The no photo rule isn't really new, was the case even at NY Toy Fair last year with some licenseshit and Ninjago. I think limiting their presence has something to do with how fast bootlegs appear and how allegedly Disney is getting more and more stingy about toymakers not being protective enough of their designs or something similarly over the top - potential of legal action against the Chinese is limited so Lego instead focused on removing leaks (not that it achieved much), hence official presentations being limited like that don't surprise me, either.

Alright, post a screen of what you're working on right now, regardless of how far you are.

I've been working on a bike for the Killow bigfig that's a bit more to scale than the set he comes in. Still missing some details but I think I'm getting there.

Thank you. I love them too, so many fun variants and opportunities for interesting stories. I still remember cozying it up with my dromedary in freelancer. Fun fact about that green thing, it was the result of a guy (white-eagle I think) who posted on a smaller freighter that mine wasn't very impressive because it was so small. I can't remember. He posted a pic of his which was a little larger. But then I forgot about it a long time ago, never posted it till now.
I'm a bit sad now, I realized all my old creations were lost when I switched computers.

The little gray and orange on the side bug me a bit, but I can totally relate with how hard getting a 100% cohesive colourscheme pattern with rare colours can be.
The fig totally floats my boat too, the parts and prints around that late 90's early 2000's era that still feel classic yet are substantially more laid back and grimy are my jam.

Just the diner so far for Creator modular though. Hmm... I wonder what LEGO has in store. Assembly didn't impress me and the fishing shack is just not city/modular friendly IMO. Never in the catalog is "Hard to Find" in the modular category so they have to have something planned!

Thanks, the original idea was an orange rear half and a magenta forward half, but then I started bleeding the orange into the front.

Gonna be honest with you anon, it was never about the pieces. When I first put the sides on the central rims, I thought about making them a solid color because as you can see I have all the pieces necessary and it's a really simple snot to flip a tile upside-down, but I just got that Red Hulk set and it has like six or eight of those curved tile with studs on top pieces so I was being lazy and didn't want to bother because my original vision for the front was really gaudy with livery and some other shit sticking out of it anyway. Seeing it in real life with a solid-colored side makes me think that I do want to put some more livery on it.

If so, how was Hasbro able to release their own line of "buildable" (or at that could be taken apart) action figures?

Also, could Lego release minifigs, like say Rebel Pilots, along with a handful of bricks/plates/tiles/whatevers, an astromech and some instructions that tell you which pieces you need to swap out on an X-Wing set to make it that pilots X-Wing and then call it an "Upgrade Pack" or somesuch?

Yes and yes. As long as they count as a construction toy, not an action figure, they won't be stepping on the toes of the companies that have the licenses to produce action figures (the US court system has a lot of specific criteria that determines what kind of toy something is classified as).

No, because Lego undoubtedly has a contract with Disney that guarantees Lego exclusive rights to produce buildable figures until the license expires.

Those "Battle Packs" of four minifigs and a small build are the closest they get to that. The build is required to make the set not count as an action figure pack, because the build is what you're buying the set for and the minifigs are just there to accompany it wink wink.

It started in the 1980s and 1990s when there was a lot of argument in the courts over what counted as an action figure vs. a doll. The whole thing is really interesting to read about, with stuff like some characters in a line being classified differently than other characters because they represented animal-people and not humans.

That's pretty much a buildable action figure. Sure it has less parts then Lego, but it comes (at least partially) unassembled and you're suppose to build it, then buy more Hero Mashers and take them apart to build into new and fun characters.

So if buildable figures are separate from action figures in terms of licenses, and Lego has the license for buildable, then how was Hasbro able to make buildable figures? Is it a shared license?

Looks great. Love the shaping of the wings. Have you tried using wedge plates for the side panelling on the fuselage though (leading up to the nosecone)? Or does that not work for whatever reason?

Currently on a nostalgia bend for Adventurers sets and started working on a revamp/reimagining of the Orient Expedition 7419 Dragon Fortress set. Couldn't find the base plate part on LDD so I decided to just do a brick built base since it looks nicer anyway.

I'm gonna make everything a bit more detailed (more akin to a Creator Expert modular than a normal play set), and make it more like a heavily guarded mausoleum housing the corpse of the emperor rather than a fortress.

I'd say Monster Fighters has a slightly different appeal to the Adventurers line (horror movie monsters vs adventures through mystical ancient ruins). But Pharaoh's Quest was very clearly trying to do what the Adventurers Egypt sub-theme did. Maybe kids are only interested in sets based on existing pop culture brands now.

