Do you care how much articulation a figure has? If so do you prefer an articulated figure over a more detailed but less articulated figure?

For me it depends on the character, I don't expect hulk to be doing the splits as much as I'd expect him to be well defined and have muscle shading

Yes, overall I prefer more articulation. If whoever is making the figure is bad at it, then the articulation could end up detracting from the figure, but more often than not, more isn't a bad thing. I can't stand things like swivel hips. If a figure has them, I 99% of the time don't want it.

Agreed. If it's a hero type figure, I'd expect it to be able to pull off some action poses. Agile heroes should have a better range of motion than power-types, who I think are better suited to stronger, more statuesque poses anyway. At the very least, it should be able to do its signature pose if it has one.

I think that's it. All that should be basic stuff. Why companies still release things without bicep or thigh swivels is absolutely stupid. And Hasbro can simply not figure out that elbows should bend quite a bit. I don't need double jointed anything. I just want the joint to actually work.

95% of normal human figures need at minimum MOTUC-level articulation to be worthwhile. To me, those figures have the most fundamental bare minimum joints required for a modern enjoyable toy laid out and accounted for; they could be improved with better things (i.e. ankle rockers, hinged wrists, butterfly joints, double knees and elbows) but they're not intrinsically ruined because they lack them. If it's a Professor X toy, then okay, we can trim some things down maybe like no ankle pivots or thigh swivels or calf swivels and put some of the tooling money into something more pressing like his hover chair. And if it's a super-deformed style, joints can be left out either for aesthetic reasons or engineering ones without an issue and be better off for it.

There is a definite sweet spot, and it can be tipped out of alignment in both directions. You can get grotesque and poorly implemented over-articulation like with Revoltechs, where the sculpts are obliterated with shit like joints in capes and no thought is put into preserving aesthetics for areas like shoulders or knees. Or you can bring your line to failure by having some points of modern articulation but overlooking fundamentals, like DC Icons did with their lack of thigh swivels and the shitty implementation of barely useful torso articulation.

It's all in the execution. Homecoming Spider-man SHF hips is just swivels but it's one of the most articulated hip configuration ever.
Recent Yamaguchi Revoltech's hips are simple ball socket joint with a thigh rotation cut, but because of the unique angles and configuration they're better than any fancy and complicated gimmicky joints. And they look better too. Spider-Gwen has one of the best asstech while having high articulation.

Even with humanoid figure, or a bulky one, Having good range of motion and not showing a lot of joint baggage is doable. It's just most makers don't care or the nature of the toy isn't worth their time and money to have both.

It boils down to the retarded way American toy companies make figures. They create a vanilla stance sculpt, then cut joints into them. The joints and sculpt DON'T WORK TOGETHER, resulting in articulation that can be utterly useless. Or you get horrible square cuts like Mattel's infamous T joint. Or a twist of one part ends up being out of alignment in every position except vanilla.

Compare it with how some better examples from Japan do it. Where elbows, waists and knees look far more natural when posed at different angles. You can tell that the sculpt was made to accomodate that specific joint.

Mcstatues tend to have good sculpt and paint but pretty much no posability while stuff like AY Spiderman can do virtually any pose but looks awful.
My perfect balance would be something like Figma Cobra which looks great in any of his more famous poses.

Like >>6717739 said, it depends on the figure itself. I like some Safari/Papo/Schleich figures that have zero or just a couple points of articulation but good sculpts. When it comes to 1/12 scale I prefer lots of articulation that works for the character. A big, muscular character or creature need not be at contortionist-levels of articulation, but characters who are depicted with a wide range of motion in their body language in the source material (Spiderman, xenomorphs, toku stuff, etc) should be as poseable as possible without sacrificing aesthetics too much.

Really depends. I've rebought tons of toys from my childhood ever since I started collecting and they obviously don't have tons of articulation. But newer stuff needs a good amount of articulation. Western designers need to take references from Japanese lines. It's embarrassing how bad some of them are.

Dolljoints look like shit unless you can hide them with armor or clothing. Figma are great quality but I can't ignore the weird cuts and tumors everywhere. That's why I'm a statuefag.

Yamaguchi also leaves gaping holes and floaty shoulders.

Select figma, shf or even Frame arm girl kits. The way the joints are shaped and the recesses hollowed work with each other to look very streamlined in different poses.
