At Christmas my sister (three kids, all under 10) claimed that nobody wants toys anymore because they have their phones. She did this because I bought her kids hot wheels instead of apple giftcards.

Is this just some bullshit or is there any merit to the claim?

Now I'm not a parent, but that seems like a bad decision.

I don't think there's any merit to that sentiment, toys can be more fun than digital stuff. Get them some toys they've never seen before though, especially of an IP they've never seen or something completely unique.

When I was a kid I had video games (portable ones, too) *and* toys. Nowadays all that matters are the games, because it's an easy way to avoid kids causing trouble.

I've seen grade schoolers with iphones and Apple Pay, and they have no sense of money management or spatial awareness. It's a wonder how their parents give so much to them yet haven't run up a bill.

I was just looking at eBay's collection of the hottest toys of 2017, and they fucking suck.
The only appealing one was a marble drop thing that looked the same as every other marble drop thing from the last 60 years.
I don't think toy companies are hardly bothering anymore because kids don't give a shit about actual toys anymore.

There needs to be like an age restriction on the internet, like when you get your driver's license, you can start using the internet or some shit, I can't imagine how boring and stupid these kids are going to grow up to be.

That actually sounds like a reasonable parental discipline tool, and could also imply that they heavily ration the amount of time their child gets to use it. Like if a kid gets only an hour a day on the tablet, which is reasonable, and you take away 10 minutes, that's pretty good parenting through and through.

But letting them use the tablet at age 5 is an awful idea.

I don't Let my kids have any tech. No phones games or even TV. But I let them play with all the vintage toys I can get my hands on. They are super popular at school all the other kids wont to come over and play all the time and they get great grades. My sister has 3 kids just like ops situation they all are glued to I crap 24 h a day they all have autism and no social skills and have been held back in school. Do not let your kids have phones it is doing more damage than people think I see it every day first hand.

I work at a pre-k to second grade elementary school, and I have to say, kids have gotten worse.
They can't make eye contact, the few of them that will talk all have speech impediments because they learned how to talk from youtube videos made by Indian men trying their best to phonetically read nursery rhymes, and they're all so fucking fat they can't run or play.
They're all rude as shit. They look at you like you're filth, like how dare you try to talk to me.
I don't know if that's from their twenty year old parents talking ugly to fast food workers, or if they're just bewildered that an adult human is actually speaking to them.
The only shit you ever hear them playing pretend is minecraft, or, I shit you not, re-enacting those fucking spiderman elsa skits from youtube.
They called our parents lazy for parking us in front of the tv, but hell, at least they had to yell at us to turn it off every now and then to come eat lunch.
These people sit their morbidly obese toddlers in a chair with an ipad plugged into the wall and a family size bag of bbq baked lays and just leave the fucking house.
Toys, cartoons, and imagination are dead.
Fuck, I'm sorry for writing all this, but every day at school just makes me sadder.

Your sister is a bad mother. Kids need to go out so that their eyes won't adjust to short distances only as their bodies mature and develop myopia.
Furthermore, a big part of proper parenting is providing positive examples and limiting negative influences. TV is a bad influence. The internet even more so.

I can't speak for all kids, but at least my brother and I were not fond of the Matchbox cars we very occassionally got from uncles. We much prefered transformers for their transformation gimmick and being two toys in one. Get the kids a few TFs. And if their father isn't much of a masculine figure to look up to then get them a few books (with pictures but not cartoony) about Greek and Norse mythology too.

Idk, feels like you're setting them up to be outcasts or be one of those kids who tries to find ways to do things secretly because it's too strict at home. Like kids who are allowed no junk food ever and who end up hoarding chips and Oreos under their bed that they got with their friend's parents.

Screen time is not inherently horrible. Screen time can even be "good" if it's in the form of interactive games, educational videos, or videos that get them moving like dance and song videos. It's letting kids do it for hours and hours and hours, unlimited, with no restrictions or supervision, and basically setting them up with the expectation that they will be entertained with intense audio/visual stimuli every hour of every day that results in kids who are mentally and socially fucked.

Having a time limit of 30 minutes to 1 hour of tablet/screen time each day, and encouraging "good" screen time over mindless screen time is better than trying to keep them from living in the 21st century.

I feel really spoiled/lucky now. My 5 year old niece is obsessed with imaginative play, to the point where it's sometimes exhausting because she wants to act out these elaborate imaginative stories for an hour or more straight and I get tired because my 30 year old brain can't keep up. Really depends on the kids and parents to be honest with you. I have two cousins around the same age (both in elementary school), one only cares about phones, expensive clothing, parties and all the things older teens give a fuck about, the other loves toys, imaginitive play, asks me to watch cartoons with them and is always happy to tell me about their favorite fictional characters. They're barely one year apart but act and think completely different. Different families, different children.

It's true that most kids these days get iPhones early though, I'm pretty sure I saw several articles saying iPhones and iPads are what kids wanted the most (as xmas presents) since 2015.