Most original themes within last 10 years actually managed to last for more than a year, even ones without any story, let alone tv show, to go with them (Power Miners, Space Police, Atlantis), so I'm not sure what was the problem with these two and Alien Conquest, which all vanished before even recieving a second wave. With some themes it was obviously just the matter of the sets being boring (World Racers, the most recent castle) but you'd think monster hunters and alien invasion are strong enough ideas to sustain more than 5 sets.

An old relatively shorty story called Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell about researchers who find an alien lifeform frozen in the ice for ages only to discover it wasn't as dead as they thought. It can consume and copy anyone, complete with their memories, and is totally hostile.

It was made into a movie called The Thing from Outer Space in the 50s but was a very loose adaptation. The critter wasn't a mimic, just a hulking Frankenstein-style plodding monster. Then John Carpenter made The Thing in the 80s. Also a loose adaptation but playing up the horror and gore angle of a creature that can infect, consume, and become anyone where very part of it can mutate into a monster the moment it's discovered.

Sorry it took so long man. I hand-built an entire lightbox setup out of cardboard and ducttape just to take a good pic for it. I'm pretty hype to expirement with it further and use it for all my other builds!
I'm really proud of the robot, I just used the limited parts i had around. I even got to make the little gap under the cargo exactly half a plate thin all along its edge wich really tickled my autism.

It was a fun game, i'd love to play again some time.

Ah I'll have to think up something fun. I have to go on a trip tomorrow morning though, so i might not post it until a day or two (or way longer like last time). We already had a ship/boat and a robot so i'll try and think up something of another variety.

Working with a lightbox like this is a whole other world of logic than i used to. The closest i came to this beforehand was wrapping toiletpaper around my bed lamp. It's great for photographing small objects on a plain background. However i had more trouble using it with my dioramas and interiors, wich is something i much more enjoy to be honest. Maybe try some different bulbs?

It's because when you only have a few colors, your camera tries to autocorrect and it ends up looking not quite right. If you had more reds and greens in the snack bar pic in front of some of that white space background, it would look a little softer. You could also use colored paper but that means you have to pick colors that work with your pieces and don't throw your camera off in a different direction.

Ah ok, i do notice my phone changing contrast and colours when you point it at different parts of a scene. I like my builds with only sparse colours. Does it help if you can somehow turn of that autocorrect, or is that only something higher end cameras can do?

Well, on page 73 it says that if you tap the icon that looks like a gear, you can bring up your camera settings. You should play around with the White Balance setting to see if you can find one that works well with the type of lights you're using. You should also set your ISO as low as it can go.

I don't know where they came from because I got them in an unsorted lot at a garage sale. Those treads are all I have, and they were exactly enough to make the halftrack. Looking at Bricklink, apparently they were only in the SW Hailfire Droid set, which makes sense because I have that super battle droid and some other pieces from that set as well. Would have been cool to get the full set of links.

What do you think is an acceptable price per piece for ((new)) Legos?
I'm asking because I'm that same anon who's been lately saying he's been getting back to Lego: when I was a kid our money was a bit tight and I almost never got any big sets. Instead I mostly got some smaller ones which led to my collection then being relatively lot of minifigs, accesories and small specialized pieces, but not much big blocks and basic building material. So last night I decided to order something to cure this in form of some Classic sets (lots of colors too which is cool). Set inventories say I'm looking at 1400-1500 bricks, so how badly did I get screwed with the total of ~50€ spent?

The standard usually used is $.10 per piece. Anything less than that is considered good, anything above considered bad. By those terms, you're getting a deal. IDK what the conversion rate between euro and USD is, but official pricing varies between EU countries anyway

Creator sets tend to be the best deal, licensed sets and architecture sets tend to be more expensive. You pay a bit of a tax for minifigs, especially licensed. Often times, large, expensive, direct-to-consumer sets like the modular buildings are a very good deal in terms of price per part.

It also really depends on your tastes as a builder. Personally, I build mechs and robots and love the fiddly small bits. But if you still like building with basic bricks, then you can get your bricks for cheap. Take a look at bricklink, too. You can stay well under 10c per piece if you buy in bulk and sort by price at a store

I don't see anything wrong with it, glass would be ideal but there's no way to make that cockpit with transparent pieces. also I think that the original miniatures made for Star Wars had just a frame for a cockpit as well.

I like both basic and special pieces. The problem was, in my old Lego stash there's stuff like a skateboard, katanas and a frog, but no proper doorways or windows. So I decided to stock up on that basic stuff for now.

I had the Enchanted Island set as well when I was young. I could probably put it together if my mom still has my giant tub of legos. I have pieces from tons of sets from 90s-2000. I could probably recover them and piece together most the sets. I'm sure I lost pieces over time. I never kept my old sets together. I kept the set together for a couple months at first, then I would throw them together with everything else and built my own stuff. I never ever organized them. Just dumped them on the floor and had to dig for whatever I needed.
