political after that, we'll see what turns up in the mail.

Their new molds are fairly good. Nothing spectacular, but they don't ask alot of money for them either. But some of their old kits are just as bad as everyone says.

My first ever scale model kit (have experience with warhammer and forge world) is the revell Battlestar Galactica, found her randomly in a model shop along with the pegasus who is waiting in her box. I did a lot of research after buying her and I'm currently waiting on the arrival of some plasticard, scribing tools, craft knives and a few other bits and bobs. I'm not going to try and make her completely accurate to the show but I will be adding in as much detail to the rib spacing as possible and I want to try and put the hangar deck ribbing in, I saw that there is a photo etch kit for that purpose but will not be buying it. I'm a bit scared of fucking it up, so far I've built the sub assemblies and can't really go much further until I get my tools and get back to my own place.

I was thinking about something like a zombie-ish scenario and a maritime unit, like a convoy protection from the port to the city or coastline units. So I based the camo on the german midget subs and pacific theater US planes. I started really hyped the thing with those ideas in mind but got a bit uninspired. I'm toying with the berlin brigade if I don't kill myself after the chieftain or the dualtex US experimental camo (pic related) in one of the MERC colorways as it looks more forgiving than berlin brigade. Feel free to share cool camos or ideas as I'm quite lost on this one and usually come up with something but this one just resists me.
All my old builds are historical so I got a bit bored and when I started again I thought doing what if stuff and I find it quite fun, I recommend everyone to try stuff that they don't usually build from time to time.
The AT-ST is a pretty fine design, I think you could play with the base grey and white wash or green stripes if full grey doesn't attract you much.

I personally dislike it, but I can see why people would go that route. I prefer post shading/highlighting for faking lights as the colors are more "solid" and vibrant plus its more flexible as a whole technique than preshading.

Dive bomber, Saab's first design. The odd looking landing gear pulls double duty as air brakes. You wouldn't be alone in finding it hard to place though, one intercepted a lost Ju88 at one point, and the German bomber promptly surrendered due to mistaking it for a fighter.

Radial engine and greenhouse canopy making it look like a cousin of the Zero and B5N perhaps?

I was looking for the Galactica for a few years and had given up as it either wasn't available or stupidly expensive, this one was £20 in a random shop I checked on Christmas eve, made me very happy. There's a big problem with the Galactica kit which is the turrets are really, really bad - they're the ones in the middle. They released an upgrade kit to fix it with the outer turret design which is also the one that comes with the pegasus - my plan is to use silicone putty and cast the pegasus ones.

Reminds me of the stock 40mm in the Tamiya USS Cushing kit (right) and the Pit-Road replacements I got (left). Mid is because Pit-Road only gave me four, while the ship needed five, so I bodged something together with a the barrels of a quad.

The Galactica turrets are maybe 6mm by 2mm so I was having a heck of a head scratch trying to work out how to replace them.

As for the Dragons, there are a few versions that have been made over the years, some require more hand fitting then others.

The tamiya shermans are a bit dated, but are simple builds and have ok details molded in. All use the lower hull that tamiya developed in the 1980's and have no sponsons. These can be scratch built out of some plastic, or you can get the resin upgrade corrective set from Formations

The above is not true however for their newest sherman hull offerings, such as the M4A3E8, M4A3E8 (Korean War), and the M40. These are all new tooling and don't have the above issue

Pic related A 1996 vintage Dragon M4A1. These kits were dragons 2nd generation sherman kits but this one went together with no issues and almost no hand fitting. The only caveat is to pitch the shitty link and length track with something else like workables or like on mine a set of single length vinyl from AFV club. Was a very easygoing and enjoyable build

I guess I’ll look at the tamiya m4a3eb. I’ve seen it before but wasnt sure if it was any good. No idea if the tracks are vinyl or otherwise shit but I guess I can always upgrade

The tracks are ok from what I've seen, typical tamiya quality. I'll put it this way, when I get to mine I'll be keeping the tracks.

Academy also has a line of affordable shermans too, and from what I can remember from the ones I built they build pretty well too, and were well designed.

If you want to build a WWII M4A3E8, the only option for the T66 tracks are metal ones which cost more than the kit. The T80 tracks weren't in use to the very end of WWII and were really only seen on occupation tanks.

This is not accurate. In the past Academy copied the tooling from Tamiya. Although there are similarities with the suspension design the tooling on the two are very different.

Dragon back in the early days did use straight copies of italeri runners and later the when retooled still had italeri elements.

The Academy sherman kits of the late 90's and 2000's used all original tooling, and do build well out of the box.

I've built both the AFV club M10 and the Academy counterpart and between the two the Academy did have better detailing, specifically with the interior. The M12 was also a decent build. Compared to Tasca they are not nearly as advanced tooling wise but just like the Italeri post I wrote above are not shit.
