I'm a retard so somebody please clarify this to me: in-universe, none of the characters look the same as the toy versions? Are the movie depictions closer to what they """canonically""" look? With the weird fleshy bits? Obviously I'm guessing they have fongers and such but do their mouths move?

Way back when, Greg used to say the movie versions were what they really looked like. Then came Web of Shadows with its rotor-backed Rahaga and one-handed Hordika and Greg changed his mind, saying the movie designs were just artistic license. The films also had other stupid shit, like Onewa only ever has one tool in the movie but two in every other depiction. Sidorak and Roodaka have Rhotuka launchers on their backs in the movie, but according to the story, those are on/in their arms.
Far as I know, they do have fingers and fleshy bits in canon, but I doubt the masks move, unless they're organic like the Inika masks. On the other hand, the books sometimes describe them frowning or smiling, so who knows.

It's a yes and no.they have organs and muscles but as anon said there were some aspects of the movies that were wrong. The movies are the closest to how they actually looked, sans Legend Reborn. That was the one movie where the characters should've looked even more organic since they were humanoids with cybernetic implants, but they did a 180 and made them all look like the toys instead.

I always wondered why they made the Bara Magna folk more organic and when they decided to do so. Before, during, or after the movie was made? Since the movie had to have started production much earlier, either the decision to make them organic came too late in the game to be reflected in the film (and if so, why make that decision at all, why not just follow the movie and keep them as robots?) or there was serious miscommunication between the filmmakers and the story team.
Greg also said the Thornax ammo was only made into a fruit after the movie's already been animated, hence why it isn't a fruit in the film. So it's possible the same happened with the characters. Maybe the movie crew animated them thinking they were robots, then the story team retroactively made them into organics. But there's so many other contradictions in that movie (the Mata Nui island having forests, the Matoran living in some metal chamber instead of on islands, Aqua Magna having landmasses, the mask traversing galaxies) that it's thoroughly possible the production crew was just uninformed about the story team's intent. But if so, that's fucked up because Greg worked more closely with them than with the Miramax guys.

I assume it's a mix of miscommunication and simply not giving a shit, given that there are tons of errors in that movie like Aqua Magna being covered with random landmasses that aren't part of Mata Nui's camouflage, the island Mata Nui being still completely intact when it should've been ravaged by Bohrok or Mata Nui telling that scarab that he never needed help before.

I honestly hated Mata Nui in 09. I feel like he should've been more like Toa Ignika where he had to learn how to interact with others, the difference between good and evil, and just who/what he was and how he had a duty to rescue the MU from Teridax. Like it would've been so interesting to see him realize he used to be a god and he had it taken from him as he recalled being ejected from his body in the Mask of Life. The whole "honor and duty" crap and the fact that he called himself a Toa made no sense. He surveyed planets for a living. Why would he be all about that shit?

I always thought back in the day that the comics were cannon. It made everything simpler at the time to just assume that. Now in retrospect I'm pretty sure that none of the versions of the story are the cannon, but the comics are still probably the closest.

I got some broken apart sets for a good price from this guy in my local flea market that store specializes in Lego.
Lego and not necessarily Bionicle or CCBS.
But what I did find was pretty cheap, about 5 bucks for everything.
Right now I'm working on restoring them but I'm missing a few parts. Which is weird because I could have sworn I had the rest of the pieces for Hewkii and Mata Nui
I'm actually almost done with them right now.

Are you just now getting into Bionicle? That's refreshing.
Matoran are basically just a race of villagers that built most of the structures you see in the lore. While there were a few cases where Matoran turned into Toa, that was very much the exception. They're just the every-men of Bionicle.

The Mata Nui online game gave you your first in-depth look at the world they came from and that environment was filled with functioning mechanisms built from Lego pieces and a good majority of the fauna were chosen and designed based on availability of Lego/Bionicle parts, so it's not to much of an exaggeration to say the toy aspect of Bionicle shaped the setting itself quite a lot.

Some faggots decide to build an universe inside a giant robot, where the citizens of the universe act like blood cells. The planet however explodes just as they're launching the robot to space. I would like some suggestions on how to organize as I break this bin down. I was hoping to go with a seperation in to 1.technic components. 2.Bionicle body parts, 3.General ball and socket pieces, 4. Accessories/tools/greeblings. 5. Not Bionicle but It got unwieldly quickly as it was hard to segregate some piece types to one category. Finally finished General Grievous' cape.

There's more than one way, you could still sort your parts by general groups like you were doing, but with a pile for the oddball parts that don't fit into any other categories. Sometimes it's better to just make an arbitrary decision based on where you'd look for the piece, or do it by hierarchy (towballs>pins/axels>half liftarms>liftarms). It doesn't really matter how specific you get, but I tend to sort by liftarms, half-liftarms, limb parts, axels/pins, torsos and armor, shells, feet, heads, gears, weapons, mata-neck-like parts, and so on. Then once you've done that, you can sort your soft-sorted piles into plastic bags. This will give you a good idea of how many containers you will need and what size. You will probably be able to get most of your collection properly sorted into under a dozen 12ish quart tubs, and for smaller parts, get some screw cabinets or bead organizers, preferably with removable separators or modular drawer sizes. Oh and don't forget to bathe any used bonkle in dish soap and warm water before you get started, anything played with by children is a biohazard, especially legos.

I would assume it also had to do with the insane amount of collectibles in 03. They probably wanted to reduce it to one item and opted for the disks since they already did (counting mctoran, turaga, toa, and toa nuva mask packs) 132 unique mask variants over the span of the first three years. And that's not even counting rahi, misprints, limited edition masks, titan sets, or the krana.

