They just did pirates a little while back. Castle seems unlikely given it was Nexo's heavier visual appeal than the futuristic/space qualities. Maybe Nexo is distinguishable enough that TLG could push Space again, though hey maybe they'll go back to wild west themes.

Yeah, like I said in the last thread, the eyes are spaced farther apart than a regular minifig because of the mask printing. That's why I think she'll look good with the skunk tail.

Take sports for instance. What dignity in seeing teams vying to get a ball over an arbitrary point? Times were you could enjoy it as a community event, enjoy a dog or bag of popcorn/crackerjacks. Later you could enjoy it over the radio and even later television. You could sit in the comfort of home and enjoy a cold beer, even invite your friends and neighbors over for the Big Game. Now you're allowed a full on "man cave" complete with memorabilia like some kind of shrine.

No I would say it's the over saturation of license products. Too much super heroes, star wars, ect...

Also the things like brickheads, buildable figures, and way too many mini figure sets instead of new interesting builds doesn't help. Also since lego won't bring back so many good retired generic themes, adults who pay thousands of dollars are going to the resell market instead.

Yeah, I actually imagine that LEGO could make quite a lot of money just by selling generic medieval/napoleonic/viking/etc minifigs for people who like to use LEGO for wargaming.

Didn't really knew about them until 5 seconds ago, but with a quick search I can guess that the problem was that they were kind of overpriced and they came out before LEGO killed their respective themes entirely so for many people it was probably a better idea to just buy regular sets.

I would think having one of their own in-house IPs amid the big things like SW, Marvel, and DC would be a good thing. Ninjago isn't for everyone, sure, and I wish they did other stuff as most of what LEGO puts out doesn't really appeal to me anyway, other than the Modulars, and one-off sets like some of the Ideas sets, and other large ones like the Ghostbuster's HQ.

And I am one of the people, whether you agree or disagree, since I know there are plenty of people on both sides, who really enjoys the generic Space themes, and wants to see them come back, along with some actually good Pirate sets and Castle stuff.

I would wager a big part of that is because they're also trying to cover more territory. Since they're trying to appeal more to boys and girls, and things like Elves, and Friends never really existed, before, and rarely ever had anything equal. And for many years in the past it was really just City, Space, Pirates, and Castle. Adding new themes, that sometimes change every year, and dropping a new SW sets like, 4 times a year doesn't help.

US middle class still holds 80% of the world's money.

This is truth, in fact I stopped buying toys completely at around the age of 11 or 12 because I just never played with them, I always preferred to expend all my time watching TV or browsing the web.
I play with my childhood toys way more nowadays than I ever did then, and the little kids I have around seem to play with toys even less. In fact the only kid I know that has even touched LEGO only cared about them while building them, after building them they sat abandoned forever (which is also what I did when I was a kid).

The whole "kids have more imagination than adults" meme has been bullshit in my experience, kids just wanna be given simple tasks to fulfill, adults are more interested in creation.

What? Kids are always running around with abstract thoughts in their mind. Playing is actually important for things like mental development and object/item association and an outlet for childish fantasies to come to fruition.

Prefer simple tasks? That's basically what school is, and most kids hate school. I'm not saying your totally right or wrong either way, but plopping a kid down in front of a screen so they vege out is probably not totally healthy, nor has it ever really been considered as such. Might as well just put them on Ritalin, or something, if you don't want to associate your kid with creative, fantastical play.

Depends on the kid, and adults don't run around but they also have lots of abstracts thoughts. Also I will agree that kids enjoy physical playing a lot, acting out scenes from movies or games and stuff, but I haven't seen kids enjoy using dolls or figurines as a means of story-telling as much as I have seen adults be into it.
Which makes sense, kids are full of energy, adults not so much.

But either way in my experience, being born into a world with internet and TV, it's not a matter of you sitting your kids in front of a screen 24/7, but rather kids seem to, on their own, choose to sit in front of a screen 24/7.
Particular to play videogames, kids might not watch TV when they're with other kids (or at all now that Youtube is a thing), but they will definitely play videogames.

Not really what he was talking about but sweet baby back ribs I missed buying parts direct from TLG. I racked up a bill buying the parts from the Lego Ninjago City set which included the various colored trophies. Good times but bad for my wallet. I was surprised they had so many set exclusive bits available given most of the other sets and the new Nexo stuff are still either unlisted or marked as sold out. Understandable that they do that for new sets until some time later since the initial rush for NEW! GIMMIE!!! leads to requests for missing/broken bits.

I'm still kicking myself that I didn't buy the Ninjago movie purple puffer fish guy headpiece before they took the direct buy down for the holidays. I saw it but held off a few days and bam, too late. Not that I'm sure I know what I'd do with a bunch of puffer fish headpieces, but dammit something. Eventually. Probably.

