consider the following:

Really that's all they are: beanie babies pop culture edition. But unlike BBs Funko has played a smart hand and hasn't gotten blind with greed(yet), they just steadily let the market exist and pump out hot flash pops that general masses would buy(such as season 3 R&M pops just as the season ended, Jurassic Park pops rolling out as a new film is being advertised ) while churning out the cheap licenses for the hoarders (Garbage pal and Fraggal Rock which are some of the cheapest pop culture licenses to date) also they try to make the right production runs to ensure sales stay steady.
In short miserable people love easy hobbies that can make them feel good and anything can be addictive. This is no different than TF or SW fans that have rooms on rooms full of their favorite obsession however unlike those the entry level is very low and easy to manage, thus Pops are successful.

I'm sure there's legit outcasts or geeks that like them and collect them but most people buying funko pops are doing it so they can post them on social media and say "AM SUCH A NERD LOL XD BAZINGA"
It's also a way for them to avoid being judged
A waifu/husbando figure is gonna get you dirty looks and names, no matter how innocent it is but funko pops are something normies see as...well, normal.

It actually did well at first but it was a Hasbro brand which limited it's pop options and cut what you could collect, also it rolled out before geek culture was seen as completely normal (around 2012 when the kids born in the 80s and 90s were adults that by majority "refused to grow up") so it was still at a time that having a row of figures would be seen as bad where now and days you have to get lewd jap school figurine levels to even have a chance to make someone cringe.

I never settle for second best, and this shit doesn't even qualify fora runner up. While I admit that they do occasioanlly do cool things, I'd never buy one of these for myself. They're low quality garbage, and I'd rather not have anything at all than a funko pop.

Also there's "ah real monsters" toys that aren't funko pop, I think I have em somewhere in my basement.

I see them just sitting there, on a collector's shelf, gathering dust. You can theoretically open, pose and play with MIB or high end toys. But Pops? Even out of the package, they don't do a damn thing. And 90% of them in collector's hands are still boxed.

Anybody who's buying them for long-term "investment" is a fool who rightly needs their money taken away from them. That, and they must have lived under a rock during the Beanie Baby days. Stocks & bonds are far, far, FAR more reliable & faster money growing investments. (and take up less space.)

I just don't get it.

Most people using the long term investment shtick are just rationalizing the cost, it’s no different than people buying overpriced Con exclusive transformers or Marvel toy to then try and talk it off the idea they just spent triple or more the cost on lumps of plastic with the idea of them being valuable. Truth of all this is it’s really fucking stupid and wasteful to put money into toys or any luxury item. But we all liked something and it leads to bad purchases.
I don’t see the appeal of Pops, but I’m sure most don’t see the appeal of my 3rd party toys or vintage board game collection.

It won't crash like beanie babies did. Beanie Babies crashed because they did reruns on sold out animals. Pops! makes a brad new mold/deco keeping the two completely different rather than they are 1 for 1 short of a date on them. Beanie Babies pushed the market into thinking they were a worth while investment. Funko pushes the "collect them all" shtick but never once pulled the bullshit that they be worth it in the long run. Beanie Babies sold only in smaller markets so when things went tits up they burn fast. Funko will sell to anyone without apology meaning that when they have their drops (like in 2014) it dosn't hit as hard and they can get back up. Finally the big killer of ty Beanie Babies was that pants on head stupidity of ending the line in 2000 to then without blushing roll out ty2k Beanie Babies in the same year nuke any value those plush animals could ever have because everyone now knows it just a shell game and that they had been had, also when you end a line you cut off your fresh market because no one starting with the ty2k Beanie Babies would consider investing in the old retired and dead line. Funko has played it straight and has more or less kept the same box design, formula and system with no signs of mixing it up for the sake of a sales boost, that major factor is why it's now out lasted the Beanie Babies craze is because when that dip in 14 occurred they didn't lose their shit and try and sucker the market.(I mean more so than they have.)

Maybe a bit off topic, but you know how funko does mystery mini boxes too? I've been thinking of things to do with the duplicates from the boxes, and realized that you could probably make show themed chess sets fairly easily out of them. People will just be wanting to ditch the more common ones, so you could probably buy those for cheap and paint on half to create the different sides. Only thing would be deciding what mini represented what chess piece, and marking them as such.

On a different note, anyone ever take a look around their room and realize they have a lot of different things on display, both toy and non-toy? In the future you are required by law to have a pop made of you and are only allowed to own Funko products. If you are caught with a toy not lisensed by Funko, you are executed and used as pop material.

Why be scanned? Funkos are that generic you could just scroll through 10 different hairstyles, bodies and accessories like glasses and make yourself. Pretty much the same as making a minifig of yourself.