On top of that, they made Toa of Air green instead of white and justified it by making them live in the thick of the jungle for it to make sense. Sure, Toa of Ice are more fitting for white, so maybe something like a bluish off white could work for Air, but let's face it, the four main basic elements this stuff comes from is fire, earth, water, and air. Most people I would assume would considering electricity to be the next element to consider before ice, which would also help with the coloring schemes too. Shame they fucked up the actual re-release of Bionicle and any other re-releases, even under the idea of "Don't worry guy's we're going back to what was successful and branching off of that instead of doing what we want" are doomed to fail from the beginning. Such great toys with so much promise.

Well, at least there is a good association for green and air/wind. Wind has long been associated with the color green because, when there's wind, it blows trees, and some cultures believed that plants produced the wind.

As for G2, yeah, it's a shame they didn't correct what they could. I think I'd make the elements something like:

>Blue for water and ice
>Brown for rock/earth, cut earth
>White for air, cut ice
>Yellow for electricity
>Green for jungle/plantlife, keeping the new addition that's actually kind of cool and fits with many classical elements

Ice would be integrated into water as it should be in this situation. I agree ice has its place as its own element, but these 6 elements and their colors make the most sense. Especially when we have rock/earth which are basically the same thing, and water/ice which could be essentially the same thing given the right context. Removing these conflicts makes room for two more elements, those being jungle and electricity, which is much more exciting than 4 elements with 2 additional ones only being somewhat different.

I'd say purple is a good substitute if there had to be one, but it kinda ruins the continuity of what that anon established that I agreed with as far as the respective colors to their elements go. In my opinion, the gold is enough off yellow (not to mention the paint job makes it glisten which all/most other paint jobs on these things are matte) to distinguish it among any Toa of Lightning.

Huh, I was remembering it to be a little bit more of a bluish tint that gave it the rainbow-esque look you were looking for, but that was obviously years ago so I'm probably remembering that wrong. I could totally see that working as a color scheme provided the color didn't distract visually from the actual shapes and pieces their on. In the case of pic related they didn't so I'm sure there would be an easy way to make what you got going on in your head work no problem.

I still think purple is better. Electrical currents can be blue and purple as much as they can be yellow, and it just sticks out more amongst the diverse paletter of the team. If the Toa of fire were to have red with orange as an accent, having the electric Toa be yellow just makes him too similar to the fire color scheme imo. Not to mention, what would a Toa who's primary color is yellow use for an accent?

Again, it's not about what they CAN be, it's about what color is typically associated with electricity powers, that being yellow. I don't remember any ternary colors being used in the main color schemes of the first 3 generations of Toa (aka pretty much everything before Inika) so I don't see how yellow would be too similar to the red/orange of the fire scheme as yellow is hardly used in a basic fire color scheme, let alone using yellow with red before orange with red. Some sort of grey/light grey would work great as a secondary to yellow honestly, as yellow is already bright enough and adding an "I'm you but ligher" secondary color for it wouldn't work as well as it does for Toas that have colors such as green and blue.

One thing with Bionicle (especially the early years) is that all the colour schemes were all based on things you would find in nature. They were exaggerated a lot, but you could clearly tell which environment each Toa belonged to and what elements said environment consisted of. I feel like elements like electricity are too inorganic to really fit in with Bionicle all that well as a major part of it.

I get what you're trying to say but when I think electricity I think lightning storms, and most images of lightning storms I see are blue/purple in hue. The white Toa would have grey as a secondary most likely, and the others would have lighter variants of their primary, Like lime green, medium blue, etc. A purple Toa with lavender or sand purple as the secondary fits better than a yellow and gray one. Frankly yellow and gray has got to be one of the worst colorschemes I can think of honestly.

And that's fine you think of that, but most people would consider yellow to be the color associated with the element electricity/lightning/thunder, hence it makes most sense to associate yellow with a Toa of Electricity. White with light grey and yellow with dark grey fixes the grey confusion easily in my opinion. Anything grey-scale, especially black and grey, go well with most colors (as long as the darks and lights line up correctly, or the contrasts work well together) so I don't see how yellow and (dark) grey wouldn't work well together, considering many things conductive of electricity are of grey-ish color (traditionally) and tacking yellow accents on that for the main color would just complete the color scheme. Again I can totally see the merit behind purple being the color for electricity, but at the same time yellow is much more closely correlated to electricity in common depictions of elemental electricity, especially toys/storylines similar to bionicle.

Most electric pokemon, Electro, http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ColorCodedElements states it's almost always yellow (with rare cases like yours being purple or blue), the Flash's lightning, Megaman Battle Network Elec type is classified as yellow, are some just to name a few. Even read that in fire/ice/lightning type magical systems, lightning is usually yellow to differentiate between it and ice. Not to mention the fact that something like a Toa of Acid/Poison would be more fit for purple than Electricity.

That's an older vid someone else reuploaded cause the guy unlisted/removed most of his Bonkle-stuff. The project is toast. I think he even said he canned it cause it sucked, but I can't find the quote and I'm not gonna go look through his stuff to find it.
Some folks are questioning if there ever truly was a film at all or he just made some models and trailers to get attention. Back in '16, he said he made an hour and a half's worth of animation under just three months and that he'll need another three to finish it, which smelled lik BS to me. I mean the official Bionicle movies, just over 70 minutes, took an entire production team about a year to make, and they still looked rushed and barely finished.

Problem is, you already have a blue toa. If the color palettes for the others are very Mata-esque where the secondary is very close to the primary (a lighter or darker shade of said primary) then having one Toa with two totally different colors in their armor would just look weird.

Yes and no. Great art direction but some of them definitely had a "this looks shopped I can tell by the pixels" look to how the model was framed. Kinda like 80's/90's sfx, there is a special charm to it.