Best buy I'm seeing is that one. BL's cheapest on the dark blue is $.98 and up. Also the black if it weren't sold out. Most of the other prices are close and if you wanted to buy bulk for whatever reason you'd need to deal with multiple stores so maybe buying direct from Lego makes sense.

Once you find the design number you can look up every available color and price, if available. I tend to check out parts for sets I find interesting but don't otherwise want to buy to scope out what is offered. You can plug the same numbers into BL and make sure you're getting the best possible price. Sounds funny but BL is often cheaper owing to forces of demand and market saturation. Stuff like that.

Obviously, it really all comes down to personal preference.

I like the Parisian Restaurant the most, but that's just because I like;

The overall shape of it.
The colors used.
The Terrace/Patio that wraps around the side and the back.
Lots of little details, like the way the chimney is built up, the comfy patio out front, the artist's loft, some of the little architectural detailing, and shaping, etc.

The Detective's office I like, but its more that I like some of the individual parts a lot, more than I like the whole.

I like the look, build, and detailing of actual Detective's office room, the Pool hall, and the Barber shop.

However, overall, I don't really like the shape of the set as a whole. Nor do I really like the colors of the set overall. Also, even though LEGO abbreviates the space in these sets, even though they're pretty big sets, the architectural space usually makes sense, but we just have a random kitchen that's really only there for the "play feature" of the set (the whole smuggling cookies through the building thing) there's also weird things like one section of the Barber shop wall not even being all the way built up, etc.

The legs should stay together under the weight, but those ankles look really weak, and I doubt the joint would hold up. You'd constantly have the thing falling over forward or backwards.

Not sure how many anons scores the Walmart deals for the almost $6.00 (box of bricks and sand colored base plate) but I missed out on all three days. I came close but it would always OOS when I was at the buy now screen.

Anyways... I felt bad and like any LEGO fanatic I looked for deals elsewhere. I scored this (pictured) for $50 on Craigslist. It weighed in at 28 pounds and came with (4) 32x32 base plates and a 48x48 base plate as well.

Going through it I found it to be 99% LEGO with the following mixed in... A domino, Some computer RAM DIMMS, and a couple dollars worth of change, 2 crayons, a pen, some Sterling silver bracelet/necklace charms, and a cufflink! That stuff tells a story in itself.

Not a bad day and sorta glad I didn't score a Walmart deal. :-)

LEGO adding "play features" to a high-end set, largely geared at adult collectors.

The Bank kind of had a similar thing, with the vents for robbers to climb through and into the bank vault, as well as "laundering" money into bank through the laundromat washers and dryers.

Indeed! I find all sorts of stuff when buying LEGO in bulk like this. I find money all the time. Usually pennies and dimes but this time found a 1 dollar coin. The beat thing I ever found was a diamond ring which was worth hundreds when I sold it at a jewelry store that does appraisals. I had no clue what collection/lot it came from so it was mine. The cufflink I found in today's lot is pretty nice. Wishing I had found the second. Sorting continues...

the 2x4 round under the cabin lets you rotate the engine, it's very satisfying. the roof storage on the rear deck is somewhat of an ugly compromise.

the next big addition is connecting the engine to the tracks. I'll have use a portal axle to not completely loose cargo volume.

I like to use LEGO sets as maps when playing P&P RPGs with friends, or just by myself it's fun to built stories using them.

And I've never use them cuz I only use custom stuff but I think there's some sweet single-player strategy game rules for which LEGO sets and minifigs would be great.

There is also the people that use LEGO for Wargaming.

I remember being very proud when i figured out to do six-wide twoseaters for the first time, only later did i find out it was used earlier in a Harry Potter set. At last count, over 35 minifigs not counting friends stuff.A bunch of rarer colors. Sand green, magenta, pinks, purples, etc. For once there were no Star Wars or Bat Man sets which leads me to believe this collection may have belonged to a girl.

The 48x48 base plate was nice along with the other large plates.

There were however a lot of castle parts and figures and accessories. I was also able to build quite a few of the mini architectural builds like the empire state building pretty easily. So I'd say a good deal overall.

I'm currently negotiating a price with a seller for a lot that includes a bunch of train parts. Nothing fully built from what I can see in the pics but I can see train wheels, windows and pieces of track too. I normally buy in the summer and build in the winter but I'm finding some deals over this past winter too.

On a side note... The cuff links are of quality and I may actually use them at some point. The change I found in the lot is enough to buy me my coffee and donuts in the morning too!

OK, so I'm building a mech for my hammerhead dude as I want to make vehicles for all of my Shark Army minifigs. (even if they're tiny ones such as the pincer-crab one).

