making small dioramas or terrain is quite easy actually, you can even do it at minimal cost with normal household stuff and it looks good
the fence here was done out of some cardboard, toothpicks, a bit of sand and cereal box cardboard, hold together by cheep glue from a school supplies shop, colored with some cheep brown spraypaint and white paint for text and sand (grass and tree are from a garage sale)
urban ruins and the like are even easier, you just need some sturdy cardboard and small rocks/sand to put together some ruins or barricades, maybe some juice straws for pipes, glue it together, spraypaint with gray and a hand of shade color and you can start let your robots/action figures/whatever pose around it for a nice effect
it can be a bit messy and take some tries to get it right, but the results are satisfying
