>>6734745It's actually super easy. I stole the techniques from Warhammer terrain builders/model railroad setups.
Basically, you start with pink insulation foam (Home Depot, comes in massive sheets), you cut it with a hot wire cutter (amazon, about 17 bucks) in a jagged random pattern, from a few different angles to get the rock-face look. Each level of riser on here is a layer of the foam, the flat surface is the face of the foam.
Then I painted them with cheapass acrylic paints from Michael's, starting with the darkest color and layering on progressively thinner layers of lighter paints, practically dry brushing for most layers, to get the edges looking like stone. Then I glued down some model grass (also from Michael's) on the fantasy one (the second one I did, a little more complete than the first) and stacked em up. That's about it. The painting takes some time since it's a big surface but other than that it's pretty easy and cheap, and it looks nicer than transparent plastic risers.