I need help though, I'm kind of stuck and think I lost my way with the design, originally I was going to stick a hammerhead on top, like a normal mech. Would it look better to go for a more gurren lagann style mouth is the cockpit thing?

Also criticism/advice welcome on the general build.

I agree with the others. Some kind of open cockpit reminiscent of a mouth with teeth would fit really well. Articulation for the gun arm at the elbow would be nice.
Maybe lengthen the tail a bit as well as adding a second fin to it. A more pronounced dorsal fin too.

Yeah, the pauldrons are a mess, I ran out of ideas and just wanted to get something on there as soon as possible. I was copying an exo-force mech for parts of the core/base design but that had single-moulded pieces for the pauldrons. I suppose bigger ones would look much better with a big mouth torso.

What if I made the pauldrons into the hammerhead hammer-part and eyes? MS-paint because I'm a slow builder and cooking right now so I don't want to prototype and get dirty lego.

That is what I pictured when I first saw it. The body being the mouth with the space above the cockpit being the upper jaw. Not sure how you would work in the lower jaw.

Ok, I think I've gotten the 'skeleton' of the mech down, now it's just a case of adding details and switching things about a bit. Also making everything coloured properly and not a strange reminder of my childhood.

I think I'll move the airtanks/propellors somewhere else, they make the legs way too wide and in any other position while fixed there they hang off the back weirdly. Maybe have them up by the fin as a backpack.

Not 100% happy with the mouth/jaw but I can't see another way to do it currently, and I can't find my 1x2 plates with teeth so I can't really try anything else currently.

I'm pretty happy with the head, it definitely needs more detail/refining on top as it's pretty boring but I prefer the fixed head with overhang instead of mounting the eyestalks to the pauldrons directly (also I couldn't make the pauldrons work well as eyes.)

I agree, the propellers do make the waist look too wide. Moving them up by the shoulders would be best, imo. Agree about the head as well. Looks good, just needs a bit more detail on top. I think the mouth looks fine, maybe just replace the large teeth in the back with smaller ones.

They were testing the waters with those updated pirates a few years ago and they flopped hard. The first ninjago line was equally unimaginative, until they figured out it was a solid money-maker and they could take a few risks with it. I havent done much market research beyond visiting the lego store on weekends, but I can tell you that children, the actual audience for lego, are not fed up with license shit and no-one is clamoring for something else beyond a handful of grumpy adults. Luckily, its a building toy, so you dont have to sit around bitching waiting for them to market your specific desires to you, you can actually build whatever you like.

I didnt talk to anyone, I merely observe happy children picking out their favorite superhero shit. Im really going by sales, though, and while its not hard to find some superhero stuff on clearance at certain times of year, you never find the entire line in the bins the way pirates ended up. I liked pirates, and I bought a couple of the fort sets when they came out, and then I bought the whole line minus the ship at 40% off a few months later in the actual lego store, which is insane disasterous fire sale prices by their standards.

I dont think anyone here is opposed to lego making giant ships. I dont really care what lego puts out because I'm going to mod the fuck out of whatever i buy anyway. I've just been trying to point out to you that lego releases most sets with the hope that they will sell lots of them to children, and they will most likely not keep a line alive based on the desires of a comparatively few adults.

Shame about pirates. Not my favourite theme, despite enjoying the canons and boats as a wee lad. I didn't pick up any because most of them felt so juniorized and sterile to me. I just didn't feel excited looking at them at all. I did love the drunk octopus though.
I really think it was the style they were going for, because that latest ninjago wooden boat looked fucking bomb af. It that thing had less tan and more regular browns and integrated into pirates i think it would've had a bigger chance.

Thats my point. The quality of the 2015 line is bad compared to new builds. The 80s and 90s pirates more sophisticated. That could be why they failed. Not because of the theme itself but because they lacked detail and impressiveness. Watch them build a pirate ship with the love that destiny bounty got or a castle with the detail ninjago city got and then see how they sell.

My moc projects (favourite thing to do with Lego) often require parts of older sets and parts in quantities that would become too pricy through sets. The pab is also often very barren where i live. That and i only recently found out there's a difference between bricks and pieces/pab and the customer service per part buying service.

Arrg, I should have known you were the too good for bricklink guy. The 2015 pirates blow the old shit out of the water, my man, and its not even close. I cant attach a picture of 6270 cause we hit the limit, but its a big stair piece, a big rope bridge piece, and a collection of giant panels. The new one were brickbuilt and nicely designed to work with each other, and they failed anyway.

The front bit is a cargo pod that Han jettisons at the first sign of an imperial inspection, and can't find a replacement for since it's an antique.

If you find the entry of the complete set you're looking for click on it.
Once on the page of the set there are three gray tabs under the image on the top left. One of them is called 'Price guide' and you'll see what they're offered for in a glance.
